Die Erfindung betrifft die Herstellung von Bariumoxyd durch Erhitzen von Bariumsulfid mit in Wasser suspendierter Magnesia, wobei sich neben Bariumoxyd und unlöslichem Magnesiumhydroxyd Schwefelwasserstoff nach. folgender Gleichung bildet: BaS+Vg0+a H20-Ba0+Mg(OH)2+H.S. Es ist bekannt, Bariumsulfid mit Magnesiumsalzen und Wasser zu erhitzen, wobei sich neben Magnesiumhydroxyd und Schwefelwasserstoff ein Bariumsalz bildet; indessen war es nicht bekannt, daß die gleiche Reaktion auch mit in Wasser suspendierter Magnesia eintritt, wobei an Stelle des Bariumsalzes Bariumoxyd bzw. Bariumhydroxyd entsteht. Die Gewinnung von Bariumoxyd auf dem bisher üblichen Wege ist mit ziemlich großen Schwierigkeiten und Kosten verbunden, weil die Ausbeute bei den jetzt gebräuchlichen Verfahren verhältnismäßig gering ist. Das vorliegende Verfahren gibt eine nahezu theoretische Ausbeute, wobei noch das gleichzeitige Entstehen von Schwefelwasserstoff und die Verarbeitung des Gases zu Schwefelsäure ganz erhebliche Vorteile bieten.Process for the production of barium oxide.
