Description
Process for improving the burnability of smoking tobacco. To that To give smoking tobacco the required burnability is partly an impregnation of the Leaves with certain salts and the like: 'partly a certain soil fertilization of the tobacco plantation has been applied without, however, a consistent, good result, even with the same Type of tobacco. In addition, the taste of the tobacco was enhanced by the impregnation adversely affected.
According to the invention, a uniform, good burnability is achieved without special impregnation or soil fertilization for each tobacco achieved in that the tobacco leaves be inoculated with cultures of bacteria that were found during the Form the fermentation process wax.
Such cultures of growth-forming bacteria were obtained, for example, by exposing slightly moistened tobacco according to patent 395748 to the action of an alternating electrical current of approximately uniform current strength, which is no more than z Amp. Per square decimeter. The moisture content of the small tobacco bale used (about two pounds) was so great that the bale reached a temperature of 40 'within half an hour at an initial voltage of the current of about 500 volts. This temperature was maintained for about 48 hours by an automatic current regulator (contact thermometer). After this time, a wax-like, shiny layer had formed on the tobacco leaves, which could be removed mechanically. This wax-like mass represents the desired culture of a previously undescribed rod-shaped bacterium, which differs strikingly from the known ones in that the extraordinarily abundant spores are colored strongly after a short time with cold dyes, while it is known that all known spores of bacteria are around them to be able to dye, must be subjected to a special treatment (staining, high temperature, etc.). This curability is so striking that it cannot be overlooked; it is a reliable means of distinguishing the growth-forming bacteria from others previously used for tobacco fermentation.
It remains to be seen whether it is the wax-like wetness it is a question of excretion of the bacteria, or whether it is a transformation of plants Substances through the vital activity of the bacteria takes place, or whether the body substance the bacteria itself is a wax-like mass. Incidentally, it can be assumed that the wax-like mass, like the majority of the bacteria themselves, is also inside of the leaves is in place.
The procedure is not related to the specified type of vaccine collection limited, - since it can be assumed that other known bacterial wax formers, that occur on dry plants are suitable for the method.
The use of said bacteria-containing layer for fermentation happens appropriately in the way; that you get an aqueous suspension of the vaccine in Mist form on the pickled or unheated leaves during their layering and then let it ferment. Since the burnability of depends on the mass of bacteria formed during fermentation and a long fermentation counteracts the development of bacteria, a fermentation process is expedient chosen, in which the fermentation is as lively and short as possible. Particularly suitable For this purpose, a method in which the tobacco leaves in loose, low stacks about 1 /, 'm high in layers or hung in loose arrangements, so that the air in the fermentation room is kept artificially humid and warmed can penetrate into the interior of the masses. This fermentation with about q0 ° C air heat and around 80 percent humidity only takes a few days.
The vaccination with growing bacteria can also be used afterwards Tobacco that has already been fermented using a different process, and also for tobacco substitutes be applied.
