Description

Method of representation. of a potassium selenosulphate-potassium thiosulphate mixed salt. Resolutions of selenosulfonic acid salts are used for toning photographic silver images used. So far, the potassium salt of solid salts of selenosulfonic acid has been known (B. Rathke, Journ. For practical chemistry 1865 p. I), the rubidium salt and cesium salt and finally the mixed salt sodium selenosulphate-sodium thiosulphate from B. Rathke.

For practical use, the first three salts have the disadvantage that they are not resistant to atmospheric influences; they draw water easily from the air and, once they become damp, they are carbonated by the Air decomposes. The mixed salt sodium selenosulfate-sodium thiosulfate is free from this disadvantage, but it can only be obtained with a small amount of selenium; 3 to q. Percent of usable selenium content is the maximum limit.

Now, on the basis of his analyzes (Journ. Für Prakt. Chemie 1865 p. 21 Z. ii) it was considered probable that the mixed salt Potassium selenosulfate-potassium thiosulfate exists. His analysis probably had it made that on one molecule of its potassium selenosulfate there were: 1 / 2F molecule Potassium thiosulphate, and accordingly he had his preparation contaminated Potassium selenosulfate addressed. This preparation shows the disadvantage mentioned above, that it dissolves in the air by the attraction of water and subsequent splitting the carbonic acid of the air soon decomposes.

We have now found that if larger amounts of potassium thiosulphate are present in addition to potassium selenosulphate, at least '/' one molecule of potassium thiosulphate and one molecule of potassium selenosulphate can produce a mixed salt that stays in the air much better than the potassium selenosulphate from B. Rathke, which is contaminated by potassium thiosulphate, and therefore offers great advantages over the above-mentioned three selenosulfonic acid salts in practical use. Since this salt can easily be obtained even with a much higher content of selenium (one can achieve between 12 and 13 percent selenium content), it surpasses all previously known solid salts of selenosulfonic acid in terms of practical usability. Example. 82 g of potassium sulfite are dissolved in water and refluxed for a few hours with 18 g of selenium and 7 g of sulfur, which. Substances go into solution except for small traces. The solution is evaporated until a sample crystallizes in the cold when rubbed. On cooling, a potassium selenosulphate / potassium thiosulphate mixed salt containing 12 percent selenium crystallizes in white crystals from this solution.

These crystals are soluble in water with the excretion of selenium; They also release selenium when rubbed with anhydrous selenium. In saturated sodium sulfite solution or in 20 percent potassium sulfite solution, on the other hand, they dissolve easily and without any decomposition.
