Description

Process for the production of barium chloride from barite. The invention relates to a process for the production of barium chloride from barite (Ba SO.J with the essential characteristic that silica and sulfur chloride (S .. CI.) Are brought to act on the barite at high temperature. Another possibility for acceleration and perfection In particular, the new process is designed in such a way, for example, that 100 parts of heavy spar are mixed with 26 parts of silica and heated up to 100 ° C. During this process, sulfur chloride vapor is fed in for about an hour. The reaction proceeds roughly according to the following formula: I. Ba S04 + Si02 = BaSi03 + SO2 + O2BaSi03 + 2SIC12 = 2 Ba C12 + 2 S 'OZ + S02 + 3S- The reaction product is dissolved with hot water and the solution is filtered and This means that 90 percent of the theoretically possible amount of barium chloride is obtained.

In the second embodiment of the method the mixture of barytes and silica is supplied to still a proportion of 1 5 parts of carbon. The otherwise identical treatment then results in the reaction according to the following formula: II. Ba S04 + Si02 + C = BaSi03 + SOZ + CO2BaSi03 + 2SpC12 = 2 Ba Cl2 + 2Si02 + SOZ + 3S. In this way, up to 99 percent of the theoretically possible amount of barium chloride can be obtained.

The silica serves as a catalyst in both cases and can again be used. Catalyst Amount of solid or gaseous recovered in the reaction and bound sulfur can be used for other purposes.
