Abstract
Description
The invention relates to cleaning compositions and it particularly relates to compositions used in sanitary installations, for example toilet bowls.
One of the main problems posed by such compositions is that they must remove scale deposited on the surface of the toilet bowl. It is known to use for this purpose aqueous compositions containing at least one acid, for example hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, sulphuric acid, acetic acid or fumaric acid.
However, the compositions containing hydrochloric acid are corrosive and dangerous and it is therefore preferable to use weak acids.
It is also known to improve the adhesion of the cleaning compositions to the sloping walls of the toilet bowls by adding a thickener. Usually, anionic and/or non-ionic surfactants or other thickeners such as polyethoxylated amines or cellulose derivatives such as carboxymethylcellulose are added.
In general, these thickeners require additives to be used, such as alcohols to dissolve the carboxymethylcellulose in water.
In the case of thickened acidic compositions, such as those used in sanitary facilities, the pH range must be chosen so that the introduction and stability of fragrances (perfumes) into the composition are not difficult. At pH values below 1.5, decomposition of the components of most fragrances occurs.
The viscosity of such compositions must also be chosen to ensure that they have sufficient scale-removing power and a remanence of the fragrances desired by the consumer. Insufficient viscosity does not allow the cleaning composition to adhere sufficiently to the walls, thereby reducing the contact time of the composition with the scale. On the other hand, excessive viscosity prevents the fragrance from diffusing into the air surrounding the toilets or into the water in the lower part of the toilet bowl.
An object of the invention is therefore to provide a thickened acidic aqueous composition which does not contain a strong acid but has sufficient scale removal capacity.
A second aim of the invention is to provide such a descaling composition which has a viscosity that can be regulated to allow good adhesion to the inclined walls and at the same time diffusion of the fragrance into the ambient atmosphere.
A third object of the invention is to provide a perfumed, thickened acidic aqueous composition which is simultaneously colored, clear and transparent and stable at ambient temperatures up to 40ºC for several months.
Another object of the invention is to provide a scaling composition for cleaning sanitary facilities which contains a single thickening surfactant to reduce the manufacturing costs.
Es sind bereits Verdickungssysteme bekannt, die bestehen aus einem Amido-Betain der Formel Thickening systems are already known that consist of an amido-betaine of the formula
worin bedeuten:where:
R einen Alkyl- oder Alkenylrest mit 9 bis 17 Kohlenstoffatomen,R is an alkyl or alkenyl radical having 9 to 17 carbon atoms,

y die Zahl 0 oder eine ganze Zahl von 1 bis 3,y is the number 0 or an integer from 1 to 3,
und einem Salz, ausgewählt aus den Alkalimetall- oder Erdalkalimetallsulfaten.and a salt selected from the alkali metal or alkaline earth metal sulfates.
Such thickening systems are described in EP-A-0 077 674 (UNILEVER). This document mentions that betaines that do not contain an amido group cannot thicken aqueous compositions. It also mentions that amido-betaines cannot be thickened with a salt that is sodium chloride or sodium bromide. It also refers to a LONZA publication according to which a cocoamido-betaine containing sodium chloride can be thickened by adding a anionic surfactant.
These compositions can be in the form of gels if a thickening agent such as a surfactant, for example an ethoxylated nonylphenol, or a polymer such as a cellulose derivative is added to them.
The applicant has now surprisingly and contrary to the information in the above-mentioned publications found that a betaine which does not contain an amido group can be thickened by alkali metal or alkaline earth metal halides or sulfates in the presence of weak acids.
The betaines chosen by the Applicant to thicken aqueous compositions containing at least one weak acid in the presence of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal halides or sulfates are selected from the betaines having the following general formula:
oder or
worin bedeutenwhich mean
Surprisingly, the betaines of formulas (III) and (IV) not only thicken weakly acidic aqueous compositions in the presence of an alkali or alkaline earth metal halide, but they also allow the dispersion of fragrances (perfumes) which can be introduced at the end of the mixing without separation into two phases. The fact that a fragrance can be added at the end of the formulation represents a great advantage for the industry. They can produce a mixture which does not contain any fragrance and, at the final stage, a fragrance can be introduced into the same mixture which may vary according to the tastes and habits of the consumer.
The betaines selected by the applicant also allow the production of transparent and clear compositions which are stable over time from ambient temperature up to +40ºC.
The invention therefore relates to a thickened acidic aqueous composition for cleaning sanitary facilities, which is characterized in that it contains at least one betaine selected from the betaines of formula (III) or (IV), at least one weak acid, at least one salt, optionally a fragrance (a perfume), optionally a bactericide, optionally a colorant (dye) and water.
The weight ratio of salt to betaine is preferably below about 1.5:1. The composition contains 0.5 to 10 wt.% of at least one betaine of formula (III) or (IV) and 0.1 to 15 wt.% of at least one salt.
Preferably, it contains 2 to 8 wt.% of at least one betaine of formula (III) or (IV), 0.5 to 6 wt.% of at least one weak acid and 0.2 to 10 wt.% of a salt.
As regards betaine, particularly preferred are for formula (III) those in which x = y = 2, and for formula (IV) those in which x = y =
Die schwache Säure wird vorzugsweise ausgewählt aus der Gruppe Ameisensäure, Essigsäure, Citronensäure, Milchsäure, Bernsteinsäure, Gluconsäure, Glutarsäure, Adipinsäure, Apfelsäure und ihren Mischungen. The weak acid is preferably selected from the group consisting of formic acid, acetic acid, citric acid, lactic acid, succinic acid, gluconic acid, glutaric acid, adipic acid, malic acid and their mixtures.
The salt can be selected from alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chlorides, bromides, iodides and sulfates. The composition is remarkable for the fact that it allows the mixing of all the components and the addition of a fragrance (perfume) at the final stage.

A composition with a viscosity of 150 mPa·s is obtained, measured in an Epprecht viscometer with a drive (mobile) 2 at a speed of 200 rpm.
Man mischt in der angegebenen Reihenfolge:Mix in the following order:
- 9 g des Betains AM-TEG- 9 g of betaine AM-TEG
- 1,33 g Phosphorsäure (75 %-ig)- 1.33 g phosphoric acid (75%)
- 2,5 g Ameisensäure (80 %-ig)- 2.5 g formic acid (80%)
- 0,53 g Bakterizid (50 %-ig)- 0.53 g bactericide (50%)
- 0,20 ml Färbemittel bzw. Farbstoff (1 %-ig)- 0.20 ml dye or colorant (1%)
- 0,25 ml Duftstoff (Parfüm)- 0.25 ml fragrance (perfume)
- ausreichende Menge Wasser zum Auffüllen auf 100 g- sufficient amount of water to fill up to 100 g
This composition is not viscous (viscosity less than 50 mPa·s). This example therefore shows that the betaine AMTEG mixed with weak acids does not allow the production of a viscous composition.
Zu der Zusammensetzung des Vergleichsbeispiels 2 gibt man 3 g NaCl.To the composition of Comparative Example 2, add 3 g of NaCl.
A composition with a viscosity of 160 mPa·s is obtained, measured with an Epprecht viscometer, drive (mobile) 2, speed 200 rpm.
This composition is clear and transparent and storage stable.
Repeat Example 1, replacing the formic acid with acetic acid and adding 3 g of NaCl.
A composition with a viscosity of 180 mPa·s is obtained which is clear, transparent and stable.
Man stellt die folgende Mischung her:Prepare the following mixture:
- 9 g des Betains TEGO N 192 der Firma GOLDSCHMIDT, mit praktisch der gleichen Zusammensetzung wie das Betain AM-TEG- 9 g of the betaine TEGO N 192 from GOLDSCHMIDT, with practically the same composition as the betaine AM-TEG
- 1,33 g Phosphorsäure (75 %-ig)- 1.33 g phosphoric acid (75%)
- 2,5 g Ameisensäure (80 %-ig)- 2.5 g formic acid (80%)
- 0,20 ml Färbemittel bzw. Farbstoff (1 %-ig)- 0.20 ml dye or colorant (1%)
- 0,25 ml Duftstoff (Parfüm)- 0.25 ml fragrance (perfume)
- 0,53 g Bakterizid (50 %-ig)- 0.53 g bactericide (50%)
- 3 g NaCl- 3 g NaCl
- ausreichende Menge Wasser zum Auffüllen auf 100 g- sufficient amount of water to fill up to 100 g
A composition with a viscosity of 150 mPa·s is obtained, containing 2% formic acid and 1% phosphoric acid.
The influence of the weight ratio between betaine (III) and salt is investigated.
Prepare the same mixtures as in Example 3, but vary the betaine and salt content.
Man erhält die folgenden Ergebnisse: %AM-TEG (enthaltend etwa 5% NaCl und 35% Betain) zugegebenes NaCl in% Gesamt-NaCl in % Salz/Betain Viskosität oder AussehenThe following results are obtained: %AM-TEG (containing approximately 5% NaCl and 35% betaine) added NaCl in% total NaCl in% salt/betaine viscosity or appearance
It can be seen from this that the amount of salt added must not be too high; in any case, it has been found that the salt/betaine ratio should be less than 2:1 and preferably 1:1. In addition, in order to obtain a viscosity of the order of 180 mPa·s in the presence of a fragrance (perfume), the amount of betaine must be more than 3% by weight, preferably 3.6% by weight, and the amount of NaCl must be substantially the same, expressed in % by weight.
Man stellt die gleiche Mischung wie in Beispiel 3 her, wobei man diesmal jedoch als Säure ein Gemisch einführt aus:Prepare the same mixture as in Example 3, but this time introduce a mixture of the following as the acid:
- 1/3 Glutarsäure- 1/3 glutaric acid
- 1/3 Adipinsäure- 1/3 adipic acid
- 1/3 Bernsteinsäure- 1/3 succinic acid
bezogen von der Firma BASF unter dem Handelsnamen SOKALAN DCS.purchased from BASF under the trade name SOKALAN DCS.
Man erhält eine Viskosität von 200 mPa·s.A viscosity of 200 mPa·s is obtained.
Man stellt die folgende Mischung her:Prepare the following mixture:
- 0,5 % Citronensäure- 0.5% citric acid
- 0,5 % Phosphorsäure- 0.5% phosphoric acid
- 2 % Ameisensäure- 2% formic acid
- 3,6 % Betain des Produkts AM-TEG (100 %-ig)- 3.6% betaine of the product AM-TEG (100%)
- 0,002 % Färbemittel (Farbstoff)- 0.002% colorant (dye)
- 0,265 % Bakterizid- 0.265% Bactericidal
- 3 % NaCl- 3% NaCl
- Wasser in ausreichender Menge zum Auffüllen auf 100 %.- Sufficient water to fill to 100%.
A composition with a viscosity of 520 mPa·s is obtained. After adding 0.25% fragrance (perfume), depending on the type of fragrance (perfume), a viscosity of between 100 and 400 mPa·s is obtained.
Prepare the same mixture as in Example 3, but this time modify the order of introduction, i.e. introduce the fragrance (perfume) at the end of the formulation.
Man erhält eine stabile Zusammensetzung, deren Trübungspunkt oberhalb +80ºC liegt.A stable composition is obtained with a cloud point above +80ºC.
