Process for the preparation of aromatic carboxylic acids and aldehydes.
From ider patent specification 32705, class 23, it is known, hydrocarbons that
originate from the dry distillation of coal, including aromatic compounds,
by oxygen under pressure in the presence of solid caustic alkali in the form of dry
To oxidize powder. In contrast, the present invention uses with the intention
To make the process safe, the presence of aqueous solutions or suspensions
of bases or acid-binding salts or mixtures of such. Applying more watery
Solutions or suspensions also have other advantages; it enables an intimate
Emulsification of the substance to be oxidized and, as a result, rapid absorption of the
formed acids and thereby protects those in contact with the reaction mixture
parts of the pressure equipment before the attack. It also enables a
much more complete utilization of the applied substance to be oxidized and also
the alkaline compounds used to absorb the acids, as such an intimate one
Mixing as in the presence of water between the alkaline substances and
the organic compounds is otherwise not possible.
Ausführungsbeispiel., With the pressure oxidation of montan wax and paraffin, which in
In a manner similar to that of the present invention, the present method
therefore nothing to be done, because the ones just mentioned are not among the aromatic compounds
belong. On the other hand, however, it was by no means possible to foresee that pressure oxidation would occur
.of aromatic compounds could perform in the same way as the
Resistance of the individual classes of compounds to oxidation is right
different. It has been shown in the present case that in particular
the aromatic hydrocarbons require a considerably higher temperature
is than with the aliphatic. Embodiment.
In analoger Weise läßt
sich aus Toluol Benzoesäure herstellen. In an autoclave made of steel, 50 g of p-xylene are mixed with
¢ oo ccm 2 "1z n soda solution at a temperature of 25o ° and one by pressing in
total air pressure of 60 atm. with constant mixing of the contents of the autoclave
subjected to the action of the compressed air. The reaction product exists
from a solution of p-toluic acid sodium and terephthalic acid sodium in addition to in
Aldehydes dissolved in excess xylene. The reaction is over in a few hours.
During the tests, one of the parts of the autoclave is kept compressed
Air flow in and at the other end through a pressurized reflux condenser
the air, more or less deprived of its oxygen content, flows away. The yield
of p-toluic acid is 40 percent of the xylene consumed. The yield of aldehydes
is about ro percent of the xylene consumed. Since-the aldehydes probably
are the precursor of the acids, the same procedure applies to their production
as for that
Carboxylic acids, it should only be useful, continuously-that
To remove xylene from the apparatus, to separate the aldehydes from it and the -ylene
= to be brought back into the apparatus. Also shorter or shorter reaction times
Temperature could be favorable for the formation of the aldehydes. In an analogous way
produce benzoic acid from toluene.
oxydierbaren aromatischen Verbindungen oxydieren.
Instead of the soda solution, milk of lime, for example, can also be used
find or-also other solutions or suspensions which have the property
to bind the resulting acids. --- -Instead of the compressed one mentioned in the example
Air can of course also contain compressed oxygen or other molecular oxygen
containing gases are used, but one will probably mostly expediently the
Cheap and the lower fire hazard because of only the compressed ones
Operate air. That also applies to the vessel wall, which may have a catalytic effect
special catalysts and oxygen carriers can be used
mentioned for the sake of completeness. Small amounts of
Soaps or soap-producing substances or additives with a similar effect are added,
which the emulsification of aromatic compounds with .den aqueous solutions
or suspensions and thereby a more uniform transfer of oxygen
or a more rapid absorption of the acids formed by the alkaline aqueous
Effect solution or suspension. Also solvents that are involved in the oxidation process
do not participate, may come for the purpose of milder exposure to oxygen
due to their thinning effect in question, especially when through
Oxidation produces solid or sparingly soluble substances, which contribute to the oxidation
could encase certain material; on the other hand, such solvents can also be used
Make difficult-to-attack substances or oxidation more accessible, in particular
solid substances, which are dissolved by the solvent and in this way more finely distributed
will. Occasionally it also proves to be useful for pressure oxidation
certain aromatic compounds more or less large amounts of other compounds
to add, which can be more easily oxidized and then, as auto-oxidizers, the difficult ones
oxidize oxidizable aromatic compounds. Finally, it should be mentioned
that there are also cases where two aromatic ones which are individually difficult to oxidize
Compounds are more easily oxidized together.
