Abstract

The quality of water for drinking or for use in the household or factories, taken from a normal supply network, is improved by addn. of CO2 to form H2CO3 in varying amts., to give at least 2 different CO2 concns. in the water. The CO2 is added to the water from the network before the water passes to the point of use. Pref. CO2 may be added to form a max. concn. of H2CO3, followed by mixing this impregnated water at the point of use with non-impregnated water, to give the required concn. For watering plants, concn. of CO2 and H2CO3 is max.; for household use, the concn. is lower. Impregnation with CO2 or mixing of tap water with impregnated water may take place directly at the point of use. Water taken from the network is brouqht, by impregnation or mixing, to 2 different CO2 concns., at the point of use, dependinq on at least 2 different temps. of withdrawal or use. Pref., the physical and/or chemical properties of water taken from the network are measured, and addn. of CO2 or the mixing ratio of impregnated and non-impregnated water are controlled accordingly. The control may be such that (i) the uptake of positive ions by living organisms, e.g. man and/or plants, is favoured over the uptake of negative ions, or (ii) the dissolving power of the water for positive ions, e.g. mineral or trace elements, is increased.
