Abstract
1. A method of regulating the lubricant flow, which is thermostatically controlled in dependence on the lubricant temperature of an internal combustion engine, through a heat exchanger (5) and through a by-pass duct (6) which by-passes the heat exchanger (5), wherein the means for carrying out the method include a thermostat (1), a valve cage (4), an outer casing (11) and an oil pan, wherein the thermostat (1), one end of which bears via a tappet (3) on the casing (1), at least protrudes into the - hollow - cage (4) and moves it, when the temperature of the lubricant continues to rise, against the bias of a spring (2) acting on the cage (4) past a porthole to the by-pass duct (6) in such way that : a) when the lubricant is warmed up and as long as its temperature is entirely within the range between cold and hot, the lubricant is fed in quantities controlled in dependence on its temperature into both the by-pass duct (6) and the heat exchanger (5), b) when the lubricant is hot, the lubricant flows into the heat exchanger (5) and its flow into the by-pass duct (6) is simultaneously blocked, characterized in that, c) when the lubricant is cold, the lubricant's flow into the by-pass duct (6) is blocked and the lubricant is fed through the heat exchanger (5).
