Abstract

1,179,703. Valves. A. AZIZ. 12 June, 1967 [10 June, 1966], No. 25946/66. Heading F2V. A valve, adapted for insertion in a vehicle engine lubricating system fitted with an oil cooling and/or heating device for the purpose of ensuring that the oil supplied to the engine is at a temperature which satisfies the optimum requirements of the engine, comprises a body 12, moulded from aluminium, zinc, cast-iron or synthetic plastics, having therein a cavity 5 into which four ducts 1, 2, 3 and 4 open and within which a closure member 6 is movable, the closure member having a sealing ring 7 and being secured to a wax or fluid-filled thermostatic element 8. If ducts 1 and 2 are connected to the inlet and outlet respectively of an oil cooling device, and ducts 3 and 4 to an oil pump and engine gallery respectively, then in the event of an undesirable increase in the oil temperature, the closure member moves to the right, against the force of the spring 11, so disconnecting the direct passage of oil from the pump to the engine and forcing it to flow through the cooling device prior to entering the engine. Alternatively, the valve may be constructed such that ducts 1 and 2 are staggered with respect to ducts 3 and 4, in which case, ducts 1 and 4 may be connected with the outward lines of separate heating and cooling circuits the return lines of which are joined externally of the valve before connection to the engine, the duct 2 being blanked off in such an arrangement.
