Vakuummeter nach lnc. Leod. Die Erfindung betrifft eine Vervollkommnung
des Kompressionsvakuummeters nach M c. L e o d, welches allgemein zur Messung hoher
Vakua verwendet wird. Die Wirkungsweise des Apparates nach M c. L e o d wird als
bekannt vorausgesetzt.
Vacuum meter according to lnc. Leod. The invention relates to improvement

are lifted up and the mercury dome is visible in the raised barometer tube
be. For this reason, the pipe parts in which the mercury dome moves are
usually made of glass. It settles on the wall of the barometer tube
however, at the height of the y-y line, a precipitate of mercury oxide over time
and metallic mercury in finely divided form, so that the level of the mercury dome
is no longer visible. This is due to the fact that the mercury in the barometer tube
is always under the vacuum of the recipient and with a higher vacuum the settling
the precipitation is favored. In the capillary, the actual measuring tube,
this is less the case because the mercury here is mostly below a higher absolute value
The pressure is as in the barometer tube, so that experience has shown that there is no disturbing precipitation
is to be stated.
The vacuum gauge according to M c. L e o d is thus both in the rest position,
as well as in the measuring position influenced by the external air pressure, so that every reading
again requires careful adjustment of the mercury tip. This requires
the manufacture of the barometer tube from glass, which is due to its fragility
easily gives rise to disturbances. In order to clean this tube from the ones mentioned
Precipitation a special construction is also required, which for the
Operational safety of the apparatus is not beneficial.
All of these drawbacks are made possible by the perfected shape of the vacuum gauge
avoided according to the present invention. The main feature of this perfected
Form consists in the fact that the barometric tube at its upper end is at the level of the
Capillary tip has an enlargement, the cross section of which is very large in proportion
to the cross-section of the mercury supply in contact with the atmosphere. Through this
Arrangement is effected in that the correct adjustment of the mercury dome
required setting of the mercury storage vessel practically independent of
the height of the measuring point above the sea and independent of the fluctuations of the atmospheric
The air pressure in this place always remains the same.
In the drawing is an embodiment of such a vacuum gauge

special test tube for filling the apparatus with mercury.
In eine Abzweigung i
Messungen ausführen will.
The device (Fig. R) consists of a barometer tube
n, which at its upper end with an extension o and a connecting piece
s is provided for the connection to the vacuum to be measured. In a junction i
the barometer tube has a mercury stuffing box c with the reading scale
Capillary i, with the ball inserted in. The mercury surface in contact with the atmosphere
of the barometer tube consists of an annular surface which is formed in that
the lower end of the barometer tube into two telescoped parts
is split. The outer tube, which can be adjusted in height, has an extension

Anschlag a erfolgen kann.
If the apparatus is brought to the rest position according to Fig. I by connection at s under high vacuum, the barometric mercury column is set, for example 730 mm high. By lifting the mercury vessel r from the rest position into the measuring position according to Fig. - by the height h, which is given by the stop a, the mercury rises up to the mark it at the height yy from the tube ii into the enlargement o with a large cross-section f2 and empties out of the vessel r, so that the lower surface of the mercury goes back to the annular surface f, between the inner and outer part of the barometer tube. The size ratio of the two cross-sectional areas f, and f, is chosen so that changes in the height setting of the mercury level in the vessel o, as they can occur as a result of fluctuations in the barometer level and the temperature or due to small losses of mercury, remain so small that they can be neglected. In this way, all fluctuations in the length of the mercury column are relocated to the measurement position after the lower mercury level f 1, where they have no effect on the measurement. The height of the vessel r for the measuring position is therefore the same in all cases, so that it can no longer be adjusted according to the upper mercury level, as in the previously used form of the apparatus, but according to the stop a fixed once and for all. The upper mercury level can thus also be made invisible and the barometer tube n together with the upper expansion vessel o and the junction i can be made of metal.
entsprechend vorgezeichneten 1larke it genau einzustellen, indem das Gefäß
For the correct setting of the upper mercury level and the corresponding measurement of the amount of mercury in the apparatus, a special test tube t (Fig. 3) is used, which is temporarily attached to the junction i of the barometer tube u in place of the capillary k with spherical vessel in by means of the mercury seal c . When the apparatus is both connected to a high vacuum, this test tube enables the level of mercury in the vessel o to be precisely adjusted to a mark corresponding to the capillary tip by lifting the vessel r to the stop a (Fig.: 2) and on it So much mercury is added or removed from the vessel r until the mercury tip in the tube t is at the mark it (in the line yy). The test tube t has the same content as the capillary h with the ball m up to the mark u, but is considerably longer than the capillary in order to practically rule out the influence of the air compression taking place in its upper end on the mercury level. In this way, the device can also be checked at any time.
