Mac Leod vacuum meter. With the vacuum gauges according to Mac Leod
is known to be an amount of gas that has a certain volume at the pressure to be measured
occupies, brought to a smaller volume by compressing with mercury,
which can be read on a capillary by means of a corresponding scale division,
and it becomes the difference in height between the mercury level in this capillary
and in a reference tube connected to the vacuum gauge to be measured
measured. For precise measurements it has also already been suggested on the comparison tube
branch off a capillary of the same diameter as the measuring capillary in order to
to compensate for the capillary effects of the mercury. To the vacuum meter for technical
Purposes, in particular for example in large rectifier systems, it is now
but desirable, a more resistant material than the usual glass
to use. So one went over to it, the riser pipe and the connecting pipe
of the vacuum gauge made of iron. In this case, the latter can of course
can no longer be used as a reference tube. On the other hand, it creates difficulties
on such an iron pipe, for example, a glass capillary for the required determination
branch off the difference in altitude. To get around these difficulties, one has
tried to shape the tube appropriately for this level of mercury
always to be set independently of the fluctuations in atmospheric pressure. on
however, an accurate measurement cannot be obtained in this way.
According to the invention, in the event that the vacuum gauge is in
consists essentially of opaque material, a comparison capillary is used
that are attached to the device at one end, but at the other end
closed is. An error then naturally arises from the fact that above the
Mercury in the comparison capillary is not the pressure to be measured, but a
higher pressure exists. But the pressure increase as a result of singing is practical
Volume of the capillary relatively so small that this error for the measurement
can be completely disregarded. Where he should be observed out of special considerations
must, it can easily be precisely determined and taken into account.
In the drawing, some possible designs for such a vacuum meter are shown. In all three figures, a is the riser pipe, b is the connecting pipe and c is an extension insert inserted between the two. These parts a, b. c are all made of an opaque material such as iron. The measuring ball d with the measuring capillary e and the comparison capillary f, which in turn are designed as glass parts, are attached to the extension neck c in an airtight manner. According to Fig. X, these glass parts are completely separated from one another, so that the measuring ball d with the measuring capillary e on the one hand and the comparison capillary f on the other hand sits on its own at the extension c. The glass parts can, however, expediently be combined and then attached together to the extension approach c. Embodiments of this type are shown in Figures 2 and 3, between which there are only differences with regard to the form of assembly of the glass parts.
