Description
Process for oxidizing iron surfaces. The invention relates on the oxidation of surfaces made of iron and the like, i.e. H. those made of iron and steel, and relates to an improved method for this purpose.
According to the invention there is the new method for the oxidation of iron surfaces in that the object whose surface is to be oxidized is transformed into an alkaline one Bath is immersed, which contains an oxide of a metal, such as. B. lead, behaves electronegatively towards iron, so that an oxidation of the iron or Steel surface without the application of an electric current with the deposition of the metal of the oxide is achieved. The concentration of the alkali is preferably chosen so that that the solution boils at about ig-0 to 13o °, and preferably also the method carried out at a significantly elevated temperature. Sometimes it is beneficial the bath alkali cyanides or oxidizing agents, e.g. B. nitrates to add, for example 10 to 20 g potassium cyanide. The surface to be treated must be in a suitable manner cleaned and polished so that it comes into intimate contact with the bath. The method is particularly applicable to well-machined and smooth parts.
In a practical embodiment of the invention, a bath is produced, by placing 22 g of black lead in a caustic soda solution boiling at about 120 ° Stirring dissolves. The object whose surface is to be oxidized is inserted into the Immersed solution, which is kept at a temperature of 120 to 130 ° C. the The optimum temperature at which the object must be removed depends to a certain extent on the composition of its surface. For example, the heating be continued until the boiling point of the bath rises to 135 to 1q.0 °. After a shorter or longer time, depending on the circumstances of the individual case, e.g. B. the dimensions of the immersed object and the special nature its surface, the latter is tanned and at the same time with a crystalline non-adherent precipitate covered by metallic lead. When this rainfall does not multiply further, the highest degree of oxidation has been reached. The progression The process can be observed by looking at the object from time to time takes the bath and gently rubs its surface in a vessel with water to expose the oxidized metal by removing the coating of finely divided lead. When the treatment is finished, the oxidized surface is black in color on, which is an extraordinary one with perfectly polished surfaces depth and strength achieved and remains unchanged.
The reduced lead is collected from the bottom of the bath and from the wax jar recovered and can be converted back into oxide and used again.
The concentration of lead in the bath can change within certain limits. For example, 2o to 30 g of black lead can be used per liter, but for some purposes a considerably lower concentration is found, e.g. B. 5 to 10 g per liter, as appropriate.
The vessels. in which the procedure is carried out can be made of porcelain or made of iron with a copper or lead lining.
