Abstract
Maleic anhydride (MA) is produced by catalytic air oxidn. of suitable hydrocarbons (e.g. butene, butane, butadiene and/or benzene) at 300-450 deg.C, followed by (a) opt. separating part of the MA by cooling to a temp. above the dew point of the accompanying H2O, (b) extracting with a water-insoluble tert. amine (I), and (c) heating the extract at 120-180 deg.C under vacuum to recover the MA. Step (b) is effected by (i) introducing the air stream contg. MA and H2O vapour at a temp. below the dew point of the H2O, opt. after adding more H2O, into a mixt. of (I) and a hydrocarbon water-azeotroping agent, and sepg. the organic phase, or (ii) introducing the air stream at a temp. above the dew point of the H2O into a mixt. of (I) and an alcohol with a low vapour pressure, and sepg. the organic phase, or (iii) introducing the air stream into H2O, extracting the maleic acid with a mixt. of (I) and a hydrocarbon water-azeotroping agent, and sepg. the organic phase. (I) must have a pKa of less than 9. In cases (i) and (ii), it must be an air-stable amine with prim. aliphatic gps. branched at the 2 posn. (I) is tri(2-ethylhexyl)amine (Ia). The azeotroping agent is an aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. xylene or diethylbenzene. Pref. alcohols are (iso)decanol, lauryl, myristyl or palmityl alcohol or diethylene glycol monobutyl ether.
