Description
The invention relates to a vehicle occupant restraint system, with a safety belt having at least one shoulder belt section and a lap belt section, several fittings with which the safety belt is fastened to the vehicle, a gas bag connected to the safety belt and a gas generator.
Such a vehicle occupant restraint system is known from DE 4 116 162 A1 and DE-OS 2 255 182. These known restraint systems feature so-called inflatable safety belts, in which the restraint surface provided by the belt is increased in the event of a restraint. These inflatable belts also partially reduce the so-called belt slack. The two known restraint systems have the disadvantage that the gas bag moves along with the belt and thus the inflated gas bag is only optimally positioned for average-sized vehicle occupants. For example, if the gas bag is to extend up to the occupant's head when unfolded, it would only extend up to the shoulder area for an extremely tall occupant who pulls off a lot of the belt. In addition, the known inflatable belts are extremely expensive to manufacture.

The invention creates a vehicle occupant restraint system in which the gas bag connected to the belt section is always optimally positioned, regardless of the length of the belt strap that is pulled off. This is achieved in a vehicle occupant restraint system of the type mentioned at the beginning by the gas bag being assigned a fitting part and the gas bag being locked to the vehicle in the area of the fitting part on the one hand and being attached to it so that it can move relative to the seat belt on the other. The invention takes a completely different approach to that described in the two publications mentioned above, in that it largely decouples the gas bag from the belt strap. The gas bag is attached at one end directly to a part that does not move when the belt strap is pulled off, i.e. is attached to the vehicle. It is therefore always in the optimal position, regardless of the size of the occupant. When the belt strap is pulled off, the belt moves along the gas bag, i.e. relative to it. The belt serves only as a second fastening point for the gas bag, which is firmly connected to the vehicle at one end, and actually only serves to optimally position the gas bag. This applies in particular if the seat belt has a shoulder belt section that runs along the occupant's shoulder to an upper fitting and the gas bag is connected to the shoulder belt section. In this case, the gas bag extends to the side of the head when inflated and protects the head laterally from the adjacent side of the vehicle, where the side window and B-pillar pose potential injuries in the event of restraint. In this case, the gas bag is a side head gas bag. This gas bag, which is always optimally positioned, has an extremely small volume in comparison to previously known side head gas bags, which extend along the entire side window area, since they have to cover all possible seating positions of the occupant to the side of the head.
Das Beschlagleil dient vorzugsweise unmittelbar der BefestigungThe fitting is preferably used directly for fastening
In diesem Fall ist das Beschlagteil ein Umlenkbeschlag.of the gas bag, which is either locked to the fitting itself or which is locked by the fastening of the fitting to the vehicle, preferably to the B-pillar. In this case, the fitting is a deflection fitting.

befestigt.
5According to another embodiment, the gas bag is attached to the lap belt section so that it can move relative to it. In this case, the gas bag is preferably attached to the end fitting or to the tongue deflection fitting.

Fitting part 11 in the form of a deflection fitting. From there, the belt extends downwards along the B-pillar 13 to a belt retractor (not shown). An elongated, folded gas bag 15 is attached at the ends of its long sides on the one hand via the deflection fitting to the B-pillar 13 and on the other hand to the shoulder belt section 7 of the belt. For attachment to the shoulder belt section 7, a loop is sewn onto the gas bag or the gas bag is slit at this point so that the belt can extend through the loop or the slit. At this point, a sliding movement between the belt and the gas bag 15 is possible.
When the vehicle occupant has fastened his or her seat belt, the folded gas bag 15 extends from the area near the fitting part 11 to over the shoulder of the occupant, i.e. past the side of the occupant’s head.
In the event of a side impact, a gas generator 17 integrated in the B-pillar 13, which is directly connected to the gas bag 15, i.e. without a gas line, inflates the latter. The gas bag 15 is designed in such a way that it covers the entire side area between the head and the side of the vehicle, i.e. the B-pillar and the side windows. The head-side gas bag is always positioned close to the head and thus offers an excellent restraining effect. The position of the gas bag 15 in the folded state shown in Fig. 1 is not exactly reproduced, because the gas bag is shown pulled slightly upwards in order to make the deflection fitting 11 visible. In fact, the gas bag 15 should extend along the shoulder belt section 7 and cover the fitting part 11 even when folded.
The embodiment of the restraint system shown on the left seat in Fig. 1 differs from the one on the right in that the deflection fitting is not attached to the B-pillar, but to the vehicle seat. The deflection fitting is also designated 11. 19 designates a first belt retractor and 21 a second belt retractor, both of which are integrated or attached in or to the seat. In this embodiment, the gas bag 15 is longer than the gas bag 15 shown on the right side in Fig. 1. The gas bag 15 has two sections, namely a head section 25, which is shown in the unfolded state and extends laterally from the occupant's head, just as was already explained using the right gas bag.

-5 --5 -
The gas bag 15 is also fixed to the vehicle by means of the fitting part 11, i.e. in this case attached to the seat. An elongated, tube-like section 27 of the gas bag 15 extends from the section 25 forming a head-side gas bag close to the tongue fitting 29. The tube-like section 27 is located between the belt and the occupant. The previously explained loop, which is attached to the gas bag 15 and through which the shoulder belt section 7 extends, is designated 31. In this embodiment, the gas bag 15 is inflated from top to bottom via the gas generator 17 located in the seat. The head section 25 is inflated first and protects the occupant. Section 27 is then inflated, which partially eliminates the belt slack. Section 27 also reduces the surface pressure between the occupant and the belt in the event of a restraint.
In contrast to the right-hand embodiment, the deflection fitting is not height-adjustable in the left-hand embodiment. In the right-hand embodiment, the deflection fitting is preferably height-adjustable together with the gas generator 17 so that no gas line has to be interposed between the gas bag 15 and the gas generator 17.
The lower end of the gas bag 15 is shown in Fig. 2. In contrast to the previously explained embodiments, the hose-like gas bag 15, which is folded into a band, surrounds the shoulder belt section 7, as can be seen in the sectional drawings in Figs. 3 and 4. The side folds 31 of the gas bag 15 are attached to one another by a weak adhesive or welded connection so that the unfolded state is maintained during normal driving. When the gas bag 15 is unfolded, however, the adhesive or welded connections come loose. At the end of the gas bag 15, on the inside, where the shoulder belt section 7 and the gas bag 15 should be as tight as possible and slide over one another, a friction-reducing coating 41 is provided so that the belt can be easily rolled up and removed.
Damit die Köpfe der Heckinsassen nicht zusammenstoßen können, kann beispielswei-Fig. 5 shows that all occupants can be equipped with a restraint system according to the invention. To prevent the heads of the rear occupants from colliding, for example,
For the middle, not shown, fifth vehicle occupant, a so-called harness belt can be provided, in which the shoulder belt sections are each equipped with a head side gas bag, which can extend between the head of the middle occupant and the heads of the side rear occupants.

Reference numbers are used where the parts correspond to each other.
In contrast to the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the vehicle occupant restraint system has a gas bag 15' which extends between the lap belt section 5 and the occupant's pelvis. The gas bag 15' is slidably attached to the lap belt section 5. Its right-hand end according to the drawing is however attached to the end fitting 101, which is screwed to the vehicle. The gas bag 15' is either clamped between the end fitting 101 and the vehicle, for example, or attached directly to the end fitting 101, which can also be designed as a belt retractor. The gas generator 17 housed on the vehicle in the area of the door pillar is connected to the inside of the gas bag via a line 103. The seat belt shown is shown rolled up on the left seat.
