Harzlösung zur Herstellung einer trockenen Grundierung auf einer feuchten OberflächeResin solution for producing a dry primer on a wet surface
The invention relates to a resin or polymer solution which is suitable for producing a dry primer on a wet surface.
It is well known that at outdoor work sites, for example on building sites, it is often necessary to apply a material to a variety of surfaces, for example for bonding or sealing. In many cases, this work can only be carried out if the surface is dry. In unfavourable weather conditions such as dew, fog, high humidity or rain, it is difficult or even impossible to dry the surface to be worked on sufficiently. This then results in delays in the planned work process, which can result in corresponding costs.
The task therefore arose to develop a process with which a damp surface could be pre- treated in such a way that a dry surface suitable for further processing could be created quickly and easily.
Auch das Abwischen mit niedrig siedendenThis goal cannot be achieved by simply wiping away the moisture. Water can remain in small depressions and new dew can easily form. Even wiping with low-boiling

Solvents, regardless of whether they are miscible or immiscible with water, often do not result in a surface that is completely free of water. When using solvents that are miscible with water, the water is absorbed well by the solvent and can therefore mostly be wiped off. However, immediately after wiping, the remaining thin film of solvent evaporates, which leads to the surface cooling down and then to the precipitation of a new thin layer of condensate water.
The result is similar when using solvents that are only slightly or not miscible with water. Surprisingly, a temporary displacement of the water by the solvent can be observed, but here too a new condensate film is soon formed due to the evaporative cooling. In addition, with inclined surfaces, water easily flows over the dried surface from above the treated area, so that a permanent dry surface cannot be created. Other methods for creating dry surfaces, as well as heating with hot air, are generally not suitable because of the time required.
There are already various products available that are designed to enable bonding to damp surfaces:
There are already various sealants that adhere well even to damp surfaces, but require a long time to dry or harden/dry completely. During this time, the applied material does not represent a substrate that is suitable for further bonding because it initially lacks mechanical resilience. This is because the initially pasty, liquid sealant simply gives way until the force exerted by the bonding becomes so low that the flow limit of the sealant is no longer exceeded.

Self-adhesive products in the form of a thin film are already available on the market, which is applied to a suitable carrier material and is typically rolled up. When the film is pressed onto the damp surface and the carrier material is removed, a sufficiently resilient, dry surface should be available. However, tests show that when using such films, in most cases the damp surface must first be wiped off thoroughly with a cloth and even then sufficient contact between the film and the surface itself is not always achieved. Therefore, the results are difficult to reproduce and in more than half of the cases lead to unsatisfactory results even with low mechanical stress. The same applies to products in which the film is applied to a material that is intended to serve as a base for further bonding after the side coated with the film has been pressed onto the damp surface.
Die Bestimmung der Oberflächenspannung der erfindungsgemäßen Harz- oder Polymerlösungen erfolgt gemäß DIN 53 914 "Prüfung vonIt has now been found that the problems mentioned can be solved in a surprisingly simple manner by a resin or polymer solution which has a lower surface tension than water and than the surface to be treated and a viscosity of less than 3,000 mPa s and which forms a dry film on a moist surface in less than 5 minutes at a temperature of around 20 0 C. Since the surface tension of water at 20 0 C is known to be 72.58 mN/m and the surface tension of a roof tile, for example, is 35 mN/m, all resin or polymer solutions which have a lower surface tension than 35 mN/m are suitable for producing a dry roof tile surface according to the invention, provided they correspond to the viscosity values and drying behavior mentioned above. The same considerations apply to all other surfaces to be treated. The surface tension of the resin or polymer solutions according to the invention is determined in accordance with DIN 53 914 "Testing of

The surface tension of the surface to be treated was determined in accordance with DIN 53 3 64 "Testing of plastic films, wettability of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) films". To do this, the test liquids listed in the standard were first prepared with the addition of the dye "Victoria Blue" and their surface tensions were checked in accordance with DIN 53 914. Then, to determine the surface tension of a roof tile, for example, the solutions were applied with brushes to the roof tile surface that had previously been cleaned with deionized water and dried and the wetting behavior was visually assessed. By comparing them with test solutions with a known surface tension, the test solution was then determined whose film remained spread out on the roof tile for at least 2 seconds, while the test solution with the next lowest surface tension no longer spreads out. This resulted in the following for the Roof tiles a surface tension of 35 mN/m (dyn/cm).
Resin or polymer solutions with a viscosity of less than 3,000 mPa · s have the property of infiltrating and displacing the water film on the surface when applied, for example using a brush, at sufficient speed. The use of a resin or polymer solution that contains a resin or polymer that is not soluble in water is preferred, whereby the solvent should be practically immiscible with water. Alkyd, epoxy, melamine, phenol, urethane resins, synthetic or natural rubber as well as homopolymeric and copolymeric polyacrylates have proven to be suitable resins and polymers.
Wird eine derartige Harz- oder Polymerlösung auf eine glatte Metall-, Stein- oder Kunststoffoberfläche aufgetragen, dann entsteht nach dem schnellen Verdunsten des Lösungsmittels ein fester trockener Film auf der zu behandelnden Oberfläche, derIf such a resin or polymer solution is applied to a smooth metal, stone or plastic surface, then after the rapid evaporation of the solvent, a solid dry film is formed on the surface to be treated, which

It is also advantageous that during evaporation a layer of solvent vapors forms over the film surface, which displaces the moist air and thus prevents the formation of a moist condensate film on the freshly formed, dry surface. After just a few minutes, work can then continue on the freshly formed dry primer on the surface that was moist before treatment. The resin or polymer solution according to the invention is applied to the surface using a brush or another suitable application device, for example. The moisture film is infiltrated and displaced by the resin or polymer solution and is partly carried away when the solvent evaporates.
The principle underlying the present invention of subverting and suppressing a water film on a solid, non-porous and non-absorbent surface by means of a solution of a resin or a polymer in a solvent that is largely immiscible with water can be used in many different ways. For example, this process made it possible to apply a polyacrylate dissolved in volatile hydrocarbons to damp roof tiles, which made it possible to create a dry primer in just a few minutes, to which a sealing film to be bonded with butyl rubber could adhere cleanly and permanently. The decisive factor for the suitability of the resin or polymer solution according to the invention is above all that it has a lower surface tension than water and than the surface to be treated, and a viscosity of less than 3,000 mPa s. The type of resin or polymer used for this purpose, on the other hand, is of secondary importance.

Of course, the resin or polymer solution according to the invention can also be used to quickly remove a film of moisture from other smooth surfaces, so that they are ready for further treatment. For example, other building elements made of stone, such as chimneys, around whose outer wall a sealing ring is to be placed, can first be dried out at the points to be treated by creating a primer according to the invention, which is a prerequisite for further treatment. The drying of a metal body, e.g. a ship's hull, before applying a coat of paint can also be carried out successfully by pretreating it with the resin or polymer solution according to the invention.
It should be noted that the effect of displacing the water film on smooth surfaces achieved with the present invention can only be achieved in a permanent manner by the resin or polymer solution according to the invention. If the solvent alone, for example petrol, were used to displace or undermine the water film, which it could be suitable for due to its lower surface tension than water itself, then a very cooled surface would remain, on which a film of moisture would quickly precipitate again. By using the resin or polymer solution according to the invention, there is no sudden evaporation of the solvent and therefore no immediate, strong cooling of the treated surface. This prevents the formation of a precipitate of moisture on the drying film of the resin or polymer solution according to the invention. In addition, the resulting primer on the edge of the treated surface forms a kind of "protective wall" against the penetration of water, which would otherwise easily flow into the area that has just dried, especially on suitable surfaces.

The resin or polymer solution according to the invention can be offered for practical use in a ready-to-use package that allows it to be used immediately at the work or construction site. In the simplest case, the resin or polymer solution is in a can or bottle and is applied to the surface to be treated with a brush. However, it is more advantageous to use a "brush can" where the brush is integrated into the lid of the can on the inside and cannot dry out there because it dips back into the solution when the can is screwed shut. Of course, the resin or polymer solution according to the invention can also be used as a spray.
It is particularly advantageous to offer the resin or polymer solution in a bottle or tube with a cap that can be screwed on separately if necessary and that contains a brush, felt or sponge. When the bottle is turned over, the resin or polymer solution slowly seeps through the brush, felt or sponge, thus enabling a uniform, thin application. It is particularly advantageous to design the cap in such a way that the liquid product can only flow out of the bottle and through the brush, felt or sponge when the brush, felt or sponge is applied to the surface to be treated with sufficient pressure, and when it is removed from the surface, the cap closes again automatically.
If only small surfaces are to be pretreated, a dry primer can also be created using a felt-tip pen with the help of the resin or polymer solution according to the invention. In any case, however, packaging should be used that is easy to handle and offers the possibility of applying an evenly thin film without additional equipment.
