Als Holzwerkstoffe, bei denen an die mechanischen Eigenschaften höhere Anforderungen gestellt werden, verwendet man - je nach dem Verwendungszweck des Produkts - Sperrholzplatten (Furnier- oder Tischlerplatten), Holzspanplatten oder Holzfaserplatten. Für Anwendungen, bei denen hohe Oberflächenhärte, eine glatte, abriebfeste Oberfläche, hohe statische Festigkeit und Ausziehfestigkeit verlangt werden, z.B. bei Arbeitsplatten für Werkbänke, kommen praktisch nur stabverleimte Platten oder Multiplexplatten in Betracht. Aufgrund ihrer Herstellung und des dafür notwendigen hochwertigen Holzes sind sie jedoch teuer. Solche Platten werden hauptsächlich als Bauwerkstoffe verwendet, z.B. mit Graphitteilchen in den Außenschichten (Brandschutzmaterial, US-A 5 443 894) oder im Verbund mit mineralischen Schichten als Wandplatten und dergl. Es sind auch OSB-Platten bekannt, die beiderseits Deckschichten aus feinteiligen Spanplatten aufweisen, wobei in den Deckschichten die Späne so verteilt sind, daß die kleinsten Teilchen an der äußeren Oberfläche liegen (US-A 4 364 984). Damit soll eine möglichst glatte Oberfläche erzielt werden, die sich gut zum Laminieren oder Dekorieren eignet. Schließlich sind auch mehrschichtige OSB-Platten bekannt, in deren Mittelschicht die Späne mit verschäumbarem Harz gebunden sind (US-A 5 554 429). Damit will man möglichst leichte Produkte erhalten. Die Deckschichten können mit einer dünnen Furnierschicht abgedeckt sein, die jedoch ausschließlich dekorative Funktion hat (Fig.2; Sp.3, Z. 49-62; Sp. 11, Z. 23-30).
