Der Skilanglauf hat in den letzten Jahren einen starken Aufschwung erlebt. Während der Freizeitlangläufer vorwiegend auf sogenannte No-Wax-Ski zurückgreift, verwendet der ambitionierte Rennläufer und vorallem auch die Spitzensportler Skier, die abgestimmt auf die Schneeverhältnisse entsprechend präpariert (gewachst) werden müssen. Hierzu bietet der Markt zum einen Wachse zum Präparieren der Gleitflächen und zum anderen solche zum Präparieren der Haftzone an. Die Haftwachse teilen sich wiederum in sogenannte Trockenwachse und Küster auf. Während "die Trockenwachse von überwiegend fester Konsistenz sind, handelt es sich bei den Küstern um eine zähe Masse. Bislang sind diese Küster nur in einfachen Tuben erhältlich, aus denen das Wachs vorallem bei niedrigen Temperaturen, welche an der Loipe vorherrschen, schwer herauszudrücken ist.Cross-country skiing has experienced a strong upswing in recent years.
