This invention relates to a process for the preparation of alkylene glycols such as e.g. B. ethylene glycol and propylene glycol by hydrolysis of the corresponding alkylene oxides such. B. ethylene oxide and propylene oxide. In particular, this invention encompasses the catalytic hydrolysis of such alkylene oxides in the presence of CO n via a glycol ester intermediate to the corresponding alkylene glycol. The hydrolysis is preferably carried out in the presence of an organic solvent.
It is known in the prior art that alkylene oxides can be hydrolyzed to the corresponding alkylene glycols. For example, in German patent specification 2 141 470 the Reaction of ethylene oxide in aqueous streams in the presence of carboxylic acid salts and at COg pressure of more than 30 to 50 atmospheres has been described at temperatures in the range from 160 ° to 200 ° C, and one obtains a selectivity to monoethylene glycol in one Amount from about 74 to 90 weight percent. It is pointed out it has been found that high COp pressure favors the production of a high quality monoethylene glycol product, this Pressure in the range of about 30 to 50 atmospheres at temperatures in the range of 150-300 ° C.
In German Patent 2,359,497, the hydrolysis of ethylene oxide to monoethylene glycol and the concentration of CO 2 in the aqueous stream have been described. The reaction took place under a CO 2 pressure of more than 28 atmospheres and with dilute solutions of ethylene oxide.
No. 3,629,343 describes the hydrolysis of ethylene oxide in the presence of carbon dioxide to produce ethylene glycol. It is assumed that the Hydrolysis of ethylene oxide in the presence of water and carbon dioxide in some cases temporarily forms an ethylene carbonate intermediate which hydrolyzes to ethylene glycol will. According to this patent, basic compounds such as carbonates, bicarbonates or alkali hydroxides are added used to "reduce the formation of dialkylene glycols and to accelerate the reaction "(see column 2, lines 26-30 of U.S. Patent 3,629,343). In practical use
809881/0786809881/0786
In den Beispielen dieser Patentschrift betrug die maximale Ausbeute an Monoalkylenglykol 95,5 % (bezogen auf die ursprüngliche Alkyl enox id konzentration).according to this method, such basic compounds are used in combination with halogen salts of tetralkylammonium compounds. The examples in this patent indicate such basic compounds which include sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide. In the examples of this patent, the maximum yield of monoalkylene glycol was 95.5 % (based on the original alkylene oxide concentration).
Bei der Beschreibung des kontinuierlichen Verfahrens, das dieThe subject matter of this patent has been carefully reviewed by the Stanford Research Institute in the report entitled "Ethylene Glycols, Glycol Ethers and Ethanol Amines", Process Economic Program, Report No. 70 (1970). In this Report No. 70, attention has also been paid to the statements of British Patent 338 026, which correspond to that of US Patent 3,629,343. The author of this report points out the assumed reactions which take place according to the procedure of the aforementioned British patent, namely the reaction of ethylene oxide with carbon dioxide to form ethylene carbonate and the hydrolysis of the ethylene carbonate to form monoethylene glycol. According to this patent, these reactions take place simultaneously. In a continuous process using multiple reactors, however, a carbonation catalyst and carbon dioxide are used in the first reactor, while hydrolysis is carried out using different bases in the second reactor, which is used in series with the first. Report No. 70 attempts to describe a continuous process using the values of the aforementioned British patent. In presenting a continuous process, the report states that in the 2 examples which illustrate a continuous process, the feed ratio of water to oxide is 1.04 to 1 and 1.06 to. In the second reactor, which contains base, water and carbon dioxide, the temperature is 200 ° C. at a pressure of the entire system of 25-30 atij. The author of the report believes that many of the crucial components must be lined with the expensive Monel * ' material ("clad construction"). In describing the continuous process that the

Bei der Erläuterung des Katalysatorwiedereinsatzes wird folgendes festgestelIt:Authors have shown in the report that 90 % of the catalyst can be reused, which is believed to be important from an economic point of view. In the explanation of the reuse of the catalytic converter, the following is stated:
The catalyst reuse system based on the Crystallization from the cooled, heavy end fractions with reuse of a thickened catalyst mash is quite questionable and requires values about solubility ratios and other factors that are not available are."
The method as described in U.S. Patents 3,629,343 and further described in the Standord Research Institute report is a continuous process that pressure ratios of more than 25 atm. Furthermore, halogen salts of tetralkylammonium compounds are used in the process mentioned used in conjunction with the basic catalyst so that halide is present in an aqueous system. That Halide causes corrosion problems and therefore requires the use of reactors made of expensive special materials, to prevent this corrosion. Drawing 5.1 of the report schematically illustrates the device and the process model for the production of "ethylene glycols with the aid of Carbonization Process ". The presence of halides, as shown at the bottom of the column in Figure 5.1, would be higher Concentrations of heavy residues. Also, as stated in the report, there would be catalyst reuse very difficult.

In Report I it was described that in the hydrolysis of ethylene oxide in aqueous solutions of carboxylic acid salts, ethylene glycol is formed in quantitative yield. Polyglycols are only formed with parallel alkaline and non-catalytic hydrolysis. In Report I it was concluded that that because of the pronounced effect of alkaline hydrolysis (as it occurs in reaction (II) p. 775) when using Carbonate and oxalate ions (also acetate and formations) as Catalysts the best yield of monoglycol (monoethylene glycol) is achieved when bicarbonate ions are used as catalysts.
Der Bericht II lautet auf S. 512:In report II the selectivity of ft-oxide hydrolysis is with Carbonates have been described as a catalyst. In particular, ethylene oxide becomes ethylene glycol, both with and without a catalyst and with and without COg pressure from 0 to 10 atmospheres, hydrolyzed. Report II reads on p. 512:
At high concentrations of bicarbonate and glycidol, the constant alkali concentration reaches values at which the alkaline hydrolysis takes place rapidly and leads to an increased yield of polyglycerols. Hydrolysis under COp pressure promotes the reverse conversion of alkali to bicarbonate and increases the glycerol -Yield, the calculated values of the latter corresponding to the experimental values under these conditions. (Drawing 3, Table 3). Propylene and ethylene glycol carbonates can be hydrolyzed much more quickly. For this reason, the constant alkali is also at high concentrations of the reactants -Concentration low and CO 2 has no effect on the distribution of the products of these reactions. "
According to this, no organic solvent was used in either Report I or Report II.

Die Reaktion erfolgt vorzugsweise.in einem organischen Lösungmittel .The inventive method relates to the production of alkylene glycols such. B. ethylene and propylene glycol by hydrolysis of the corresponding ethylene oxides such. B. ethylene or propylene oxide, in the presence of CO 2 at a temperature between about 85 ° and 400 ° C and a pressure of less than about 24.5 atü and in the presence of selected Katlaysatoren. The reaction is preferably carried out in an organic solvent.
It has been found that the method according to the invention in relation is very selective on the formation of monoethylene glycol. Furthermore, the process according to the invention does not require the use of compounds containing halide ions; the halide ions would require the use of specialized equipment, to prevent the corrosion caused by them. The method according to the invention has no problems relating to catalyst reuse and can be used in conventional metal devices like made of stainless steel. In addition, the method according to the invention takes place under temperature and Pressure conditions as they are customary in technical processes, d. H. the method according to the invention can work with devices which are available in conventional technical systems. This is important because little or no Investments in new devices will be required. It was also found that the initial concentration the alkylene oxide has no effect on the product distribution, so that concentrated alkylene oxide solutions according to the invention Procedures can be dealt with. Furthermore, the method according to the invention can be used to treat the main exhaust gas flows are used as they arise in processes in which ethylene oxide is carbonized and then converted to monoethylene glycol is hydrolyzed. This has been described in U.S. Patent 4,117,250.
B. das Waschwasser bei der Äthylenoxid-Herstellung, wobei mit demAnother advantage of the method according to the invention is that hydrolysis can be used to utilize wastewater from industrial reaction processes, such as e.g. B. that Wash water in the ethylene oxide production, with the

In the practice of the invention, an alkylene oxide is reacted with CO 2 and certain catalysts to form an intermediate cyclic or acyclic carbonate in situ. This intermediate product is hydrolyzed with only a small excess of water to form the alkylene glycol, with CO 2 being formed back. CO 2 can act as a selective catalyst in the course of the reaction (it effects a kinetically preferred course of the reaction via a carbonate intermediate which is hydrolyzed to the desired end product). The CO 2 can also eliminate free hydroxide ions in solution, which cause the loss of selectivity to monoethylene glycol. The process according to the invention is preferably carried out in the presence of an organic solvent. The organic solvent helps to keep the hydroxide ions and CO 2 in the liquid phase under control, which makes the use of active catalysts such. B. potassium carbonate and a lower C0 2 pressure and lower procedural ( ; eratures are possible, while a greater yield of monoethylene glycol is achieved.
The catalysts to be used according to the invention are basic Compounds which are useful to provide a glycol ester intermediate and include alkali and alkaline earth salts, i. Guam'dine compounds which can be used according to the invention as catalyst can for example be prepared by adding ammonia and Esters of orthocarbonates such as an alkyl orthocarbonate, in particular Ethyl orthocarbonate, implemented. The organic solvent used in the present invention has the following characteristics: high COg absorption capacity, high ethylene oxide absorption capacity, inert behavior towards ethylene oxide, intimate miscibility with the Reaction medium, and it should be easily separable from the product. Any liquid at the reaction temperature is miscible with the alkylene oxide and the glycol product can - as long as it remains miscible in the system - as a solvent act provided that they are neither with the respondent Alkylene oxide, the glycol product is reactive with the catalyst used. Such solvents include ketones, Esters or ethers such as acetone, alkylene carbonate and dioxane.
