Abstract

The emergency brake for a car consists of four servo operated arms which press brake pads onto the road. The pads are operated inside the wheel track for stability and complement the normal brakes. The brake pads are designed so as not to damage the road and are suited for gripping on snow and ice. The pads are mounted on a mechanical drive and are operated by either a main hydraulic servo (45) or by separate servos. A second servo cylinder (71) can be used to pull the pads off the road.
