Description
The invention relates to a method of manufacture of pure malononitrile in high yields from acetonitrile and cyanogen chloride.
The reaction of acetonitrile with cyanogen chloride to form malononitrile in the gas phase is known from US Pat. No. 2,553,406. However, this process only gives malononitrile in a yield of not more than 18%, based on the cyanogen halide consumed. This reaction is carried out at a temperature of at least 600 n C, preferably at 650 to 700 0 C and with an excellent yield at 675 ° C. It is stated that the yield of the final product is reduced at higher temperatures. According to US Pat. No. 2,606,917, these disadvantages are to be solved by carrying out the reaction in the presence of an inert gas such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen or steam. However, even this measure does not improve the yield. With a molar ratio of cyanogen chloride to acetonitrile to carbon dioxide = 1: 3: 7.2, a reaction temperature of 650 ° C. and a contact time of 6 seconds, the yield of malononitrile according to Example 7 of this patent is likewise only 16.5%.
An improvement in the yields is made according to the published Japanese patent application 16 506/1966 achieved by adding to the gaseous reaction components (acetonitrile and cyanogen chloride) a small amount of chlorine is introduced as a catalyst. This improves the yield, and this is around 70%. However, using chlorine as a catalyst creates large ones Amounts of fumaric acid dinitrile and maleic acid dinitrile as by-products. A separation of the same from Malononitrile is difficult to carry out. Furthermore, the use of chlorine requires one large expenditure on equipment.
In the known processes, the reactants flow through the reactors in a laminar flow. Tubular vessels such as quartz tubes, metal tubes and the like can be used as reactors will.
The present invention is now intended to remedy these disadvantages and good yields of the desired product without the use of chlorine.
0,01 Sekunden angewendet.According to the invention it has now been found that yields can reach over 80% of theory with high throughputs if / is carried out the reaction of acetonitrile and cyanogen chloride at temperatures of 780-1200 0 C and the reactants passes at such a high rate through the reactor that they flow through the reactor in the area between laminar and turbulent flow or in the area of turbulent flow
The residence times can be kept lower when the temperature is increased; above 850 ° C. it is expediently less than 5 seconds. At about 900 to 1100 ° C., residence times of 4 to 0.01 seconds are used.
Höhere Molverhältnisse, wie 1:10, bringen keine weiteren Vorteile.ίο In order to get the highest possible yields preferably molar ratios of cyanogen chloride to acetonitrile of 1 to over 4 are used. As special Molar ratios in the range from 1: 6 to 1: 9 have proven favorable. Higher molar ratios like 1:10, have no further advantages.
The resulting after the reaction products are immediately preferably up to 30 0 C, cooled to temperatures of 20 to 50 ° C, 25th
In order to avoid destruction of the resulting malonic acid dinitrile, it is useful from the liquid reaction mixture the unreacted acetonitrile and the dissolved hydrogen chloride continuously, for example by peeling off in a vacuum to remove.
So z. B. ergeben sich für eine durchschnittliche Ausbeute von etwa 70% folgende Werte:on the dependence of the yields on the molar ratio, The following can generally be said of the temperature and mean residence time will. The higher the temperature, the shorter the dwell times that have to be used. The MoI ratio also plays in. So z. B. for an average yield of about 70% the following values:
Compared to the known method there is the advantage that, according to the type of flow, with which the reactants flow through the reactor, very substantially increased throughputs and thereby increased Yields can be achieved.
It was extremely surprising to note that it is possible to work at temperatures ranging from about 78o C to 0 up to 1200 ° C.
In contrast to the expected decomposition that occurs when working after the process of the invention does not occur, it is now even possible to practice the process of the Invention to increase yields.
