Abstract
' Malonic acid dinitrile is produced by reacting acetonitrile and cyanogen chloride in the gas phase at from 780 to 1200 C., the reactants being passed through a reactor at such a rate that they flow in the range between laminar flow and turbulent flow or in the range of turbulent flow, to give a reaction product comprising malonic acid dinitrile contaminated by maleic acid dinitrile and fumaric acid dinitrile, immediately cooling the reaction product to a temperature of from 20 to 50 C., and removing the maleic acid dinitrile and fumaric acid dinitrile, either by reacting them with a compound having at least two conjugated double bonds to give corresponding Diels-Alder adducts which are separated, or by selective hydrogenation with a calculated quantity of hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst to give succinic acid dinitrile which is separated by fractionation.
