Bei dem Vulkanisiren von Holz mittels hohen Luftdruckes und hoher Hitze zeigt es sich, dafs, wenn die in dem Vulkanisirgefäfs in trockener Luft behandelten Hölzer nach Ablassen des Druckes ohne Weiteres an die freie Luft -gebracht werden, leicht Risse in dem Holze auftreten. Diese Erscheinung erklärt sich daraus, dafs das äufserst trockene Holz sehr hygroskopisch ist und demgemäfs bei der Berührung mit Luft schnell und daher leicht ungleichmäfsig, z. B. zunächst an den der Luft leicht zugänglichen Theilen und porösen Stellen, Wasser aufnimmt. Dieses Reifsen und Springen des Holzes läfst sich vermeiden, wenn man das Holz, während dasselbe unter vermindertem Drucke, zweckmäfsig von 2 bis 3 Atm., in dem Vulkanisirgefäfs abgekühlt wird, mit Dampf behandelt. Das Holz nimmt dann wieder in mehr oder weniger hohem Mafse Wasser auf. Nach der Behandlung mit Dampf und Abkühlung kann nunmehr nach gänzlichem Ablassen des Druckes das Vulkanisirgefäfs geöffnet und das Holz entfernt werden, ohne dafs ein Reifsen oder Springen zu befürchten wäre.
