Description
Process for waterproofing tanned leather Leather is known up to a certain degree capable of absorbing water, which for certain purposes, for shoes or clothing, among other things, can be very annoying. It was therefore missing not in suggestions to make leather waterproof or water-repellent.
B. Kunststoffen illusorisch macht.Already the well-known treatment of leather with fats and / or Waxing does this to some extent. In more recent times one went permanent impregnation, e.g. B. with solutions, suspensions or emulsions of various natural or synthetic materials, over. Among other things, the Aluminum salts and soaps for waterproofing textiles that have been tried and tested for waterproofing textiles taken into consideration. As far as this has proven itself in the impregnation of textiles and in this area largely developed technology, but in general on leather impregnation applied, followed the treatment with aluminum compounds, if a sufficient one Degree of water resistance should always be achieved to clog the Pores of the natural material leather, whose structure naturally does not match that of fabrics or knitted. With this, the impregnated leather takes away the most undesirable Properties, and even if it does not harden, it becomes impermeable to Air and water vapor, which of course largely limits its possible uses and its advantages over e.g. B. makes plastics illusory.
Also the transfer of the known for making fiber material water repellent Methods in which the fiber material with aluminum soaps and paraffin waxes in anhydrous soaked in organic solvents and heat-treated after drying, on leather has not proven itself because there is hardly any sufficient depth of penetration the impregnation can be achieved.
In contrast, it has now been found that leather can be made water-repellent can, without its permeability to gases and vapors, z. B. air and water vapor, too bad if you have the formation of an aluminum soap inside the leather structure caused while using a suitable solvent for the Components of the soap works.
The inventive method for waterproofing tanned Leather made from aluminum isopropylate and a fatty acid with 12 to 24 carbon atoms formed aluminum soaps is therefore characterized in that the leather in in any order with a solution of aluminum isopropylate and with a solution a fatty acid with 12 to 24 carbon atoms and not the aluminum soap converted proportion of both components washes out, both as a solvent for both components of the soap as well as a means of washing out the unreacted Parts of the components evaporate at room temperature under normal pressure aromatic hydrocarbon used.
The process leads to a product that is similar to the application of pre-formed aluminum soaps impregnated leather with respect to the gas mentioned and vapor permeability is superior without it in terms of water resistance to lag behind. The danger of even a superficial hardening and disturbing Discoloration is also avoided.
When carrying out the process, the air-dry leather is soaked to saturation with a solution of aluminum isopropoxide in the hydrocarbon concerned, e.g. B. benzene, toluene or xylene, the concentration of which is preferably 3 to 10 parts by weight of aluminum isopropylate per 100 parts of solution, which, however, can also be more concentrated or more dilute. The most convenient way to impregnate the leather is at room temperature or with gentle warming, but if possible below 50 ° C. , by soaking the leather in the prepared solution.
After the superfluous solution has been allowed to drain off, the damp leather is placed in a solution of a fatty acid, i. H. an aliphatic, saturated or unsaturated monocarboxylic acid having 12 to 24 carbon atoms. An aromatic hydrocarbon which evaporates at room temperature under normal pressure is also used as the solvent for the fatty acid. It is expedient to use the same solvent as for the aluminum isopropoxide.
The concentration of the acid solution should correspond to that of the isopropylate solution; preferably 3 to 10 parts by weight of fatty acid are also present per 100 parts of solution. The treatment is carried out as above at room or slightly elevated temperature.
The aluminum soap formed in addition to isopropyl alcohol sets mainly on the inside of the leather without completely clogging its pores, and has a water-repellent effect.
Unreacted proportions of the reactants are then removed by thorough washing, again with an evaporating at room temperature under normal pressure hydrocarbon, preferably that used for dissolving the Reaktionsteihiehmer serves as detergents and is carried out at temperatures of up to about 5011 C.
The impregnation can optionally also be carried out in reverse order, i. H. can be carried out first with the fatty acid, then with the isopropoxide, but the last step is always washing out, which of course is followed by drying, ideally at room temperature in air.
It should also be mentioned that the impregnation process according to the invention can be used on practically all types of leather. There are particular advantages with light or white leather, as there is no risk of discoloration. The kind of the previous Tanning doesn't matter. The impregnation is expediently immediate made after the fat treatment, however, at any time possible.
The examples explain the invention in more detail. EXAMPLE 1 Samples of side leather were made waterproof by the method according to the invention. The leather used was honored, retanned with syntan and greased.
Diese Lösung hatte eine Temperatur von ungefähr 271 C. First, a solution of benzene containing 3.0 weight percent aluminum isopropoxide dissolved therein was prepared. This solution was divided into two parts. A sample of the side leather, hereinafter referred to as Sample 1 , was immersed in a portion of the solution. They were left in there for 30 mi. The solution had a temperature of 271 C. Another sample of the side leather, hereinafter referred to as Sample 2, was immersed in the second part of the solution and left in it for 15 minutes. This solution had a temperature of approximately 271 C.
Diese Lösung hatte ebenfalls eine Temperatur von 270 C. After the appropriate time had elapsed, each leather sample was standardized out of the solution. Sample 1 was then immersed in a solution containing 3.0 percent by weight oleic acid in benzene and left in it for about 30 minutes. This solution had a temperature of about 27 ° C. Sample 2 was dissolved in a 3.0 percent by weight solution of Oleic acid immersed in benzene and left for 15 minutes. This solution was also at a temperature of 270 C.
Dann untersuchte man
Example 2 In this example, the treatment of Example 1 was repeated in all details, with the exception that, in this example, calfskin was used instead of side leather. The calfskin used was chrome-dyed, re-dyed with syntan, but not greased before the waterproofing treatment.
10,0 Gewichtsprozent Oleinsäure in Benzol 30 Minuten lang stehenließ. Samples of the calfskin were treated at 27 ° C. by first immersing them in a 3.0 weight percent (sample 1) , 5.0 weight percent (sample 2) or 10.0 weight percent (sample 3) solution of aluminum isopropoxide in benzene for 30 minutes and then left to stand in a solution of 3.0, 5.0 or 10.0 percent by weight of oleic acid in benzene for 30 minutes. The leathers were then washed in benzene for 5 minutes and air dried.
In the same way as Samples 1, 2 and 3 , calfskins (Samples 4, 5 and 6) were treated by immersing them in benzene solutions of aluminum isopropoxide and oleic acid for 15 minutes instead of 30 minutes.
Calfskin (Samples 7, 8 and 9) were treated in the same way as Samples 1, 2 and 3 with the exception that the benzene solutions of aluminum isopropylate and oleic acid were heated to 50 ° C. before the leather was immersed and that the leathers took place Was immersed in each of the solutions for only 10 minutes for 30 minutes.
For comparison purposes, the basic treatments used in Samples 1 to 3 and 7 to 9 were also repeated in every detail except that in this example the leather was dipped in the solution of aluminum isopropoxide and the treated leather was washed in benzene was omitted. In the tables below, the samples which correspond to samples 1, 2, 3, 7, 8 and 9 are denoted by 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15.
Nach der Provisional Method of the American Leather Chemists Assoeiation,
Example 3 In this example samples of tanned side leather were treated.
First, a solution containing 3.0 weight percent aluminum isopropoxide was prepared. It was divided into three parts. A separate sample of the leather was immersed in each of these solutions and left for approximately 30 minutes. The temperature of each solution was approximately 271 C. At the end of the indicated immersion time, each leather sample was removed from its aluminum isopropylate bath. The first sample (1) was formed thereon in a bath containing 3.0 percent by weight oleic acid in benzene, the second sample (2) into a bath of 3J0 percent by weight of stearic acid, and the third sample (3) in a bath having a content of 3 , 0 weight percent lauric acid, each in benzene, immersed and left therein for about 30 minutes. In each case the temperature of the fatty acid solution was 27 ° C. After 30 minutes, each sample was removed from the fatty acid bath and washed free of any unreacted substances by immersing it in benzene for 5 minutes. Each sample was allowed to dry at room temperature after it was taken out.
For comparison purposes, the treatment used to waterproof Samples 1, 2 and 3 was repeated except that in each case the dipping of the leather in the aluminum isopropoxide solution and the washing of the leather in benzene were omitted.
In the tables below, the comparative samples, which correspond to samples 1, 2 and 3 , are referred to as samples 4, 5 and 6 .
A sample of this leather, hereinafter referred to as Sample 1 , was first immersed in a solution of 3.0 percent by weight aluminum isopropoxide in benzene and left therein for 30 minutes. The solution used had a temperature of 27 ° C. After immersion in this solution, a leather sample was taken out and then immersed in a solution of 3.0 % by weight of stearic acid in benzene and left therein for 30 minutes. The stearic acid solution also had a temperature of 271 C. At the end of the specified immersion time, the sample was removed from the stearic acid, immersed in benzene for 5 minutes and air-dried.
The dynamic resistance of the leather treated in this way to water was tested in accordance with test method E 31 of the American Leather Chemists Association Provisional Method, April 1953. For comparison purposes, a sample of non-waterproof sheepskin that had been chrome-tanned and greased was subjected to the same test method. This non-waterproof leather is referred to as sample 2 in the following. For further comparison, chrome-tanned sheepskin which had been made waterproof after fatliquoring and drying using chromium complex compounds was also subjected to a test for its dynamic resistance to water. This sample is referred to as sample 3 in the following. Finally, a sample of chromium-plated sheepskin, which had been made waterproof after fatliquoring and drying using chromium complex compounds and had furthermore been subjected to the treatment according to sample 1 of this example, was tested for its dynamic water absorption. This sample is referred to as Sample 4.
The dynamic water absorption test showed that among all samples tested, sample 1, i.e. H. the leather treated according to the invention, opposed the greatest resistance to the penetration of water. Only after 7500 bending processes did the water start to penetrate sample 1. Sample 4 had the second best quality, with the water penetrating the leather after 6500 bending processes. Sample 3 was found to be third best. The water began to penetrate the leather after 5500 bending processes. In Sample 2, the water penetrated through the leather almost immediately. A determination of the static water absorption according to the American Leather Chemists Association was then carried out with samples 1 and 3. It was found that sample 3, which had been made waterproof using only chromium complex compounds, absorbed 107 % water, whereas sample 1 absorbed only 32% water within the same period of time.
The test results clearly show that the method according to the invention gives the leather a superior water resistance, which in no case does one Darkening or discoloration of the leather.
