Use of a copper alloy for the production of mold and
Die castings The production of chill castings or even die castings
made of copper alloys has so far only been made using very specific copper alloys
possible. First and foremost, zinc-containing copper alloys, namely the
various brasses and special brasses, later zinc-free ones were also used
Alloys, especially aluminum bronzes, are used. Against this, too
Copper alloys still containing tin today, especially the usual copper-tin bronzes
according to DIN, considerable difficulties. This is particularly evident in the inclination of the
Alloys, crack when pouring in permanent molds. The hot formability of the in question
The coming tin bronze is too small to cope with the inevitable shrinkage during the casting process
to meet. Since tin bronze is used very often for bearing bushings and therefore
are required in large series, is the poor workability of these alloys
a great disadvantage to permanent mold castings.
According to the invention, perfect mold and die castings with smooth surfaces are obtained through the use of copper-lead-silicon alloys with more than 5 to 30%. Lead, 0.3 to 5% silicon, the remainder copper. Such copper-lead-silicon alloys are already known and have also been recommended for the production of castings, but these only have up to 4% lead with a silicon content of also 40/0. Since the cast parts to be produced from the specified alloys are to be used in particular for bearings, bearing bushings, etc., they must not have too great a hardness, since hard bearing alloys are known to attack unhardened bearing shafts. From the relationships that exist between the contents of silicon and lead in copper-lead-silicon alloys, according to which higher silicon and lower lead contents lead to harder alloys, whereas lower silicon and higher lead contents lead to softer alloys, silicon contents of recommended 4 or even 5%, only those alloys for the stated purpose, the one - have higher lead content. It was found that a known alloy with 4% silicon and 4.1% lead had a hardness of 83, while an alloy with 41 / o silicon and 5.5% lead had a hardness of only 76.3 according to Brin e1f . When the silicon content was reduced to 2.5% with the same lead content, the hardness even fell to 62.4. The much better castability of copper-lead-silicon alloys compared to tin bronzes can be seen in simple cast samples. While the surface of the tin bronzes is rough and unsightly due to oxidation, the "open" surfaces of the copper-lead-silicon alloys are also smooth and oxide-free. In addition, the alloys proposed for the production of chill castings and die castings according to the invention are mechanically more valuable. Bearing bushings made of copper-lead-silicon alloys cast in a mold can be almost completely knocked together, which corresponds to a bending capacity of up to 180 °, while the same bushings are made of a copper-lead-tin alloy with 80% copper, 10% lead and break 10% tin at a bending angle of about 90 ° and below.
According to the invention, such copper-lead-silicon alloys are also intended
Find use that still contains additives of 0.1 to less than 2% aluminum, iron,
Manganese, nickel or cobalt, as well as antimony and arsenic in an amount of 1.5 to 5
%, Cadmium from 0.1 to 10%, tin within the limits 0.1 to less than 2% and phosphorus
contained in an amount of 0.1 to 0.51 / o. All of these additives can be used individually or
be contained in the alloy in a suitable combination.
The addition of aluminum has proven to be particularly effective,
since it further improves the cast surface. While namely pure copper-lead-silicon alloys
with higher silicon contents, i.e. from about 3% upwards, for the formation of lead silicates
tend to affect the casting surface, especially at high casting temperatures,
this unpleasant property of the
Copper-lead-silicon alloys have already been made to disappear. In the book
"Materials for plain bearings" by Kuehne 1, 2nd edition, 1952, Verlag Springer,
Berlin, p. 301, is on
this unpleasant property of the silicon-containing
Copper-lead alloys have already been mentioned and therefore of silicon additives at all
advised against. It is therefore an essential feature of the invention, according to which the
favorable influence on silicon-containing copper-lead alloys through the addition of aluminum
has been established for the first time.
If the alloy is to be used for the manufacture of parts,
which are less about good bearing metal properties than about mechanical resistance,
As strength and hardness matter, so are alloys containing nickel and
Contain iron. The iron also causes a grain refinement and a
better lead distribution. Manganese also serves the same purpose, although this is the case
larger additions within the specified amount can lead to segregation.
Antimony improves the bearing metal properties even with additions of only 0.2 to 0.5%
improves after the antimony is easily available as a special component in the form of a
Copper-antimony compound is precipitated. The same is true for arsenic and tin. As
was observed, even small amounts of tin cause the formation of the
Copper-tin alloys known from b-mixed crystal with its the bearing metal properties
beneficial effect. Finally, phosphorus and cadmium promote the light liquid
the alloy.
