Wäre der Wasserverschlufs nicht vorhanden, sondern würde Dampf und Flotte unmittelbar in das Färbegut eintreten können, so würde der Dampf in jedem Augenblick ein Zerreifsen der Flotte bewirken, und daher würde beim Fehlen des Wasserverschlusses der Färbevorgang in sehr unruhiger Weise und jedenfalls ungleichmäfsig sich entwickeln. Durch den Wasserverschlufs dagegen wird die Flotte an dem plötzlichen Zurückfallen aus dem Färbegut, in den Sammelraum verhindert. Es steht also die Flotte in dem Färbegut nicht unter der unmittelbaren, sondern nur unter der mittelbaren Einwirkung des Dampfes. Der Wasserverschlufs besitzt Klappen e oder andere Abschlufsorgane, welche ein Entleeren und ein Ablaufen der Flotte aus dem Färbegut ermöglichen und, falls es erforderlich werden sollte, auch ein unmittelbares Kochen des Färbegutes zulassen.The material to be dyed rests on the lower sieve bottom b.
