Dr. HERMANN ÜLSMANN in KÖNIGSHÜTTE (Oberschlesien). Anwendung von Siliciumeisen in galvanischen Batterien. Dr. HERMANN ÜLSMANN in KÖNIGSHÜTTE (Upper Silesia). Application of silicon iron in galvanic batteries.

Patentirt im Deutschen Reiche vom n.Mai 1880 ab.Patented in the German Empire on May 11th, 1880.

This was widely used in earlier times because of its particularly powerful galvanic effects Tine iron chain has been put back into use in most cases of use for two reasons. Once was working with the red, smoking nitric acid of 1.48 spec. Weight in which the Iron must stand up, annoying and uncomfortable, but then the acid became in the course of its effectiveness of the elements. soon diluted, and the iron began developing copious amounts of Nitric oxide gas to dissolve violently, with which the action of the battery came to an end.

These inconveniences can be completely avoided if instead of ordinary iron or Steel, without changing anything else in the construction of the elements, silicon iron (Ferrosilicon) applies. This material is a pig iron with which it is charged due to the usual admixtures, the silicon content of which, however, is up to about 12 pCt. and is increased above it. This silicon iron is even in the finely powdered state is not in the least attacked by nitric acid, whether concentrated or diluted but in the ability of the excitation of electric currents to platinum and Bunsen Coal almost the same. Accordingly, flasks of silicon iron (of the shape the ordinary zinc piston), which in the clay cylinder z. B. in ordinary, pure nitric acid of 1, «spec. By weight, while the amalgamated zinc sheet is on the outside in thinned Sulfuric acid or the like is very easily found in the most powerful galvanic batteries construct. Two 'elements with a 132 sq. Cm effective surface on silicon iron brought, among other things, a platinum wire of 6 cm Length and 0.3 mm thickness along its entire length to full red embers.
