Description
The present invention relates to a process for hydrophobing with silicones. That The process is characterized in that, in addition to hydrophobing silicones, there is also hydrophobing active chromium complex salts are used. In this way, surprisingly, a synergistic one is obtained Effect, d. That is, the hydrophobic effect is far stronger than the additive effect of the silicones and would correspond to the chromium complex salts.
The agents in question can be used to carry out the process according to the invention either in any order - optionally with intermediate drying - or else simultaneously apply.
Suitable hydrophobizing silicones are, for. B. cited in German patent specification 925 225, and suitable hydrophobing chromium complexes are, for. B. U.S. Patent 2 273 040 and in German patent specification 973 270.
The silicones can either be in organic solvents, such as. B. in trichlorethylene, or else can also be used in the form of aqueous emulsions; for the preparation of the aqueous emulsions you can use suitable emulsifiers, such as. B. the trialkylbenzylammonium chloride, use (See U.S. Patent 2,588,365). In those cases where the silicones with the chromium complex salts are to be brought into use at the same time in a bath, one can also proceed in such a way that one the silicones are intimately mixed with the chromium complex salts in an aqueous medium without conventional emulsifiers; The chromium complex salts surprisingly have the property that the silicones in aqueous Convert medium into stable emulsions. It can prove to be useful here, to stabilize the aqueous emulsions obtained, aldehydes of the aliphatic or aromatic type are added Add series or aldehyde releasers, z. B. formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, acetaldehyde, Benzaldehyde, glyoxal, hexamethylenetetramine or formaldehyde sulfoxylate. The inventive method is suitable for making a wide variety of materials water-repellent, in particular for making them water-repellent of textiles, also for the water repellency of paper, cardboard or leather.

A knitted textile material made of polyamide fibers is pulled once through a bath, which in liters 55 g of the emulsion used in Example 2 contains. Then the fabric is spun, at 60 to 90 ° C and then heated to 140 ° C for 3 minutes. The textile material treated in this way has an excellent water repellent effect. By adding zinc acetate in an amount of About 3 g / l treatment bath, the wash resistance of the hydrophobization achieved can be further improved.
A cotton fabric is drawn through a bath which contains 60 g of that listed in Example 1 per liter Contains emulsion and 3 g zinc acetate. Then the fabric is squeezed off, dried at 60 to 90 ° C and heated to 150 ° C for another 5 minutes. The fabric treated in this way is very well hydrophobized.
The surprising increase can be seen from the table below about relevant comparative tests of the water repellent effect can be seen in various textile materials that are produced according to the method of present invention compared to the known hydrophobicity methods can be achieved in which silicones (with the usual addition of a hardening agent such as zinc octoate) or chromium complex salts be used alone in optimal amounts.
To carry out the comparative tests, the textile materials listed were mixed with those specified in each case Solutions soaked, then dried at about 100 ° C and, if mentioned, at higher temperatures heated. In the two-bath treatment, the water repellants were in separate baths applied one after the other; The order in which the water repellants were used did not matter were used and whether intermediate drying was carried out or not. In the single bath treatment the agents were used in the form of an aqueous emulsion, according to the information of Examples 1 and 2 was prepared. The values of water absorption from which each was achieved Hydrophobic effect results were determined on the "Bundesmann" device.
