Abstract

An emergency exit, e.g. for a building, ship, bus and other multi storey structures, has a vertical ladder (22) with an enclosing cage, e.g. to prevent falling. Each floor is provided with a balcony (11) with rail (12a). The ladder cage is fitted with an access panel for each balcony which swing over the rail to form a step ladder access to the escape ladder. The panels are normally locked into the ladder cage, to prevent unauthorized access to the balconies, and are released by a central control, or by automatic means.
