Aus dem Stand der Technik ist ein Verfahren zum Betrieb eines Fahrerassistenzsystems eines Fahrzeuges bekannt, bei welchem in Abhängigkeit einer ermittelten Kollisionsgefahr ein Fahrzeugnutzer gewarnt und zur Vermeidung der Kollision automatisch eine Notbremsung eingeleitet wird. Die Warn- und Eingriffszeitpunkte des Fahrerassistenzsystems können konfiguriert werden. Alternativ dazu wertet das Fahrerassistenzsystem einen Fahrzustand anhand erfasster Signale einer Inertialsensorik des Fahrzeuges und direkten Aktivitäten des Fahrzeugnutzers aus. Als Aktivitäten des Fahrzeugnutzers werden eine Bremsbetätigung, eine Betätigung von Fahrtrichtungsanzeigern, eine Fahrpedalbetätigung und eine Lenkradbewegung ausgewertet. Ziel dieser Auswertung ist, zu ermitteln, ob der Fahrzeugnutzer seine Fahraufgabe aktiv wahrnimmt oder nicht.
