Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Überwachung eines Fahrzeugs, wobei eine Aufzeichnung von mittels wenigstens einer Kamera erfassten Bilddaten aus wenigstens einem Bereich der Fahrzeugumgebung erfolgt, wenn ein relevantes Ereignis ermittelt wird, das auf eine Beschädigung, einen Einbruch oder Diebstahl hinweist. Derartige Sensoreinrichtungen sind typischerweise an besonders relevanten Positionen am Fahrzeug angeordnet, z.B. im Bereich der Stoßfänger und im Bereich der Seitentüren. Die Anordnung derartiger Sensoreinrichtungen führt zu zusätzlichen Kosten und zu einem zusätzlichen Bedarf an begrenzt vorhandenem Einbauraum im Fahrzeug. Weiterhin können vorsätzliche Straftaten, wie Einbruch, Diebstahl und Beschädigungen, unter Umständen ohne eine Auslösung der Aufzeichnung von Bilddaten erfolgen, insbesondere wenn der Täter Kenntnis über die Einbaupositionen der Sensoreinrichtungen am Fahrzeug hat.
