Durch eine elastische und/oder plastische Verformung nehmen die Deformationselemente in einem solchen Fall Aufprallenergie auf, wodurch der Anprall gedämpft und die Gefahr von Kopfverletzungen reduziert werden können. Das Deformationselement ist dabei zwischen einem Innenverkleidungsteil und einer Karosserie eines Kraftfahrzeuges, insbesondere im Bereich einer B-Säule, angeordnet. Durch das erfindungsgemäß vorgesehene Verkleidungselement ist es somit möglich, den vergleichsweise großen Spalt im Bereich der Gurtöffnung abzudecken und dadurch optisch zu verkleinern, wodurch der optische Gesamteindruck in diesem Bereich deutlich gesteigert werden kann, ohne dass auf der anderen Seite irgendwelche negativen Einschränkungen hinsichtlich der Sicherheit in Kauf genommen werden müssen. Das erfindungsgemäße Verkleidungselement kann beispielsweise aus Kunststoff, insbesondere als kostengünstiges Kunststoffspritzgussteil, ausgebildet sein und dadurch mit vergleichsweise geringen Stückkosten in großer Anzahl hergestellt werden. Zudem ist es möglich, das Verkleidungselement hinsichtlich seiner Farbe an eine Farbe des benachbarten Innenverkleidungsteils anzupassen, wodurch eine optisch besonders unauffällige Gestaltung des Verkleidungselementes gewährleistet werden kann. Eine derartige Selbstausrichtung kann selbstverständlich auch durch mehrere oder entsprechend ausgebildete Clipselemente der Clipsverbindung ohne zusätzliche Pinelemente erreicht werden.
