Im Innenraum eines Kraftfahrzeugs sind üblicherweise beachtlich viele Beleuchtungseinrichtungen vorgesehen, die der Beleuchtung verschiedener Gerätschaften wie Instrumente, Griffmulden etc. oder der allgemeinen Innenraumbeleuchtung als Deckenleuchten oder Seitenleuchten (z. B. auch als Ambientenbeleuchtung) dienen. Auch im Außenbereich sind diverse Beleuchtungseinrichtungen vorgesehen, z. B. Heckleuchten oder Scheinwerfer, die der Erkennbarkeit des Fahrzeugs wie auch zur Ausleuchtung des Fahrzeugvorfelds dienen. Zunehmend werden Lichtleiter eingesetzt, in die über eine Lichtquelle Licht eingekoppelt wird, das andernorts am Lichtleiter wieder ausgekoppelt wird. Häufig ist am Lichtleiter im Bereich des Auskoppelabschnitts eine randseitige Optik vorgesehen, die zum seitlichen Auskoppeln des eingestrahlten Lichts dient. Diese Optik ist beispielsweise in Form einer Oberflächenstrukturierung oder dergleichen realisiert. Im Bereich der Oberflächenstrukturierung wird das Licht zur Seite hin reflektiert, so dass es vom Lichtleiter abgestrahlt wird. Mitunter jedoch ist die von der Lichtquelle eingekoppelte Lichtmenge nicht ausreichend, um die geforderte Beleuchtungsaufgabe zu erfüllen. Beispielsweise kann in einem Scheinwerfer nur ein Lichtleiter mit relativ kurzer Länge verwendet werden, das heißt, dass die Länge des Lichtauskoppelabschnitts kurz ist.
