Der vorgeschlagene Niederdruckkreislauf für ein Kraftstoffeinspritzsystem umfasst einen Kraftstofftank und eine Vorförderpumpe, mittels welcher Kraftstoff aus dem Kraftstofftank ansaugbar und über eine Kraftstoffleitung einem Niederdruckbereich einer Hochdruckpumpe zuführbar ist, wobei im Niederdruckbereich eine Zumesseinheit zur Mengenregulierung angeordnet ist. Erfindungsgemäß ist zur Druckregelung die Vorförderpumpe als geregelte Elektrokraftstoffpumpe ausgelegt. Alternativ oder ergänzend ist der Hochdruckpumpe ein Drucksensor zur Druckregelung vorgeschaltet. Beide Maßnahmen – jeweils allein oder in Kombination – bewirken, dass der Bereich zwischen der Vorförderpumpe und der Zumesseinheit frei von einem federbelasteten Ventil, insbesondere einem Überströmventil, ist. Der Wegfall des Überströmventils vereinfacht zum Einen den Aufbau des Niederdruckkreislaufes, zum Anderen wird die Schadensanfälligkeit verringert. Denn in Ermangelung eines federbelasteten Ventils ist weder durch Federsetzen, noch durch Bauteiltoleranzen im Bereich des Ventils oder Zusetzen eines Filters eine Kennlinienverschiebung zu befürchten.
