Abstract
In order to produce a front contact of a solar cell, a silver metallization in line form is applied to the surface of the solar cell in a first step. In a subsequent step, galvanic tin is applied to the metallization as a build-up layer. In a subsequent step, the build-up layer is first melted and then cooled, as a result of which the build-up layer contracts as it melts due to the cohesive forces in the molten material from a broad and flat layer to a relatively narrow and thick curved layer, which then cools down forms the contact.
Description
Anwendungsgebiet und Stand der TechnikField of application and state of the art
The invention relates to a method for producing a contact of a solar cell, in particular a front contact. Furthermore, the invention relates to a solar cell provided with such a contact.
In the metallization of solar cells for the production of an ohmic contact, in addition to screen printing processes, galvanic and chemical electroless metallizations are also used. These contacts often consist of metallization layers with silver, copper, nickel and tin as well as combinations thereof. A high line conductivity of the metal contacts is advantageous. To improve the conductivity higher layer thicknesses can be applied.
A major problem in the galvanic and chemically electroless metallization is that in this case a stronger shading of the optically active solar cell surface inevitably occurs. This situation is given in all unmasked galvanically and chemically electroless metallizations. This results in the deposition of metal beyond the edge of a base coat. These metal deposits reduce the optically active surface of the solar cells and thus reduce their performance.
A masking to reduce the additional shading in these metallization processes is usually not desirable due to the cost and complex processes.
Aufgabe und LösungTask and solution
The invention has for its object to provide an aforementioned method and a solar cell thus prepared, with which problems of the prior art can be avoided and in particular a safe and cost-effective way to produce such a contact can be created with the efficiency of the Solar cell is not affected as possible.
This object is achieved by a method having the features of claim 1 and a solar cell produced therewith with the features of claim 18. Advantageous and preferred embodiments of the invention are the subject of further claims and are explained in more detail below. Some of the following features are only mentioned for the process or only for the solar cell. However, they should be able to apply to both the process and the solar cell independently. The wording of the claims is incorporated herein by express reference.
It is envisaged that in a preceding step, a metallization of the solar cell or its surface takes place, advantageously in line form or substantially in the form, as will be present after the contact. As metallization, silver or tin or an alloy thereof is preferably applied, which will be explained in more detail below. The metallization can advantageously be applied by means of a printing process, in particular by screen printing, transfer printing or inkjet, otherwise also galvanically or chemically de-energized. Alternatively, spraying or sputtering may be used.
Thus, it can be achieved that, as a result of the melting of the build-up layer, the contact formed therefrom becomes narrower than after application, as a result of which the shading of the solar cell, which reduces its efficiency, is reduced. This makes it possible to apply a certain amount of material for the build-up layer or the subsequent contact on the solar cell, even with methods in which the ratio of layer width to layer thickness is unfavorable or in which a desired layer thickness with a relatively large layer width is reached. However, if especially tin or a tin alloy is to be used as build-up layer, because of its not very good conductivity over, for example, silver or copper relatively much material is required thereof, which just leads to the above-mentioned large layer thicknesses and thus layer widths. By melting with the contraction but the layer width can be reduced again.
Unlike silver, copper and nickel, tin has a much lower melting point from below 300 ° C. The reinforcement of silver-coated contacts by screen printing or other contacts formed as a seed layer through a tin layer makes it possible to melt this layer even at temperatures below 300 ° C. This is advantageous for the solar cell because it also protects it thermally. Tin has a much lower conductivity than silver and copper, which is why tin has been used so far only for the production of a solderable contact. A galvanic reinforcement of the contacts for improved conductivity was therefore usually carried out with an additional silver coating.
If tin is used to strengthen the contacts and to improve the conductivity, then this means that this layer has to be built thicker by about a factor of 5 to 8 in order to have the same conductivity, for example compared to a silver coating. In this case, the shadowing of the optically active layer would be increased by the compulsory broadening at such a layer thickness by an approximately comparable proportional amount, which is why such a metallization would have a negative effect on the solar cell performance. The melting and contraction compensates for this again.
Advantageously, the metallization and the subsequent contact is applied to the front of the solar cell as a front contact. In particular, this is done on an existing there antireflection and passivation layer. It may also be a backside contact in the case of a bifacial solar cell.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, a metal from the group silver, copper, nickel and tin is used for the metallization. On the one hand, it is possible to use only one of these metals in as pure a form as possible. On the other hand, it is particularly advantageous to use a silver alloy or predominantly silver, preferably with some tin. Here, the properties relating to application and conductivity are particularly advantageous, with more being carried out below. In an alternative embodiment, nickel may first be applied to the solar cell as a plating and then copper thereon.
The metallization may have a thickness of 15 .mu.m to 50 .mu.m, advantageously 20 .mu.m to 30 .mu.m. This is well possible with the aforementioned methods. A width may independently be in the range of 20 μm to 200 μm. Advantageously, it should not be too large, since the width of the metallization significantly determines the width of the subsequent contact and thus also the shading of the solar cell, so that widths of 60 .mu.m to 100 .mu.m, for example 80 .mu.m, are particularly preferred. This can advantageously be achieved that the order of additional metal as a conductor material is no longer limited or only to a minor extent by the structure broadening of the metallization below as a base metal layer. The addition of additional metal may thus be less than 10 mg for, for example, 156 × 156 mm solar cells down to the gram range.
In a further embodiment of the invention, it is possible that after the application of the metallization and before applying the build-up layer, a pre-metallization takes place or a seed layer can be applied, advantageously with a thickness in the micron range of 5 microns up to 30 μm. This can be galvanic or electroless, sometimes in turn light-induced, applied or according to the above methods for metallization. Through them, the electrical contact between base, metallization and build-up layer or within the later arising front contact can be improved. Advantageously, this can also be applied to so-called bi-facial solar cells, where light is also captured via the back.
The build-up layer can be applied with a thickness in the μm range, for example from 5 μm to 30 μm, preferably 10 μm to 20 μm. As a result, for example, when printing relatively low-viscosity inks can be used with the corresponding metal therein without them too far apart and thus increase the width undesirable. A width of the build-up layer may be, independently of the thickness, between a few μm and several 100 μm, advantageously between 40 μm and several 100 μm, up to 250 μm. It is advantageous 80 microns to 150 microns, more preferably about 120 microns. The build-up layer should be wider than the metallization, so they overlap. Overlapping takes place particularly advantageously approximately symmetrically, ie on both sides about the same distance.
During melting, the material of the build-up layer, in particular tin, contracts uniformly and thus, as it were, passes from the overlap areas back to the metallization and the previously covered areas of the surface of the solar cell are exposed again. Advantageously, at least 80% to 90%, under some circumstances even a little more, of the material of the build-up layer draws back from the free surface of the solar cell to the metallization.
For melting the tin or tin alloy of the build-up layer, a temperature of at least 250 ° C can be generated or the melting point of the tin of the build-up layer are exceeded, for which temperatures below 250 ° C may be sufficient. Advantageously, it is even further above, for example, at 300 ° C up to 360 ° C or even up to 500 ° C. For this purpose, an oven, a radiant heater, an induction heater or a microwave heating can be used, as is basically known per se. Likewise, it can be heated by means of a laser, which offers the advantage of a more targeted and therefore faster heating, which is more gentle for the solar cell. The temperature should only be chosen in conjunction with the duration of the action of the temperature so that the solar cell as well as the layers applied thereto are not affected or even destroyed. All that needs to be done is melting and contraction of the build-up layer, possibly even alloying with the metallization underneath. Alloying with the metal underneath is advantageous to ensure the conductivity as well as the stability of the overlying layer.
Cooling of the molten material of the build-up layer or the contact can either be done normally in the air, for example after moving out of a reflow oven, or in gas mixtures, which have an advantageous effect on the oxidation of the metal layer. Alternatively, additional cooling can take place, in particular relatively targeted to the contact, for example by flowing with cooling air.
It is possible that when melting the build-up layer, the material penetrates into cavities of the metallization and thus improves the electrical conductivity of a finished contact. Furthermore, it is possible that the material of the build-up layer forms an alloy with the material of the metallization during the reflow, which has a better conductivity than the material of the build-up layer per se. If the metallization of silver or even better a silver alloy, a copper alloy or a nickel-copper alloy, preferably each with a low tin content, so it is possible that a small proportion of silver atoms or copper atoms from the metallization is installed in the build-up layer. As a result, their electrical resistance can be further reduced. The advantage of such an alloy with low tin content is also that at the aforementioned temperatures of 300 ° C up to 360 ° C, a small melting takes place, so that the other atoms can be better incorporated into the tin of the buildup layer , For the improvement of the conductivity of the tin, a very small proportion of silver or copper atoms is sufficient. Furthermore, such an alloy is very resistant to cold or general Tempertureinflüsse because solar cells are indeed used outdoors and thus exposed to at least usual and sometimes extreme weather conditions. Pure tin (β-tin) is stable at temperatures of 13.2 ° C to 162 ° C. At low temperatures β-tin recrystallizes in α-tin (stable below 13.2 ° C). This process, called tin plague, can be suppressed or prevented by alloying with other metals or metals, so that this recrystallization is prevented under climatic conditions. This is advantageous for the durability of solar cell modules.
During the melting of the build-up layer, an advantageously elongated or line-like contact is ultimately produced with a thickness which corresponds to at least 30% to 50% of its width. Advantageously, it can even be at least 70%. The shape of the contact can be placed hood-like or arched on the thereby changing metallization and approximately semicircular or semi-circular. Thus, just a good ratio of width of the contact is achieved to its height, so that not too large width and thus shading sufficient height for a sufficiently thick and thus sufficiently conductive contact is achieved.
Overall, it is possible with the invention, through the use of tin as a further material for the front contact and possibly the back contact to reduce the amount of silver used or copper, for example. Even if you can not completely do without silver or copper, you will need less. The poorer electrical conductivity of tin over silver or alternative metals such as copper is compensated by a thicker tin layer, which, however, is not adversely broad. Above all, by the aforementioned penetration of tin into cavities of the metallization as well as by a resulting silver-tin alloy, the conductivity of tin and in particular the entire contact can be significantly improved. As a result of the melting, the tin, which is not narrower in terms of process engineering, is contracted and thus reverses this negative effect.
