Bei dem bekannten Verfahren werden galvanisch beschichtete Bedien-, Dekor- oder Anzeigeelemente mit hinterleuchtbaren Symbolen versehen. Hierbei werden galvanisierfähige Kunststoffrohlinge im Bereich der Symbolfläche auf der Rückseite abgedeckt. Der Rohling wird danach zur Erzeugung einer dünnen Metallschicht chemisch und gegebenenfalls galvanisch nach einem an sich bekannten Verfahren vorbehandelt. Der Rohling verlässt nach diesem Schritt das galvanische Bad und wird anschließend durch partielles Abtragen der Metallschicht mittels Laserablation weiter bearbeitet, so dass ein Symbol auf der Oberfläche des durchscheinenden oder transparenten Kunststoffs freigestellt wird. Danach wird das Bauteil erneut galvanisch behandelt, wobei der zuvor freigestellt Bereich keinen Metallüberzug erhält.
