The present invention relates to a novel process for the preparation of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole.
Charakteristik der bekannten technischen lösungen Characteristic of the known technical solutions
2-Mercaptobenzthiazol wurde erstmals von A. W. Hofmann im Jahre 1887 beschrieben» Heute wird diese Verbindung sowie ihre Abkömmlinge, die sogenannten "Mercapto's", in großen Mengen hergestellt und zählen zu den wichtigsten Vulkanisationsbeschleunigern.2-mercaptobenzothiazole was first described by A.W. Hofmann in 1887. "Today, this compound and its derivatives, the so-called" mercapto's ", are produced in large quantities and are among the most important vulcanization accelerators.
Es sind zahlreiche Synthesen und Bildungsweisen bekannt· Die wichtigsten Herstellverfahren gehen von o-Nitrochlorbenzol, Schwefelwasserstoff und Schwefelkohlenstoff oder von Anilin, Schwefel und Schwefelkohlenstoff aus (Ullmanns Encyklopädie der technischen Chemie, 3· Auflage (I960), Verlag Urban & Schwarzenberg, München . Berlin, 12. Band, Seite 304).Numerous syntheses and methods of formation are known · The most important production methods are based on o-nitrochlorobenzene, hydrogen sulfide and carbon disulfide or on aniline, sulfur and carbon disulfide (Ullmanns Encyklopadie der technischen Chemie, 3 * Edition (I960), Verlag Urban & Schwarzenberg, Munich , 12th volume, page 304).
Th.After the older discontinuous process, o-nitrochlorobenzene is first reacted with excess sodium hydrogen sulfide at about 100 ° C. to give 2-amino-thiophenol. Subsequently, the reaction mixture is cooled, mixed with excess carbon disulfide and heated again to about 80 - 90 0 C. After cooling, it is acidified with sulfuric acid to precipitate the desired 2-mercaptobenzothiazole. The crude product is purified over the calcium salt. The yield is about 85 % d in this process. Die Ausbeute an Rein-Mercaptobenzthiazol beträgt lediglich ca. 80 %, Preparation of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, aniline is reacted with a solution of sulfur, in carbon disulfide at elevated temperature (250 - 285 0 C) and under a pressure of about bar. The ring closure reaction is the rate-limiting step in this process. It requires drastic conditions and additional catalysis (eg phosphorus or mercury and iodine compounds). As a result of these reaction conditions, the resulting crude mercaptobenzothiazole is contaminated with tarry by-products and must be purified by dissolution and precipitation with sulfuric acid. The yield of pure mercaptobenzothiazole is only about 80 %,
It is also already known to use a nitro or nitroso compound, for example nitrobenzene, in the preparation of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole. In the process of US Pat. No. 2,001,587, aniline, carbon disulfide and nitrobenzene are heated in an autoclave at 220 ° C. for 6 hours , The carbon disulfide reacts with the aniline to form an addition product and the nitrobenzene is needed instead of the elemental sulfur for the ring closure reaction, simultaneously reducing it to a nitrogen compound having a lower valence state.
Bei dieser Synthese werden auf 5 Mole Anilin 2 Mole Nitrobenzol eingesetzt, das Nitro-The reaction mixture is then dissolved in sodium hydroxide, filtered and then treated with hydrochloric or sulfuric acid, wherein the 2-mercaptobenzothiazole precipitates. Aniline sulfur, nitrobenzene and carbon disulfide are reacted together at elevated temperature and elevated pressure in the melt according to the process of SU-PS 179 306 (CA 65, 2268 f (1966).) In this synthesis, 2 moles of nitrobenzene are added to 5 moles of aniline used, the nitro

Setzt man dieses Reaktionsgemisch anschließend mit Schwefelkohlenstoff um, so erhält man dennoch bezogen auf eingesetztesIn fact, the reaction is much more complicated and consists of a large number of individual reactions, some of which take place side by side, partly in succession. In any case, can be ruled out with certainty that the nitrobenzene is first quantitatively reduced by the hydrogen sulfide to aniline, which then reacts in a known manner with carbon disulfide to 2-mercaptobenzothiazole. Hydrogen sulphide does not reduce nitrobenzene until the addition of a catalyst, temperatures above 150 ° C noticeably lower; Although it is formed as the main reaction product in a yield of about 75 % aniline, but in addition arise at least ten other reduction products with aromatic nitrogen groups. Nitrobenzene gives an almost quantitative yield of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, i. a much higher yield than the content of the reaction mixture of aniline corresponds .. It follows that, surprisingly, the other reduction products are converted into 2-mercaptobenzothiazole. If the reduction of the nitrobenzene with hydrogen sulfide is carried out at temperatures above 170 ° C., for example at 200 ° C., the result is mainly viscous, polymeric compounds which subsequently can no longer be converted into 2-mercaptobenzothiazole with carbon disulfide.
As stated above, the stoichiometric ratio of the reactants nitrobenzene, hydrogen sulfide and carbon disulfide is 1: 2: 1. Excess of hydrogen sulfide and carbon disulfide exert a favorable influence on the selectivity of the reaction to 2-mercaptobenzothiazole and on the purity thereof. There are therefore used per mole of nitrobenzene 3 to 6 moles of hydrogen sulfide and 1 to 3 moles of carbon disulfide. Particularly preferred is a molar ratio of nitrobenzene: hydrogen sulfide: carbon disulfide such as 1: 3.2 to 4: 1.2 to 2.2. Larger excesses of hydrogen sulfide and carbon disulfide have no adverse effect. on the reaction, but are not recommended for economic reasons.
Wie bei allen massenübergangsbestimmten Reaktionen ist auch im vorliegenden Fall die Reaktionszeit druckabhängig und es können z.B. durch Steigerung des Schwefelwasserstoffdruckes kürzere ReaktionszeitenThe reaction pressure is not critical in the "nitrobenzene process variant" according to the invention and is determined by the partial pressures of the reactants at the chosen reaction temperatures. It can be worked in a wide pressure range from 1 bar to 150 bar, for example in the range of 5 - 100 bar, in particular 8-15 bar. Preferably, the reactions are carried out under the intrinsic partial pressure of the reactants.
Bei der Cyclisierung sind auch höhereIn contrast to the reaction pressure, the reaction temperature in the "nitrobenzene process variant" according to the invention is significant. While virtually no reaction takes place at about 100 ° C, above 100 C, the reduction of the nitrobenzene initially slow and runs from 150 C sufficiently quickly, with various nitrogen compounds are formed with lower oxidation number of the nitrogen atom. In the case of the presence of carbon disulfide, at the same time, even a slight cyclization of these carbon disulfide reduction products occurs. Essential to the invention is that the reaction temperature does not rise above 170 C before the nitrobenzene is not substantially reduced. Otherwise arise tarry by-products, which of course at the expense of the yield and purity of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole go. Above 170 ° C., especially from 200 ° C., the cyclization of the reduction products to 2-mercaptobenzothiazole takes place in a relatively rapid reaction. Preferably, first, i. during the reaction of the nitrobenzene with the hydrogen sulfide, temperatures of 150 to 170 ° C and then, i.e., during the reaction of the resulting reaction mixture with carbon disulfide, temperatures of 200 to 250 C applied. In the cyclization are also higher

With regard to the reaction time of the "nitrobenzene process variants", no general statement is possible, since this is dependent on a number of factors, such as e.g. the stoichiometric ratio of the reaction components, the reaction pressure, the reaction temperature and in particular the stirring speed. The end of the reaction can be very easily determined by setting a constant reaction pressure. Whereas in the first reaction stage the pressure initially drops due to the consumption of hydrogen sulfide, in the second reaction stage it finally rises above 200 ° C. by the onset of the cyclization reaction and the associated formation of new hydrogen sulfide. After complete conversion of the nitrobenzene to the second Mercaptobenzothiazole or after complete reaction of the reaction products of nitrobenzene and hydrogen sulfide with carbon disulfide, the pressure remains constant and is only a function of temperature.

Conveniently, the reduction is carried out in the presence of an inert solvent. Suitable for this purpose are lower aliphatic alcohols having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, e.g. Methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, butanol, isobutanol, amyl alcohols and isoamyl alcohols, further cyclohexane and hydrocarbons, e.g. Ligroin and kerosene fractions, aromatics and alkylaromatics such. Benzene, toluene, xylenes, ethylbenzene and cumene. Preferred solvents are benzene, toluene, xylenes, cyclohexane, methanol, ethanol and isopropanol. The resulting reaction mixture is then heated using temperatures of at least 200 ° C. In this embodiment of the process according to the invention, it is expedient to proceed in such a way that the solid nitrosobenzene is first dissolved or suspended in carbon disulfide and then fed to the hydrogen sulphide. The supply of hydrogen sulfide takes place here also in a temperature range of 20 to 100 C. In. Hydrogen sulfide pressed into the reaction vessel and then the solution to 160 - 170 ° C heated. When no further hydrogen sulfide consumption (pressure drop) could be detected, the reaction mixture was heated to 240 ° -25 ° C. with vigorous stirring. After the reaction was complete (constant H-S pressure), the reaction vessel was depressurized and the exhaust gas was analyzed by gas chromatography. The reactor was then emptied by either the reaction mixture taken at 150 180 ° C via the bottom drain valve as a melt or the reaction mixture was suspended after cooling to room temperature in methanol and the sulfur formed by filtration from 2-mercaptobenzothiazole was separated. After removal of the methanol, the purity of the MBT formed was determined by titration and chromatography (HPLC). Further purification of the 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (e.g., by falling over its alkali salt) was not necessary. Polymer products, such as those produced using aniline or o-chloronitrobenzene, did not occur.
Table I below summarizes the process conditions and the yields obtained. Yields are based on pure 2-mercaptobenzothiazole. They were determined by acidimetric and argentometric titration.
