Abstract

In the process (1) the wastewater is first chemically preclarified in a preclarification tank by addition of a solution of salts of polyvalent metals, until the ratio between biological oxygen demand (BOD5) and total nitrogen is less than 4.5; (2) the preclarified wastewater in an anaerobic region of the first part of a two-part activation tank, in an anaerobic intermediate tank or in an anaerobic region of the preclarification tank together with activated return sludge from a solid-liquid separating device is optionally subjected to a biological liberation of phosphate; (3) a mixture of the wastewater obtained from stage (1) or (2) and nitrate-containing returned water with activated sludge, which are pumped through an opening in the partition between the two parts of the activation tank directly from the second aerobic part of the activation tank, is subjected to a denitrification in an anoxic region of the activation tank adjoining the anaerobic region; (4) the denitrified sludge/wastewater mixture, in a separate aerobic region in the first part of the activation tank is subjected to a nitrification and the decomposition of the organic load; (5) the nitrate-containing sludge/wastewater mixture is passed directly into the second, aerobic part of the activation tank and the nitrification and the decomposition of the organic load is continued there; (6) a greater part of the resulting nitrate-containing wastewater with activated sludge is pumped back through an opening in the partition between the two parts of the activation tank as returned water into the anoxic region of the first activation tank and a smaller part of the wastewater together with activated sludge is passed into a solid-liquid separating device; and (7) a solution of salts of polyvalent metals for phosphate precipitation is fed into the inlet of the solid-liquid separating device and the flocculated sludge is separated from the clarified wastewater. a
