技术领域
本发明大体地涉及对于辐射检测器和由其制造的辐射检测器有用的闪烁体材料,特别是涉及可以作为薄片使用和/或以相对低温处理的闪烁体材料,以及由其制造的辐射检测器。
背景技术
固态闪烁体材料长久以来在例如x射线计数器和图像增强器的应用中用作辐射检测器来检测穿透性辐射。当被x射线或者其它高能电磁光子激励时,闪烁体材料发射可见或者近可见辐射。在典型的医疗或者工业应用中,闪烁体的光输出被定向到光电响应器件以产生电输出信号,其中信号的幅度和存储的能量成比例。然后电信号可以由计算机数字化以用于在屏幕上或者其它持久性的媒体来显示。这种检测器在计算机层析(CT)扫描器、数字射线照相术(DR)、以及其它x射线、伽马辐射(gamma radiation)、紫外线辐射、和核辐射检测应用中起重要作用。在医疗应用中,尤其希望闪烁体有效地吸收穿过患者的几乎全部x射线,从而检测器最大限度地利用所施予的高能,患者不用遭受高于必要的辐射剂量。

关于闪烁体的另一个重要的考虑因素是减少闪烁体由于其反复暴露于高能辐射而出现的损坏。采用固态闪烁体材料将高能辐射转换为光学图像的射线照相装置在闪烁体暴露于高剂量辐射后可能经历效率的改变。例如暴露于汞灯的紫外线辐射三十分钟后,锗酸铋单晶闪烁体的辐射损坏可能高达11%。对于更高能量的伽马辐射有类似的结果报告。而且,锗酸铋闪烁体晶体间辐射损坏的偏差较大,接近至少为30的因数。当多晶型陶瓷闪烁体暴露于高能辐射剂量时可以发现类似的效率改变。
闪烁体中辐射损坏的特征在于伴随长时间暴露于辐射的光输出的改变和/或闪烁体主体的颜色变暗。辐射损坏可以导致来自前次扫描的“幻像(ghostimages)”,其因此降低了图像分辨率。随辐射损害时出现的光输出改变在相同的闪烁体的不同批次间经常有幅度的差异,使得难以预测任何个别的闪烁体将如何随时间改变,从而使得难于实施定量的修正措施。例如对于140kVP的450伦琴x射线来说,取决于闪烁体的批次,铕活化的氧化钇-氧化钆陶瓷闪烁体表现出4-33%的光输出降低。这种作为x射线损坏的结果出现的光输出差异量在定量x射线检测器中是不希望存在的。
此外由于其高熔点和闪烁体覆层的厚度,当前的非水溶性闪烁体材料难于制造,必须施加所述闪烁体覆层用于阻止X射线到达和损坏检测器。厚覆层也导致低效光透射。
发明内容
本发明一方面提供了一种烧结的、退火的闪烁体组合物。在退火之前,该组合物包含具有式A3B2C3O12的石榴石,其中A是由Tb、Ce、和Lu组成的组中的至少一种或者其组合,B是八面体位置(Al),以及C是四面体位置(也是Al)。石榴石包含选自下列组的至少一种替换物:(1)在八面体位置B,在式中用Sc替换0.05直到2个Al原子;(2)用氟替换式中0.005直到两个氧原子,并且在A位置有相同数量的Ca原子替换;(3)用Mg在位置B替换式中0.005到2个原子,并且用氟替换相同数量的氧原子;(4)用由Mg/Si、Mg/Zr、Mg/Ti、和Mg/Hf组成的组中选择的至少一种组合的原子在位置B替换式中0.005直到两个原子;(5)用由Li/Nb和Li/Ta组成的组中选择的至少一种组合的原子在位置B替换式中0.005直到两个原子;以及(6)用Ca在A位置替换式中0.005直到两个原子并且用硅替换相等数量的B或者C位置。

(6)用Ca在A位置替换式中0.005直到两个原子并且用硅替换相等数量的B或者C位置;
其中所述替换组合物A退火之前在1725℃进行烧结。
本发明不同的配置提供了短的衰变时间,并且相对于已知的闪烁体组合物在暴露于高能辐射时具有降低了的损坏。另外,本发明闪烁体组合物的配置具有高于已知闪烁体组合物的密度,从而提供了较高的辐射阻断能力以防止对半导体检测器阵列的损坏,闪烁体组合物沉积在该检测器阵列上。

具体实施方式
术语“荧光体”和“闪烁体”以可互换的方式用于表示固态发光材料,其响应于例如X、β、或者γ辐射的高能辐射的激励而发射可见光。
术语“高能辐射”意指具有比紫外线辐射能量更高的电磁辐射,包含但不限于X辐射(这里也指如x射线辐射)、伽马(γ)辐射、和贝塔(β)辐射。固态闪烁体材料通常在例如计数器、图像增强器、和计算机层析(“CT”)扫描器的装置中用作辐射检测器部件。
术语“辐射损坏”指的是发光材料具有这样的特性,在发光材料暴露于高能辐射剂量后,响应于给定的激励辐射强度发光材料所发射的光量发生改变。术语“辐射损坏”也可描述由于闪烁体中辐射剂量产生的缺陷造成的闪烁效率改变。
如这里所使用的,术语“光输出”是闪烁体在被例如X射线辐射等高能辐射脉冲激发后发射的可见光的量。
术语“余辉”是闪烁体在x射线激发停止之后在规定的时间发射的光,报告为在闪烁体被X辐射激发时发射的光的百分比。如这里所用的,规定的时间是100毫秒。
术语“衰变时间”、“初始衰变”、或者“初始速度”是发射光的强度下降为高能激发停止之后的时刻光强度的大约36.8%(或者l/e)所需的时间。
术语“阻断能力”指的是材料吸收X辐射的能力;这通常也称为衰减或者吸收。具有高阻断能力的材料允许很少或者不允许X辐射通过。阻断能力成比例于闪烁体和其中包含的元素的密度。这样,生产具有高密度的闪烁体是有利的。
本发明涉及铽或者镥铝氧化物石榴石X射线闪烁体中的某些替换,用例如铈的稀土金属离子活化并且在烧结过程中或者烧结之后通过在高温下以及规定的氧气环境中进行加热(退火)处理以减少在其它情况下当闪烁体材料暴露于高能辐射时会出现的辐射损坏。更特别地,本发明的一些配置包括化学混合物、溶液、或者化合物,由具有高密度石榴石的有源闪烁体(铽镥铝石榴石,或者“LuTAG”)的组合产生。这样的组合物具有能够使沉积在检测器阵列上的闪烁体更薄的优点,同时仍然阻断(并且因此保护检测器)x射线,否则x射线将穿过已知的闪烁体组合物。此外,因为横穿较少的材料,所以更薄的闪烁体组合物使得闪烁的光透射更加有效。同样,当光向检测器二极管传播时,闪烁体的边缘弹回较少的光。同样,较薄的闪烁体覆层易于制造,因为制造检测器模块需要切割较少的材料,并且更容易正确地对准模块。本发明的一些组合物由于多元共晶也具有较低的熔点,并且这样不仅易于制造而且也需要较少的能量、以及更低成本的熔炉用于制造。
稀土石榴石的基本晶体结构是A3B2C3O12,其中在这个化学式中,A是变形的立方型(通常为Tb、Ce、和/或Lu),B是八面体位置(通常为Al),以及C是四面体位置(通常为Al)。然而在本发明的一些配置中,用具有较高阻断能力的化学元素来替换Al的低阻断能力。阻断能力和Z(原子序数)成比例,所以选择具有较高原子序数的适当元素。允许替换的数量取决于离子半径和类型,且进一步取决于电荷平衡。本发明一些配置中使用的适当的替换包含:
(1)在八面体位置B,用Sc替换式中多达2个Al原子。在本发明的一些配置中,在化学计量关系上用Sc原子替换一个或者两个Al原子,但是在一个和两个原子之间的任何范围以及在大于零(例如0.05)和两个原子之间的任何范围(例如在x和y之间,其中x选自0.05、0.1、0.2、0.3、0.4、0.5、0.6、0.7、0.8、0.9、1.0、1.1、1.2、1.3、1.4、1.5、1.6、1.7、1.8、或者1.9,以及y选择为大于x并且选自0.1、0.2、0.3、0.4、0.5、0.6、0.7、0.8、0.9、1.0、1.1、1.2、1.3、1.4、1.5、1.6、1.7、1.8、1.9、或者2.0)非化学计量的混合物希望给出恰当的结果。
(2)用氟替换式中氧,并且用Ca替换A位置的原子(这种替换物因为Ca和F引入电荷平衡而有效),其中在A位置上在大于零(例如0.005)直到大约1个原子之间(例如在x和y之间,其中x选自0.05、0.1、0.2、0.3、0.4、0.5、0.6、0.7、0.8、0.9、1.0、1.1、1.2、1.3、1.4、1.5、1.6、1.7、1.8、或者1.9,以及y选择为大于x并且选自0.1、0.2、0.3、0.4、0.5、0.6、0.7、0.8、0.9、1.0、1.1、1.2、1.3、1.4、1.5、1.6、1.7、1.8、1.9、或者2.0)进行代替。在位置A用Ca替换的原子数量等于用氟替换的氧原子数量以产生电荷平衡。
(3)用氟替换式中氧,并且用Mg替换B位置的原子(这种替换物因为Mg和F引入电荷平衡而有效),其中在B位置上在0.005直到2个原子之间(例如在x和y之间,其中x选自0.05、0.1、0.2、0.3、0.4、0.5、0.6、0.7、0.8、0.9、1.0、1.1、1.2、1.3、1.4、1.5、1.6、1.7、1.8、或者1.9,以及y选择为大于x并且选自0.1、0.2、0.3、0.4、0.5、0.6、0.7、0.8、0.9、1.0、1.1、1.2、1.3、14、1.5、1.6、1.7、1.8、1.9、或者2.0)进行代替。在位置B用Mg替换的原子数量等于用氟替换的氧原子数量以产生电荷平衡。
(4)在B位置上,在式中用2+/4+的组合在大于零(例如0.005)直到两个原子之间进行替换,该2+/4+的组合例如是仅仅作为例子的Mg/Si、Mg/Zr、Mg/Ti、或者Mg/Hf,列出的配对中的后者提供最大的阻断能力。例如在一些配置中,在B位置上代替的原子的总数量在x和y之间,其中x选自大于零,例如0.005、0.1、0.2、0.3、0.4、0.5、0.6、0.7、0.8、0.9、1.0、1.1、1.2、1.3、1.4、1.5、1.6、17、1.8、或者1.9,以及y大于x并且选自例如0.1、0.2、0.3、0.4、0.5、0.6、0.7、0.8、0.9、1.0、1.1、1.2、1.3、1.4、1.5、1.6、1.7、1.8、1.9、或者2.0);

(6)在A位置用Ca替换大于零个直到两个原子并且用Si替换相等数量的B或者C位置,例如在A位置代替的Ca原子的数量在x和y之间,其中x选自0.005、0.1、0.2、0.3、0.4、0.5、0.6、0.7、0.8、0.9、1.0、1.1、1.2、1.3、1.4、1.5、1.6、1.7、1.8、或者1.9,以及y选择为大于x并且选自0.1、0.2、0.3、0.4、0.5、0.6、0.7、0.8、0.9、1.0、1.1、1.2、1.3、1.4、1.5、1.6、1.7、1.8、1.9、或者2.0。
在下面的表格中,LO等于用60kvp、5ma的x射线产生的、用光电二极管测量的光和标准LuTAG相比较的百分比(%);AG等于0.5秒的60kvp、50ma的x射线脉冲之后100ms产生光的百分比(%);以及RD等于120kvp、250mA、12秒剂量之后产生的光的百分比(%)改变,其中使用60kvp、5ma、0.5sec的激励脉冲(tickle pulse)。所有退火样本在1200C于空气中退火接近24小时。同样,在下面的样本中,使用的“LuTAG”组合物不具有基本的A3B2C3O12式或者(Tb,Lu,Ce)3Al5O12其中B=C=Al。取而代之地,使用的LuTAG有意地轻微偏离化学计量以更好地满足一定的闪烁体性质。替代化学计量上的LuTAG,在(Tb,Lu,Ce)3Al5O12基质中使用钙钛矿(Tb,Ce)AlO3的第二相。

本发明闪烁体组合物的配置具有短的衰变时间并且在暴露于高能辐射时具有相对于已知闪烁体组合物降低的损坏。另外,本发明闪烁体组合物的配置具有比当前用于CT扫描器的闪烁体组合物更高的密度,从而提供较高的辐射阻断能力以防止对有闪烁体组合物沉积其上的半导体检测器阵列的损坏。例如,并且参考附图,本发明闪烁体组合物的一种构造10沉积在或者通过其它方式放置在半导体阵列12上或者基本上毗邻半导体阵列12,半导体阵列12包括一个或者多个光敏元件以形成x射线检测器14。检测器14可以利用闪烁体的薄覆层10来提供有效的x射线检测,然而仍然是高抗损坏性的。
退火在受控的(即规定的)气氛下实施。通常,退火在存在氧的情况下发生。优选地,受控的氧气氛包括范围从大约1×10-18到大约1大气压(atm)的氧分压。优选地,受控的氧气氛包括范围从大约1×10-13到大约1atm的氧分压。更加优选地,受控的氧气氛包括范围从大约1×10-8到大约0.5atm的氧分压。甚至更加优选地,受控的氧气氛包括范围从大约1×10-6到大约0.22atm的氧分压。
同样优选地,退火温度包括范围从1000℃到1500℃。退火步骤可能在正常的冷却步骤期间实施,冷却步骤发生在闪烁体材料的焙烧之后。可替代地,退火可能在已经被冷却到室温的闪烁体上实施(即通过再加热)。优选地,退火的时间周期包括范围从0.5到大约24小时(h)。
闪烁体在退火步骤之后优选被冷却到室温。优选地,冷却的速度范围在每小时150℃和500℃之间。更加优选地,使用大约每小时300℃的冷却速度。
在氧存在情况下退火的运用降低了稀土活化的含铽或者镥的石榴石闪烁体对于辐射引起的损坏的敏感性。稀土活化的含铽或者镥的石榴石闪烁体是特别理想的,因为其如这里所讨论的相对短的衰变速度,使得CT系统具有更快的扫描时间。
在一个实施方式中,退火步骤改变了所述闪烁体的氧含量。虽然确切的改变量难于量化,确信的是化学计量中氧的微小改变可能发生在通过本发明方法的石榴石闪烁体的处理中。
辐射损坏(RD)可能通过在高能辐射剂量之前和之后测量光输出强度的改变来确定,其中II是开始的(前辐射剂量)光输出强度而IF是最终的(后辐射剂量)光输出强度。这样,辐射损坏百分比(%RD)=[(IF-II)/II]×100。可以看到高能辐射处理之后光输出的增大包括正的RD值,而辐射处理之后光输出的减小包括负的RD值。然而,RD值越接近零(正的或者负的),闪烁体越好地响应高能辐射而不发生效率的改变。通常,范围从+2到-2百分比的RD值是优选的,+1到-1百分比的值是更加优选的,并且+0.5到-0.5百分比的值甚至是更加优选的。
对闪烁体的辐射损坏改变闪烁体能够将高能激发辐射转换为可测量信号的效率。因而,研制对辐射损坏具有抵抗力的闪烁体是重要的,从而闪烁体对激发辐射的灵敏度在长期的使用中基本上保持恒定。对许多运用而言,闪烁体光输出的稳定性和再现性是重要的。例如,辐射损坏可以导致来自前次扫描的“幻像”,其因此降低了图像分辨率。因为在辐射损坏时发生的闪烁体响应的差异是高度变化的,所以难于研制定量的修正措施。在定量x射线检测器中,x射线损坏导致的闪烁体效率的数量和差异通常是不希望的,且其限制了这种成像技术的适用性。
辐射损坏在闪烁体中引起缺陷,进而可以为特定辐射剂量更改闪烁效率。这样的缺陷通常是色心,其具有在闪烁体发射波长给予光学吸收带的电结构。色心的结合能决定损坏的寿命,但一般而言这个能量足够大,损坏可以在室温下持续从数秒到数天。
难于估计使用闪烁体进行射线照相成像时辐射损坏的影响,因而希望研制对暴露于高能辐射下表现出最小效率改变的闪烁体。辐射损坏经验上通过将闪烁体暴露于相应的辐射剂量并且测量在损坏剂量前后获得的光输出改变来表征。在损坏脉冲结束后,复原可以描画为时间的函数。这样的信息可用于辨别由于色心吸收或者降低活化剂发射效率的其它缺陷中心引起的辐射损坏,但在临床使用时其对特定闪烁体将如何响应的预测并非显著地有教益。
同样,对于量化辐射损坏在闪烁体功能上的影响几个因素是重要的。为了准确的测量,对产生测量脉冲的源的差异进行补偿是重要的。同样,对于源自辐射剂量的残留余辉而言,必须对具有高余辉的闪烁体进行补偿。另外,因为闪烁光的吸收决定于穿过晶体的路径长度,所以损坏的测量值决定于闪烁体的几何形状,例如晶体厚度和透明度。同样,虽然辐射损坏典型地减小闪烁效率,但也存在某些情况,例如CsI:TI闪烁体,其效率增加。虽然没有完全了解,但确信的是,这样的增加效率可能源于缺陷中心的修改或者中和,否则该缺陷中心将降低闪烁体的效率。
从而有益的是,本发明的配置提供了短的衰变时间并且在暴露于高能辐射下相对于已知的闪烁体组合物具有降低了的损坏。另外,本发明闪烁体组合物的配置具有比已知闪烁体组合物高的密度,从而提供了较高的辐射阻断能力以防止损坏有闪烁体组合物沉积其上的半导体检测器阵列。
虽然根据各种各样特定的实施方式描述了本发明,本领域的技术人员应当认识到,本发明可以用在权利要求的主旨和范围内进行修改。
Claims (10)
1、一种经过烧结和退火的闪烁体组合物,在退火之前包括:
具有式A3B2C3O12的石榴石,其中A是具有由Tb、Ce、和Lu组成的组中的至少一种或者其组合的位置,B是八面体位置(Al),以及C是四面体位置(也是Al),具有选自下列组的至少一种替换:
(1)在八面体位置B,用Sc替换式中0.05直到2个原子的Al;
(2)用氟替换式中0.005直到两个原子的氧,并且在A位置有相同数量原子的Ca替换;
(3)用Mg在位置B替换式中0.005到2个原子,并且用氟替换相同数量原子的氧;
(4)用由Mg/Si Mg/Zr、Mg/Ti、和Mg/Hf组成的组中选择的至少一种组合的原子在位置B替换式中0.005直到两个原子;
(5)用由Li/Nb和Li/Ta组成的组中选择的至少一种组合的原子在位置B替换式中0.005直到两个原子;以及
(6)用Ca在A位置替换式中0.005直到两个原子并且用硅替换相等数量的B或者C位置。
2、一种经过退火的组合物,其在退火之前主要由权利要求1的替换组合物组成。
3、根据权利要求1的一种组合物,其中所述的石榴石包含(Tb,Ce)AlO3的第二相。
4、根据权利要求3的一种组合物,位于半导体检测器矩阵之上或者基本上与其毗邻,以便与其相结合形成x射线检测器阵列(12)。
5、根据权利要求1的一种组合物,位于半导体检测器矩阵之上或者基本上与其毗邻,以便与其相结合形成x射线检测器阵列(12)。
6、根据权利要求1的组合物,在退火之前具有式Tb2.9489Lu.05Ce.0051Sc2Al2.996O12。
7、根据权利要求6的组合物,在1200℃空气中退火约24小时。
8、根据权利要求7的组合物,退火之前在1725℃进行烧结。
9、根据权利要求1的组合物,在退火之前具有式Tb2.9489Lu.05Ce.0051ScAl3.996O12。
10、一种经过烧结和退火的闪烁体组合物,在退火之前包括:
具有式A3B2C3O12的石榴石,其中A是由Tb、Ce、和Lu组成的组中的至少一种或者其组合,B是八面体位置(Al),以及C是四面体位置(也是Al),具有选自下列组的至少一种替换:
(1)在八面体位置B,用Sc替换式中0.05直到2个原子的Al;
(2)用氟替换式中0.005直到两个原子的氧,并且在A位置有相同数量的Ca原子替换;
(3)用Mg在位置B替换式中0.005到2个原子,并且用氟替换相同数量原子的氧;
(4)用由Mg/Si Mg/Zr、Mg/Ti、和Mg/Hf组成的组中选择的至少一种组合的原子在位置B替换式中0.005直到两个原子;
(5)用由Li/Nb和Li/Ta组成的组中选择的至少一种组合的原子在位置B替换式中0.005直到两个原子;以及
(6)用Ca在A位置替换式中0.005直到两个原子并且用硅替换相等数量的B或者C位置;
其中所述替换的组合物A退火之前在1725℃进行烧结。
