2002年1月3日公布的美国专利申请编号US 2002/0002707,也揭示了这样一种系统,其中手持设备不能全部显示被接收的视频流的内容,并且因此在所包括的显示器上呈现一部分内容。
在上述每一个系统中,无论手持设备的性能如何,都要把全部视频流发送到手持设备。对于手持设备来说,这会要求高的通信信道费。
本发明的一个目的是提供一种具有用于与住宅网关系统通信并且控制住宅网关系统的手持控制器的住宅网关系统,其中在住宅网关系统和手持控制器之间的通信信道被有效地使用。
本发明的另一个目的是提供一种具有用于与住宅网关系统通信并且控制住宅网关系统的手持控制器的住宅网关系统,其中信息被以特定用户想要的格式提供给手持控制器。
本发明的另一个目的是提供一种具有用于与住宅网关系统通信并且控制住宅网关系统的手持控制器的住宅网关系统,其中,响应于特定用户的优先选择,住宅网关系统自动地将信息提供给手持设备用于在显示器上显示。
可以在一种住宅网关系统中达到这个目的,所述系统包括用于从各种源接收广播视频信号的装置;用于显示视频信号的装置;被耦合到所述接收装置用于在所述显示装置上选择性地显示视频信号的住宅网关;以及具有显示屏的手持控制器,所述手持控制器通过一个网络信道被耦合到所述住宅网关,用于与所述住宅网关通信并且控制所述住宅网关,其中所述住宅网关包括用于存储所述手持控制器和所述网络信道的属性的装置;以及代码转换装置,该代码转换装置用于响应于所述被存储的属性而代码转换视频信号,以便在所述网络信道上传输到所述手持控制器,所述被代码转换的视频信号能够被所述网络信道处理,并且在不经过所述手持控制器进一步处理的情况下,能够在所述手持控制器的显示屏上被显示。
申请人已经发现,当全部视频信号被发送到手持控制器,手持控制器不能显示这样的视频信号时,因为手持控制器在能够显示视频信号之前必须代码转换所述视频信号,所以网络信道的容量被不必要地使用。如果视频信号在传输之前被代码转换,则包括其它视频信号的其它信息可以在网络信道的容量内同时被发送到手持控制器(并且被从手持控制器发出)。
在本发明的住宅网关系统的一个实施方案中,网络信道和手持控制器的属性包括所述网络信道和显示屏的带宽性能,其中包括所述显示屏的分辨率和刷新速率,并且所述代码转换装置代码转换所述视频信号以便至少与所述显示屏的带宽一致。
在这种住宅网关系统中,当代码转换所述视频信号时,住宅网关的代码转换装置考虑到网络信道和显示屏的带宽性能。这样,要求被发送的视频信号适合所述手持设备的显示屏的性能,不必要的信息不被发送到所述手持设备。
在本发明的住宅网关系统的另一个实施方案中,所述住宅网关系统还包括用于存储视频信号并且用于重放被存储的视频信号的装置,并且所述代码转换装置通过执行视频内容分析还能够代码转换被存储的视频信号,并且其中所述视频内容分析可替代地包括提供被存储的视频信号的一系列静止图像和一个文本摘要,并且提供一系列相关的视频和音频。
在这种住宅网关系统中,包括一种记录装置和重放装置,用于记录和/或重放被记录的视频信号。这样,当代码转换装置使得被发送的记录的视频信号的带宽适合于显示屏时,所述代码转换装置可替代地可以分析所述被存储的视频信号的视频内容,并且可替代地提供所述被存储的视频信号的一系列静止图像和一个文本摘要,以及所述被存储的视频信号的一系列相关的视频和音频剪辑。
在了解了上面的以及在下文中将呈现的另外的目的和优点的情况下,结合附图将描述本发明,其中:

如图1中所示,一种住宅网关系统包括具有总线12的住宅网关10,总线12用于将所述住宅网关连接到电视接收机14、机顶盒16、卫星接收机18以及有关的卫星天线20、DVD播放器22、音频系统24、电话26、电缆电视连接28、VCR 30、数字录像机32、数字录音机34、模拟录音机36(例如,盒式录音机)、传真机38、电话通信连接40、以及个人计算机(PC)41。住宅网关10还被提供了到互联网42的连接,并且还包括被连接到它的存储器44。应当理解,这些设备是示范的,其它设备也可以,或者可替代地可以被连接到住宅网关10。
住宅网关10还包括收发信机46,用于通过网络48发送信息到具有显示屏52的手持控制器50,以及从该手持控制器50接收信息。尽管所示的网络48是无线的,即,红外线或者RF,但是所述网络也可以是有线连接。
如图2中所示,手持设备50还包括用于从网络48接收信息并且将信息应用于网络48的收发信机54,以及用于处理所述信息并且用于选择性地将视频信号应用于显示器52的处理器56。手持设备50还包括用于接收来自用户的指令的键盘58,以及用于存储信息的存储器60。还提供了用于再现音频信号的扬声器62。可替代地,也可以提供用于音频信号再现的耳机插孔(未被显示)。
住宅网关10包括被耦合到收发信机46的处理器64,特别用于接收来自例如卫星接收机/天线18、20、机顶盒16和电缆连接28的广播输入,以及来自例如DVD播放器22、VCR 30和数字录像机32的被存储的输入的广播视频信号。处理器64具有被连接到它的用于存储信息的存储器66以及用于选择性地代码转换视频信号的代码转换器68。存储器66可以与存储器44相同,或者可以是另外的存储器。处理器64选择性地将视频信号应用于显示器(例如,电视接收机14),并且将可以包括被代码转换的视频信号的信息应用于收发信机46,以便传输到手持控制器50。
代码转换器68基于被应用的视频信号的媒体代码转换而执行一种压缩。例如,HDTV信号的分辨率被降低到手持控制器50的显示屏52可显示的程度。在被存储的视频信号的情况下,代码转换器68依靠视频内容分析。所以,被代码转换的信号可以包括所述视频内容的一系列静止图像和一个文本抄本(transcript)。可替代地,被代码转换的信号可以包括一系列汇总所述视频内容的重要瞬时的视频剪辑。而且,通过到互联网42的连接、卫星接收机18和天线20、电缆28和电话线40,住宅网关10能够接入新闻、天气、交通以及其它生活信息。所以,代码转换器68通过产生文本流(streamer)来代码转换这个信息以便应用于手持控制器50的显示屏52。
展望未来,住宅网关系统可以被居住在住处中的不同的家庭成员使用。所以,希望手持控制器50的显示屏52上的显示适合不同家庭成员的需要。图3显示在手持控制器50中的存储器60的图解结构。存储器60包括用于存储例如4个不同用户的简档72-78的简档部分70。图4显示在手持控制器50的显示屏52上的一个显示,在这个例子中是触敏式的。当手持控制器50被接通时,显示屏52连同分别对应于被存储的简档72-78的4个图标82-88一起显示消息80“你是谁”。当用户触摸适当的图标时,相应的简档被发送到住宅网关10用于存储在存储器66中。在选择了适当的图标82-88之后,手持控制器50开始根据被选择的用户图标的简档来显示被代码转换的视频图像。
图5A-5D在显示屏52上显示对应于代码转换器68的不同模式的实例图像。特别地,在图5A中,被存储的视频信号已经被选择并且代码转换器68提供了一系列静止图像或者视频剪辑90以及被存储的视频节目的文本摘要92。在图5B中,当前的广播视频信号94正被观看,同时,在显示屏52的底部,实时更新的文本流96被显示,它提供例如股票报价、最近的新闻标题、天气、交通情况、有关运动的比分等等。在图5C中,当前的广播视频信号98正被显示,同时,通过扬声器62,音频部分被再现。在图5D中,图5C的当前广播视频信号98被显示。代替被再现的音频部分,闭路字幕100被显示。
所述住宅网关使用一种最佳的方法以便根据所述输入设备以及网络48和手持控制器50的全部参数(例如,屏幕尺寸、分辨率、处理功率、电池寿命、可用的网络带宽、对于主题的用户优先权、时刻、位置、用于观看预览(例如,内容的可视表格)和全长视频的可用的时间),来确定最好的媒体再现(rendering)。这可以包括一种用于不同参数的加权方案,其中用户优先权的优先选择具有比其它参数更高的加权。
应当理解,在直接控制住宅网关系统的操作的传统意义上,手持控制器50可以被使用。所以,通过操作键盘58上的适当的按钮,显示屏52随后可以显示代表被连接到住宅网关10的全部部件的图标(见图6A)。为了方便,图6A按照预先准备好的在图1中所示的通过总线12被连接到住宅网关10的部件14-41的参考数字显示图标。例如,如果用户通过触摸图标32’选择数字录像机32,则在显示屏52上一个新的画面被显示。如在图6B所示,全部被存储的视频节目的列表和摘要按照单独的图标102、104、106、108和110被显示。一旦节目被选择,则用户随后可以令被选择的视频节目显示在电视接收机14上或者手持控制器50的显示屏52上,其中代码转换器68将被存储的视频信号代码转换成显示屏52的带宽,并且住宅网关10使用收发信机46把被代码转换的视频信号发送到手持控制器50。
手持控制器50能够利用在例如数字录像机32上的全部节目以及在PC 41上的电影/页面的视听摘要来获得一个概观。这些摘要可以通过输入设备本身(数字录像机32或者PC 41)或者通过处理器64被产生。手持控制器50的用户随后可以使用这些视听摘要来决定观看、删除以及记录什么。另外,如果对于节目(例如,在伴随所示视频信号或者从有关的互联网站被接入的元数据中),内容的可视表格是可用的,则用户能够识别应该被删除的节目的子段(场景),以及哪些部分应该被保持在设备上。这个特点也可以被用于根据视图的父母的控制观点来“封锁”某些节目以及节目的子段。这样,父母能够预先确定哪些可视场景应该被删除,随后编辑适合于在家庭中一般观看的电影。这是方便的,因为手持控制器的观看区域相对较小并且专用。父母随后能够在手持控制器50上观看具有被删除的场景的电影。另外,用户能够根据在内容的可视表格中被标记的场景决定将某些部分突出、标书签或者用电子邮件传送到其它用户。
在此被公开的结构的大量的代替和修改将呈现给本领域的技术人员。然而,应当理解,上面描述的实施方案只是为了说明目的而不是作为对本发明的限制。不违背本发明精神的全部这种修改将被包括在附加权利要求书中。

Claims (13)

1.一种住宅网关系统,包括:
用于从不同的源接收广播视频信号的装置(18、20、28、42);
用于显示视频信号的装置(14);
耦合到所述接收装置(18、20、28、42)用于选择性地在所述显示装置(14)上显示视频信号的住宅网关(10);
一个具有显示屏(52)的手持控制器(50),所述手持控制器(50)通过网络信道(48)耦合到所述住宅网关(10),用于与所述住宅网关(10)通信并且控制所述住宅网关(10),其中所述住宅网关(10)包括:
用于存储所述手持控制器(50)和所述网络信道(48)的属性的装置(44、66);以及
代码转换装置(68),用于响应于所述被存储的属性而代码转换视频信号,以便在所述网络信道(48)上传输到所述手持控制器(50),所述被代码转换的视频信号能够被所述网络信道(48)处理,并且在不经过所述手持控制器(50)进一步处理的情况下能够在所述手持控制器(50)的显示屏(52)上被显示。
2.如权利要求1中所述的住宅网关系统,其中,所述网络信道(48)和所述手持控制器(50)的所述属性包括所述网络信道(48)和显示屏(52)的带宽性能,其中包括显示屏(52)的分辨率和刷新速率、屏幕尺寸、处理能力、以及电池寿命,并且代码转换装置(68)代码转换视频信号以便至少与显示屏(52)的带宽一致。
3.如权利要求2中所述的住宅网关系统,其中,所述住宅网关系统还包括用于存储视频信号并且用于重放被存储的视频信号的装置(22、30、32、41),并且所述代码转换装置(68)能够通过执行视频内容分析来代码转换被存储的视频信号。
4.如权利要求3中所述的住宅网关系统,其中,所述视频内容分析可替代地包括提供被存储的视频信号的一系列静止图像和一个文本摘要,并且提供一系列有关的视频剪辑和音频剪辑。
5.如权利要求3中所述住宅网关系统,其中,所述住宅网关系统还包括用于接收新闻、天气、交通和其它生活信息的装置(18、20、28、42),并且所述代码转换装置(68)能够以文本流的形式代码转换所述生活信息以便传输到所述手持控制器。
6.如权利要求4中所述的住宅网关系统,其中,所述手持控制器(50)还包括用于存储关于所述手持控制器(50)的多个用户的简档信息的存储器(60),所述简档信息包括被选择的用户想要哪个代码转换过程的准则。
7.如权利要求5中所述住宅网关系统,其中,所述手持控制器(50)还包括用于存储关于所述手持控制器(50)的多个用户的简档信息的存储器(60),所述简档信息包括被选择的用户想要哪个代码转换过程的准则,并且其中所述住宅网关(10)包括根据在所述用户简档中的优先权设置而将所述被代码转换的文本流自主地提供给所述手持控制器(50)的装置。
8.如权利要求6中所述的住宅网关系统,其中,所述简档信息包括对于主题的用户优先权、时刻、位置、观看预览和全长视频的可用的时间,在一个连同所述用户优先权一起用于确定要被代码转换装置(68)执行的代码转换过程的加权方案中,所述住宅网关(10)使用网络信道(48)和手持控制器(50)的属性以及视频信号属性,其中所述用户优先权是最高加权的。
9.如权利要求3中所述的住宅网关系统,其中,住宅网关(10)提供在视频信号存储和重放装置(22、30、32、41)上被存储的视频信号的视听摘要,所述视听摘要包括代表在视频信号中的场景的图像。
10.如权利要求3中所述的住宅网关系统,其中,住宅网关(10)为被视频信号记录和重放装置(22、30、32、41)存储的视频信号代表的每个节目提供一个内容表格,所述代码转换装置(68)代码转换所述内容表格用于所述手持控制器(50),所述手持控制器(50)显示所述内容表格,并且所述手持控制器(50)具有用于选择性地删除被选择的一个节目中的被选择的部分从而构成一个被编辑的节目的装置(56),所述被编辑的节目随后在所述显示装置(14)上被显示。
11.如权利要求10中所述的住宅网关系统,其中,所述内容表格和每个节目的视频信号一起被存储。
12.如权利要求10中所述的住宅网关系统,其中,所述内容表格通过住宅网关系统从互联网被获得。
13.如权利要求10中所述的住宅网关系统,其中,所述手持控制器(50)包括用于从在显示装置(14)或者在手持控制器(50)上正被观看的节目中封锁被选择的节目或者节目的一部分的封锁装置(56)。
