Abstract

Description

显示装置
本发明涉及显示装置,它包括:在基片上的选择电极和数据电极的矩阵,在选择电极和数据电极的交叉区域有像素;以及在基片上的至少一个开关元件和驱动装置,用来驱动选择电极和数据电极。
这类有源矩阵显示装置的例子有薄膜晶体管液晶显示器(TFT-LCD)或有源矩阵液晶显示器(AM-LCD),它们用在膝上型电脑或“组织者”(“organizers”)中,但也日益广泛地用于GSM电话机。替代LCD,可以使用(聚合体)发光二极管(LED)、电致变色显示器或其他显示装置。
许多便携式显示装置的一个问题是功率消耗。这个问题也会出现在反射式显示装置(其中没有背景光的功率消耗)中。
这类便携式应用中,液晶显示器所需的驱动电压由一个或多个驱动集成电路提供,后者通常确定显示装置功率消耗的一大部分。
本发明的一个目的是提供一种在开头一节中描述过的类型的显示装置,所述显示装置具有较低功率消耗、使得这类显示装置在单一电池供电时能用更长的时间。
本发明的显示装置的第一实施例具有以下特征:所述显示装置包括用于降低一部分选择电极组或数据电极组相对于其他选择电极或数据电极部分的电容的装置。
本发明的显示装置的第二实施例具有以下特征:所述显示装置包括用于临时降低至少一部分选择电极组或数据电极组的电容的装置。
本发明基于这样的认识,即驱动集成电路中功率消耗的大部分是对列电极杂散电容充放电、例如在交叉区域以及(程度要低一点)对行电极杂散电容充放电的结果。通过减少一部分这些电极的杂散电容,例如,处于备用模式下的电极的杂散电容,可以显著减少功率消耗,特别在所述备用模式下可获明显效果。
所述电容减少可以是永久的,例如,在一部分数据电极组比其他数据电极较短时;或者可以是临时的,例如,因为数据电极包括许多可以通过开关元件互连的子电极(sub-electrodes)。
参考下文将要描述的实施例,本发明的这些及其他方面将得到阐述,使其显而易见。

所述附图是概略性的,不是按比例画的。对应的元件一般用相同的标号表示。
图1显示应用本发明的显示装置1的电气等效图。它包括显示板13,该板在m行或选择电极5和n列或数据电极6的交叉区域有像素8构成的矩阵。行电极通过行驱动器9持续地被选择,同时,列电极或者通过数据寄存器或者通过列驱动器10而备有数据。如果必要,输入的数据信号2首先经处理器3处理。通过驱动线7实现彼此间同步。
在本例中,像素8构成液晶显示器的部分。在传统的有源矩阵TFT技术中,与像素相关的TFT晶体管(图1中未示出)通过栅电极上的选择脉冲激活,同时连接到TFT晶体管的源电极的数据电极上的电压决定连接到漏电极的图像电极上的电压。
当使用这种显示装置时,与像素相关的电容(像素电容)与待显示的信息一致地被充电。为此目的,通常在每一个选择周期新信息被送给列电极,这样和列电极有关的杂散电容就连续地充电或放电。所述杂散电容形成于,比如说,具有作为电介质插入其中的电绝缘层的行电极和列电极的交叉区域。一大部分能量于是被使用,常常超过对像素电容的充电。这能量消耗在实际的显示板13以及驱动器9、10上。值得注意的是,在移动装置中,特别是在电信应用中,这种能量也用在只有一小部分显示板被实际使用的备用模式。
在图1的例子中,信息在备用模式下显示在显示板的分区12上。使分区12上的列电极6″具有比实际显示部分的列电极6较短的长度,防止能量消耗在显示板13(以及与寄存器10相关的驱动电极)的其他部分。这个例子中,列电极6″由分开的列驱动器11驱动,并且与列电极6′对齐,这样显示板实际上被分离成两部分。备用部分12的列电极往往短,这样可以为此目的使用较细的电极而不损失任何速度,因此这部分的上述杂散电容小,于是进一步减小了能量损失。在备用模式下显示板的其他部分没有激活,比如,不加电压或加小电压。
当使用全显示板时,分区12和显示板的其他部分被激活。通过使用分开的备用模式,如本例中,可优化出低功耗,同时为了最好的显示性能而优化列驱动器10。再次通过驱动线7和驱动电路3进行备用模式下的相互同步与调节。
但是,也可以在列驱动器10中继续列驱动器11的功能。这显示在图2中,其中,对于备用部分12,除了许多选择电极5之外,实现子电极5”,同样地,对于备用部分12,紧挨着列电极6实现子电极6”。
行驱动器9在备用模式下选择较短(较细)的子电极5″,在显示模式下选择电极5,并同步地把信息(备用或当前信息)分别提供给电极6″和6。所述驱动过程是这样的:或者选择备用模式下的子像素或者选择信息显示。分开的开关或p与n MOS晶体管的组合可用于此目的。
图3示出一种变型,其中在备用模式下,在列电极6之间为备用部分12实现较短电极14。较短电极14有比实际列电极较小的杂散电容,这样可以再次使备用模式下的消耗很小。当在备用时断开实际选择电极和列电极的驱动部分时,可明显获得这种效果。其他标号与前述例子中的意义相同。
额外的、较短的电极增加了列驱动器11的输出端的数量,特别是在彩色显示装置中。而且,现在在备用部分12中有额外的电极印刷线。这牺牲了显示模式下的分辨率。在图4的显示装置中,通过只给一种颜色的列电极附加较短的列电极印刷线,这种情况得到补偿,例子中的颜色是绿色,然而红和绿的组合也是可能的。这样,备用模式下的显示信息当然只有绿色。另一个解决办法示于图5的显示装置中,其中较短的列电极线14R、14G、14B彼此之间短路,由连接到列驱动器10的公共连接线15驱动。现在备用模式下的信息显示成黑、白,以及,如果必要,灰色。两个例子中,备用模式下的附加输出端的数目减少2/3。
一种完全不同的解决方法示于图6。现在列电极6分裂成通过开关可以内部互连的子列电极,在本实施例中,所述开关是TFT晶体管,后者由附加的行电极16、16′选择。通过附加的行电极16、16′使晶体管进入导通状态,列电极的不同部分内部互连。当一个或多组被断开时,受驱动的列电极暂时有较低的杂散电容,也会使这种情况下备用模式下的能量消耗减少。图6的例子中,备用部分12是L形状,然而,随附加行电极16、16′和开关的数量而定,也可以选择其他形状。
类似于图4中的实例,为了较大间隙的原因,通过将它们分成仅仅一种颜色(本例仍取绿色)的列,可以减少开关(TFT晶体管)的数量。这样一种实施例示于图7。
本发明的保护范围不限于所述实施例。如开头一节中所述,另一种可供选择的方法是,像素可由(聚合体)LED形成,同时,本发明也适用于基于例如光电或机电效应的其他显示装置。
本发明在于所有新颖的性能特征和性能特征的所有组合。权利要求书中的标号并不限制它们的保护范围。权利要求书中动词“包括”及其变化的使用不排除出现那些陈述之外的元件或单元。元件或单元前的冠词“a”或“an”并不排除多个这类元件或单元的出现。

Claims (9)

1.一种显示装置(1),它包括:在基片上的选择电极(5)和数据电极(6)的矩阵,在所述选择电极和所述数据电极的交叉区域有像素;以及至少一个开关元件和驱动装置(3、9、10、11),用来驱动所述选择电极和所述数据电极;其特征在于:所述显示装置包括一些装置,用来减小一部分选择电极(5)组或数据电极(6)组相对于其他显示电极(5)或数据电极(6)的电容。
2.如权利要求1的显示装置,其特征在于:所述数据电极(6″)组的一部分有比其他数据电极较小的长度或宽度。
3.如权利要求2的显示装置,其特征在于:所述显示装置包括与具有较小长度或宽度的所述数据电极(6″)排列成直线的、具有比其他数据电极较小的长度或宽度的数据电极(6′)。
4.如权利要求1的显示装置,其特征在于:所述选择电极组的一部分有比其他选择电极较小的长度或宽度。
5.如权利要求1的彩色显示装置,其特征在于:所述显示装置包括仅一种颜色的像素的、有较短长度的数据电极。
6.如权利要求1的显示装置,其特征在于:所述驱动装置至少暂时提供驱动电压给具有减小的电容的电极组。
7.如权利要求1的彩色显示装置,其特征在于:所述驱动装置具有至少一根用于多个较短长度的数据电极的公共连接线。
8.一种显示装置(1),它包括:在基片上的选择电极(5)和数据电极(6)的矩阵,在所述选择电极和所述数据电极的交叉区域有像素;以及至少一个开关元件和驱动装置,用来驱动所述选择电极和数据电极;其特征在于:所述显示装置包括装置(16、17),用来暂时减小所述选择电极(5)组或所述数据电极(6)组的至少一部分的电容。
9.如权利要求8的显示装置,其特征在于:所述数据电极包括能够通过开关元件(17)内部互连的多个子数据电极。
