Abstract

Description
本发明涉及一种平板显示装置,该装置具有有维持电极和扫描电极的等离子体放电单元和驱动电路。本发明具体可应用于用于个人电脑、电视机等的AC等离子体显示板。
从US-A 5,661,500已知一种等离子体显示板。该已知等离子体显示板包括第一和第二基片,它们相互平行且面对以限定一个充满放电气体的空间,形成于第一基片上的显示电极线对面对第二个基片,每一显示电极线对彼此平行且组成一对表面放电的电极对,在显示电极和第一基片上的一个介质层,形成于第二基片上的地址电极线面对第一基片并在与显示电极线交叉的方向上延伸,三种荧光层,其相应的发光颜色彼此不同并沿显示和壁垒的延伸线按所述三种发光颜色的依次按顺序形成于第二基片上,在第二基片上把所述放电空间分开并隔离成对应于相应荧光层的单元,其中所述三种发光颜色的相邻的三种荧光层和一对显示电极线对定义全色显示器的一个图像元素。在一个等离子体显示板上,矩阵的每一行因此由两个线电极定义:一个扫描电极和一个维持电极。一个行电极和一个数据电极的交叉点定义一个单元。
为了在这样的显示器上显示图像,对每一子帧需要相继应用三种驱动模式:
·擦除模式,在该模式中,单元中的旧数据被擦除,使下一(子)帧能被装入。
·扫描模式,在该模式中,将显示的(子)帧的数据被写到单元中。
·维持模式,在该模式中,产生光(并从而产生图像),所有的单元被同时维持。
为了选择扫描电极之一和一个相应的维持电极,维持电极可以连接于公共接地,并且扫描电极可以连接于扫描电极驱动电路。假设一个等离子体显示板有M行像素,给显示板的扫描电极提供驱动脉冲的3M个扫描电极驱动电路是必须的。这样的板有3M个连接用于给扫描电极提供驱动脉冲。进一步,数据电极连接于N个数据驱动器。数据驱动器给数据电极提供数据脉冲。因为一个像素包括用于相应的三种颜色的三个单元,一个用于显示例如,一个宽VGA图像的等离子体显示板包括2556(3×852)个数据驱动器和480个扫描电极驱动器。
该已知显示器件有一个缺陷,需要相对大量的连接以将数据信号提供给列和将驱动脉冲供给扫描电极。
本发明的目的是提供一种显示器件,其中板的连接总数被减少。借助按本权利要求1中所定义的本发明的显示器件可以实现这个目的。本发明基于这样的认识,实践中,等离子体显示板每行包括比行的总数更多数目的像素。通过以这样的方式换位(transposing)显示器可以减少连接的总数,即维持和扫描电极现在构成列同时先前的数据电极现在构成行。扫描和维持电极现在选择单元的一列而不是单元的一行。如果待显示的视频信息包括行帧,为了换位视频信息就需要一个视频换位电路。如果一个计算机视频卡产生视频信息,这个计算机视频卡必须安排用于换位视频信息。
当扫描电极驱动器集成电路的面积小于数据驱动器集成电路面积的三分之一时,进一步的优势可以获得。在这种情况下,可以获得数据驱动器和扫描驱动器二者的集成电路的总面积的减少。该减少可在下面实例中阐明。
例如,如果该已知等离子体显示板有480行和2556列,数据驱动器的总数是2556,扫描电极驱动电路的总数为480。依照本发明的相应的等离子体显示板有1440(3×480)数据驱动电路和852个扫描电极驱动电路。这样,数据驱动器的数量和显示器的总的连接数减少了。例如如果一个扫描电极驱动电路的每一个连接可以在0.75mm2实现,而一个数据驱动电路的每一个连接可以在0.45mm2实现,那么已知的等离子体显示板的数据驱动电路的总面积为3×852×0.45=1150mm2而扫描电极驱动电路的总面积为480×0.75mm2=360mm2。对于相应的具有换位扫描的等离子体显示板,数据驱动电路的总面积为3×480×0.45=648mm2,和驱动扫描电极的扫描电极驱动电路的总面积为852×0.75mm2=639mm2。驱动电路面积的总的减少量现在为223mm2,这将导致等离子体显示板制做成本的减少。

依照本发明的等离子体显示板的一个具体的实施方案定义在权利要求2中。这个实施方案允许一个图像的不同像素显示不同的亮度级别。在这个等离子体显示板中,一个场可以包括许多子场。每一个子场包括一个擦除周期、一个用于起动在维持周期内应发光的单元的地址周期和一个其间实际发射光的维持周期。每一个子场的维持周期是给定的,例如对应6比特信号的加权为32,16,8,4,2或1。这种子场编码见于EP 0 890 941。
依照本发明的等离子体显示板的另一实施方案定义于权利要求3中。这个实施方案允许显示8比特视频信息。通常,单元的寻址需要例如3μs。在一个已知等离子体显示板中显示一个宽VGA图像,寻址时间Ta因此需要每个子场480×3μs=1.5ms。在依照本发明的相应等离子体显示板中,寻址时间为每个子场852×3μs=2.5ms,于是8比特视频信息的显示需要8×2.5=20ms,这和现有的VGA标准不兼容。因此,在此实施方案中,相邻列形成组,一些最低有效子场的相同亮度值得以显示。通过同时寻址更多的列,寻址时间得以减少,因此使256亮度值的产生成为可能。显示的值可以是像素的原始独立值的平均值。这种寻址方法见于未预公开的PHNL000025。

依照本发明的等离子体显示板的另一实施方案定义于权利要求5中。在这个实施方案中,峰值电流被及时展开,因为至少一组电极对维持等离子体放电相对于电极对组的至少一其它组的相位是移位的,因此相应的维持等离子体放电被及时移位。该峰值等离子体电流(和放电电流)在两个(或更多)放电时刻中被展开并且减少(如果相同组数有n个放电时刻则减少到原来的1/n)。这一点可用来减少维持电极驱动器的损耗或减少元件的数量(并从而减少成本)。损耗等于I2×R×t/T,其中I是电流,R是维持电路中元件的电阻,t/T是电流流过时间的比值。可以看出,n个峰值电流有1/n密度,损耗将降低到1/n。
优选地,m组维持电极和n组扫描电极形成n*m组电极对。这允许峰值电流在各组中更有效的分配。
优选地,放电期间相邻电极对中的电流是反相的。当放电是反相时,相邻单元和电极对中的电流沿相反方向流动。通过设置具有相对电流方向的列彼此相近,这些列的电磁辐射场在器件的一定距离处将彼此抵消。

定时信号发生器1进一步将固定顺序的加权系数Wf指定给每一个场周期Tf中的子场周期Sf。维持发生器5与定时信号发生器耦合以提供一定数目或一定频率的与加权系数Wf一致的维持脉冲Sp,使得预处理的单元C产生的一定量的光与加权系数Wf相对应。子场数据发生器4在显示信息Pi上执行操作,使得数据di与加权系数Wf相一致。
当考虑一个整个板时,现有技术的维持电极Sc与等离子体显示板的所有行互连。扫描电极Sc与行集成电路相连并在寻址或启动阶段期间被扫描。列电极Co由列Ics操作,等离子体单元C以三种模式工作:
1.擦除模式。在每一个子场被启动前,所有的等离子体单元C同时被擦除,这是通过首先驱动等离子体单元进入导通状态,然后移走建立在单元C上的全部电荷实现的。
2.启动模式(prime mode)。等离子体单元是正常状态的,使得在维持模式期间它们处于开或关状态。因为等离子体单元只能完全开或关,需要几个启动阶段以写亮度值的所有比特。等离子体单元C以一次一行为基础被选择,并且列电极Co上的电压值将决定单元的开/关状态。如果亮度值由6比特表示,则一个场中就定义了6个子场。
3.维持模式。一个交替的电压同时施加在所有行的扫描和维持电极Sc,Su上。列电压主要是在高电位。被启动将处于开状态的等离子体单元或像素C将亮起来。独立亮度比特的加权将决定维持期间的光脉冲的数目。
图3示出了已知的等离子体显示板的扫描电极Sc和维持电极Su之间的电压波形。因为有三种模式,相应的时间序列指示为Te,bx(比特x子场的擦除模式),Tp,bx(比特x子场的启动模式)和Ts,bx(比特x子场的维持模式)。
图4进一步说明一个已知的等离子体显示板Pa中单元C的布局。这些单元的结构与图1所示的单元结构一样并且形成一个显示区域。这些单元被排列为j行和k列,图4中的一个小框代表一个单元。扫描电极(Sci)和维持电极(Sui)沿行的方向延伸,扫描电极和相应的维持电极组成电极对。扫描/维持电极对与单元的相应行相关联。数据电极(Di)沿列的方向延伸并与单元的相应列相关联。
图5说明一个具有换位扫描装置的等离子体显示板Pb的单元C的布局。这些单元的结构与图1所示的单元结构一样。这些单元被排列为m行和n列,并且图5中一个小框代表一个单元。扫描电极(Sci)和维持电极(Sui)沿列的方向延伸,扫描电极和相应的维持电极组成电极对。在本实施方案中,扫描/维持电极对与单元的相应列相关联。数据电极沿行方向延伸并与单元的相应行相关联。为了在等离子体显示板上显示一个图像,每一列被单独寻址。数据驱动器必须适于将对应于一行的红、绿和蓝单元的数据信号逐一提供给数据电极。假定一个宽VGA图像包括每行3×852单元共480行,数据驱动器的数量为3×480,扫描电极驱动器的数量为852。这样,显示器的连接的数量减少了。
进一步,如果一个扫描电极驱动器集成电路所需面积小于一个数据驱动器集成电路所需面积的三分之一,则通过等离子体显示板的换位扫描装置便可实现集成电路所需总面积的节省。例如,如果一个扫描电极驱动电路可实现为每个连接0.75mm2,而数据驱动电路可实现为每个连接0.45mm2,则传统等离子体显示板的数据驱动电路总面积是3×852×0.45mm2=1150mm2,扫描电极驱动电路总面积为480×0.75mm2=360mm2。对于具有换位扫描装置的相应等离子体显示板,数据驱动电路的总面积变为3×480×0.45mm2=648mm2,驱动扫描电极的扫描电极驱动电路的总面积变为852×0.75mm2=639mm2。总面积变为1510mm2,驱动电路面积总减少量为223mm2,这可导致等离子体显示板制造成本的减少。
图6上半部分中示出了可用于具有换位扫描的等离子体显示板中的计时简图,其中每一个子场的寻址时间是一样的。应用行双倍的方法(Line Doubling Method)可以减少寻址时间Ta,n,该方法应用于一些最低有效子场。这示于图6的下半部分中。用相同数据对两个相邻列同时寻址可以减少最低有效子场的寻址时间Ta,s,并产生时间收益Tg,该时间收益用来增加子场的数量以改善显示器的灰度的数量。
图像质量的改善可以通过将相应偶数和奇数场的列分成不同的线组来实现。例如图7所示,对于奇数场列被分组为线对70,71,和通过移动一线,分组为偶数场的其它线对72,73。图像质量更进一步的改善可以通过向组中的线对的另一线而不是原始线中的一线复制线组的原始亮度值的平均值来实现。同样在帧的连续场中对列的不同分组改善图像质量并且减少寻址时间。
为了减少等离子体显示板连接数量和扫描驱动器的数量,维持电极以多个第一组互连,扫描电极以多个第二组互连,使得每一个第一组包括每一个第二组中的不超过一个的扫描电极。

为了改善等离子体显示板实施方案的电磁兼容性(EMC),维持电极被细分成n组,X1和X2(即n=2),扫描电极被细分成m组Y1和Y2(即m=2),见图9。四组(n*m)电极对是这样组成的:Y1和X1的第一组G1,Y2和X1的第二组G2,Y2和X2的第三组G3,Y1和X2的第四组G4。图10说明了在扫描电极组(Y1,Y2),维持电极组(X1,X2)上的维持脉冲,以及在电极Xi和Yi之间的脉冲。可以看到不同电极组上的所有脉冲彼此之间有相位移动并且是各组电极对上的所有脉冲。在维持电极组(X1-X2)上的维持脉冲反相,因为它们是用于扫描电极组(Y1-Y2)的。扫描和维持电极上的脉冲之间的相位差为π/2或它的倍数(例如,见组Y1-X1和Y1-X2脉冲相位差为1/4个周期,即π/2,组Y1-X1和Y2-X2的相位差为1/2个周期等等)。等离子体放电发生的时刻(每个周期4次)由星号指示。在两个不同时间在电极间发生等离子体放电。因此,峰值电流(不管它们是等离子体放电电流还是电容性电流,也不管它们是吸收或是源充电)在两个时刻间展开。这样可以用来减少维持电路的损耗或用来减少元件的数量(从而减少成本)。损耗等于I2*R*t/T,其中I是电流,R是电阻(维持电路中元件的电阻),t/T是电流流动时刻的比值。可以看到n个峰值电流有1/n亮度的,损耗降到1/n。
于是放电瞬间被及时等量地分配,减少了损耗和峰值电流。它们也可以在扫描和维持电极组中等量地分配。
图11示出一个等离子体显示板,其中在放电期间相邻的扫描和维持电极对中的电流是反相的。在这个实例中,在放电期间,相邻的扫描和维持电极对的电流是反相的。当放电是反相时,电流沿相反方向流动。大箭头指示等离子体放电电流。当沿水平线看时,可以看到相邻列中电流的流动方向是相反的。与电流相关联的电磁场因而也是相反方向的,其在离器件和在器件中一定距离处可彼此抵消。这减少这种场与其他电路的干扰。通过彼此相近放置具有相反电流方向的列,这些列的电磁辐射场于是在离器件和在器件中一定距离处彼此抵消。电极Y1,Y2,X1,X2上的电压见图11的左侧部分。
Claims (6)
1.一种平板显示装置,它具有形成排列在M行和N列的矩阵中的像素的等离子体放电单元,其中N大于M,显示装置包括
沿第一方向延伸的维持电极和扫描电极以及沿横向于第一方向的第二方向延伸的数据电极,一侧上的数据电极和另一侧上的维持和扫描电极之间的交叉点对应于等离子体放电单元,
与维持和扫描电极耦合的驱动电路,用于向维持和扫描电极提供驱动脉冲,以及
与数据电极耦合的数据驱动电路,用于响应视频信息向放电单元提供数据信号,其特征在于,数据电极被排列构成M行,维持和扫描电极被排列构成N列,数据驱动电路适于向选定像素的列提供数据信号。
2.权利要求1所述的平板显示装置,其特征在于,该平板显示装置包括寻址装置,寻址装置安排寻址与连续图像的帧或场相对应的相邻列的组中的列,所述图像的帧或场有原始亮度值数据,这些数据被编码在包括一组最高有效子场和一组最低有效子场的子场中,公共亮度值数据提供给所述列的组中一组的列。
3.权利要求2所述的平板显示装置,其特征在于,该寻址装置安排用于在相邻列的组中对于a)连续的帧或场和/或b)显示器的不同区域和/或c)不同的子场执行不同的寻址。
4.权利要求1所述的平板显示装置,其特征在于,维持电极在多个第一组中是互连的,扫描电极在多个第二组中是互连的,使得每一个第一组包括每一个第二组中的不超过一个的扫描电极。
5.权利要求1所述的平板显示装置,其特征在于,维持电极包括m组维持电极,扫描电极包括n组扫描电极,并形成多组的电极对,并且工作时,驱动电路施加维持脉冲给有相移的电极对的相应组,使得至少一组电极对与电极对组的至少另一组不同时地发生等离体放电。
6.权利要求5所述平板显示装置,其特征在于,在扫描电极组上的脉冲间的相移基本上是相等的量2π/m,和/或在维持电极组上的脉冲间的相移基本上是相等的量2π/n。
