Abstract
一种制造高带宽硅基多模光纤的方法,包括提供一非圆形的预制件和从中拉制出手性结构的光纤。在至少一部分压扁过程中通过将管状预制件内减压而得到非圆形的芯和覆层,以制成非圆形的预制件。还可以通过去掉部分预制件而形成。圆形的芯和非圆形的覆层。在后一情况下以较高的温度拉制光纤,以使覆层大体具有圆形形状,而芯具有非圆形形状。用适当方式在光纤上施加手性结构,例如在拉制过程中相对于预制件交替地顺时针和逆时针扭转光纤。
Description
本发明涉及到制造多模硅基光纤的方法和用这种方法制造的光纤。
多模(MM)硅基光纤是众所周知的。简而言之,这种光纤具有一被一覆层接触式环围的芯。芯的有效折射率比覆层的折射率大。芯的半径和芯的折射率以及覆层材料这样选择,以让光纤在一工作波长例如0.85或1.3μm上支撑两或两个以上(往往是数百个)导模。通常用LPνμ代表导模,其中的方位模数ν是一个大于或等于零的整数,而半径模数μ是一个等于或大于1的整数。LP01是基模,而所有其他模都是更高阶模。由一给定的MM光纤支撑的导模的总数N大约等于V2/2,其中V是光纤的标准频率参数(V-数)。
众所周知,具有适当缓变(graded)的芯折射率的MM光纤可具有的带宽比具有阶跃(step)折射率分布的类似的MM光纤要大得多。具体地说,普通的芯折射率分布可以表示成
式中的r是径向坐标,rcore是芯半径,nclad是与芯邻接的覆层的折射率,Δ是芯的中心和覆层之间的标准折射率差(用来校正不理想的折射率下降),而α是一个自由参数。如果α=2,分布就是一个抛物面。α和Δ的最佳选择主要取决于构成MM光纤中光学活性部分的材料的性质和具体的用途。α通常大约为2。
为了在多模光纤中平衡高阶模的渡越时间并且补偿中心下降,对产生高带宽的光纤折射率分布的开发已经作出了努力。例如可参见K.Okamoto等的,IEEE Trans.Microwave Theory andTechniques,Vol.MTT-25,No.3(March 1977),p.213和M.Geshiro等的,IEEE Trans.Microwave Theory and Techniques,Vol.MTT-26(2),1978,p.115。
对于早期的光纤,许多专利属于MM光纤中的模式耦合和/或增强这种模式耦合的方法。例如,美国专利US3,909,110公开了具有人为波动的芯折射率的阶跃折射率MM光纤波导。美国专利US3,912,478公开了在拉制光纤时通过将气流射向光纤而在光纤中形成几何形状的变化。美国专利US3,969,016公开了利用封装外壳的有选择变形来实现模式耦合。美国专利US3,980,459公开了在淀积芯材料的过程中在预制件内插入一个玻璃棒,使光纤具有纵向偏心的折射率多相性。美国专利US3,982,916公开了一种预制件制造方法,它包含不对称加热以产生在圆周上交替淀积的掺杂和无掺杂玻璃,从而使光纤具有纵向偏心的方位折射率多相性。
美国专利US4,017,288公开了一种生产光纤的技术,光纤的折射率沿纵向有变化。美国专利US4,028,081公开了一种被松散地限制在一个保护壳内的螺旋形光纤。美国专利US4,038,062公开了一种MM光纤,利用一或多个受到调制的热源来增进模式耦合,从而减少模式分散。美国专利US4,049,413公开了一种制造光纤的方法,改变芯的直径,但是总体直径不变。该方法包括在预制件中蚀刻出槽。美国专利US4,093,343公开了一种能够减少各种模式之间的耦合的光纤,在光纤中具有纵向变化的波动。美国专利US4,176,911公开了一种具有缓变的折射率分布区域随后是急剧下降、然后是一个恒定折射率区域的MM光纤。按照预定的间隔改变光纤,使其具有一般的缓变的折射率分布。
由S.E.Golowich等人发明并且于1999年6月7日提交的同属于本申请人的美国专利申请09/326,960号“Multi-Mode OpticalFiber Having Improved Refractive Index Profile and DeviceComprising Same”公开了一种MM光纤,它的折射率分布与普通的α型分布至少有以下的一种区别ⅰ)在芯/覆层的边界上形成折射率分布的阶跃,配合有线性校正;ⅱ)芯/覆层边界附近的波动与线性校正相组合,有或没有折射率阶跃;ⅲ)在折射率分布中形成一具有中心下降的环形脊。
因此,现有技术可以提供具有明显的模式耦合从而获得高带宽的MM光纤。然而,仍然需要一种能够增加带宽的技术,并且需要增加能够制造的光纤的平均带宽范围,而且应该便于在现今采用的光纤制造方法中应用。本申请就涉及这样的技术。本文参考了此处引用的所有资料。
根据MM光纤的理论,如果存在一种在一给定的模组内部彻底混合所有的模并且还能彻底混合所有模组的机制,就能够实现高带宽,而不需要对芯折射率仔细地分级。例如可参见R.Olshansky,Applied Optics,Vol.14(4),April 1975,p.935。一个模组中的所有模都具有相同的传播常数β,而且不同的模组具有不同的传播常数。
上述理论预测已经在塑料MM光纤中得到了验证,从光纤上测得的高带宽例如可达到~5GHz.km,具有芯折射率的非最佳分级。
应当知道,塑料光纤本身就存在严重的模式混合。另一方面,对硅基MM光纤的测量表明在普通的硅基光纤的模组内部和模组之间发生的混合比较少。
“手性(chirality)”和有关的术语诸如“手性结构(chiralstructure)”在本文中代表一般的意思,分别是指“螺旋性(handedness)”和“螺旋结构(handed structure)”。
本文中的“预制件”是指压扁之前的预制的管以及压扁之后的成形或不成形的预制棒。从下文中可以清楚这些术语的意思。
概括地讲,本发明体现为一种制造硅基MM光纤的方法,使光纤具有典型值大于100MHz.km的高带宽。
具体地说,本发明体现为一种制造硅基MM光纤的方法,该光纤具有一个芯和一接触式环围该芯的覆层,这种芯具有沿径向变化的折射率。该方法包括提供一个硅基的光纤预制件,并且从该预制件拉制出光纤。重要的是至少一部分预制件具有非圆形的截面,并且拉制步骤中包括从该预制件拉制出光纤,以让拉出的光纤具有手性结构。手性结构往往具有有关的重复长度或周期。典型的重复长度为10cm或者更小,并且沿光纤的长度有所改变。
在一个最佳实施例中,在管内维持一降低的压力的同时,通过压扁管状的预制件而形成具有非圆形芯的非圆形预制棒。在另一个实施例中,非圆形的芯是这样形成的,有选择地从预制棒的外侧去掉玻璃(例如通过研磨或等离子蚀刻),然后在比较高温度下拉制光纤,以让拉出的光纤具有大致呈圆形的截面,但是有一个非圆形的芯。
在任何一种情况下都要通过相对于预制件扭转光纤,或者通过相对于光纤扭转预制件,以在拉制过程中将一种手性结构引入光纤中。在一个优选实施例中,基本上是按照美国专利US5,298,047所公开的方式相对于预制件交替地顺时针和逆时针扭转光纤。
在非圆形芯的存在和优选在光纤拉制期间引入的手性的共同作用下,通常会形成明显的模式耦合,因而使光纤具有高带宽,并且降低带宽对折射率分布细节的敏感性。在本发明的另一个实施例中,折射率分布不同于常规的抛物面或近抛物面分布,而是通过组合了非圆形芯和强加的手性来选择的,增强了模式混合,因而也就获得了高带宽。例如是采用上文引用的09/326,960号美国专利申请中所公开的折射率分布。利用过量模式发射或限量模式发射或者二者的组合就可以实现带宽的增加。
本发明还体现为一种产品,它包括具有非圆形截面和手性的一种硅基MM光纤,足以实现在MM光纤一给定的模组内的模与模之间和模组之间的模式耦合,使该MM光纤具有大的带宽。这种产品例如是一光纤通信系统,例如是一光纤局域网(LAN)。

图1表示一例具有α-型芯折射率的MM光纤折射率分布图。在图1中,n是折射率,r是径向坐标,11是芯折射率n(r),12是覆层折射率n覆层,13是芯/覆层界面。典型的硅基光纤被一个聚合物覆层接触式地包围。这种覆层对于本发明没有作用,因而不再进一步讨论。
应当知道,在常规的MM传输光纤所具有的结构中,光纤的方位和纵向坐标基本上是独立的,方位和/或纵向稳定性的任何偏差都是不可取的制造缺陷。然而,已知有一种具有可变的纵向结构的光纤,随着光纤的方位变化而变化。前一个例子例如可参见美国专利US5,298,047,其中提出在光纤中引入永久的螺旋,用来减少偏振模扩散。后一个例子可参见D.N.Payne等人在IEEE Journal ofQuantum Electronics,Vol.QE-18(4),April 1982,p.477上提出的偏振维持光纤。
这两种类型的光纤一般都是单模光纤。
本发明的方法的一个重要特征在于在该MM光纤中引入了扰动,以使光纤在工作中也就是在工作波长为λ的电磁辐射的传输过程中发生明显的模式混合。理想的模式混合包括混合一给定模组内的模,以及模组的混合。例如,芯的直径波动作为纵向坐标的函数趋于产生模组内部的模式耦合,而光纤内的微小弯曲趋于产生模组之间的模式耦合。关于MM光纤中的模式耦合问题的讨论例如可以参见R.Olshansky,Reviews of Modern Physics,Vol.51(2),pp.341-367(1979)。
图2示意表示现有技术的MM预制件或是光纤,编号21-25分别代表芯,覆层,径向坐标,方位坐标和纵向坐标。
在硅基MM光纤中通过模式混合而实现高带宽的目的,可以按照任何适当的方法通过在光纤中引入适当的扰动来实现。然而,对MM光纤采用模式耦合扰动的许多已知技术在制造环境下是难以实施的,和/或难以和目前采用的光纤制造工艺相结合。因而就需要有一种在MM光纤中引入扰动的方法,这种方法应该能够在制造环境下实施,并且易于和制造MM光纤的常规工艺相结合,本发明就是这样一种方法。
引入扰动的适当方法有a)在预制管内部维持减压(例如0.1大气压或以下)的同时将预制件压扁,以让压扁的预制件具有非圆形的截面,然后在从预制件拉制的过程中在光纤上形成手性;b)从常规预制棒的外围去掉玻璃,以让整形后的预制件具有非圆形(例如多边形)截面。然后从整形的预制件拉制光纤,且让拉丝温度足够高,以使光纤的外侧大致变成圆形而芯变成非圆形。在从预制件拉制光纤的过程中在光纤上形成手性。
图3示意性地表示压扁的非圆形光纤预制件(或是从压扁的预制件拉出的光纤),数字31和32代表芯材料和覆层材料。该预制件通常是采用MCVD按照常规方式制造的。在淀积芯材料(并且往往有一些覆层材料)之后,将圆形截面的管状预制件压扁成一个固体玻璃棒。在压扁过程中对状态进行选择,以让至少一部分管状体具有非圆形形状。这通常是通过在至少一部分压扁过程中维持管状预制件内部的减压来实现的。在完成压扁之后将所得的玻璃体安装在一个拉丝塔内拉制光纤。相对于预制件扭转光纤,或者相对于光纤扭转预制件,以使所得的光纤具有手性结构,主要是沿着光纤纵轴的方位和径向扰动。
制造具有非圆形芯截面的MM光纤的另一实施例的技术,包括制作一个常规的MM预制件并且用常规的方法压扁该预制件。然后将所得的圆形对称玻璃棒整形,以使该棒不再具有对称的圆形。例如可通过研磨或是利用等离子炬将棒整形成具有多边形(例如六边形)截面,或者是具有准椭圆形截面。图4A示意性地表示具有准椭圆形截面的一部分预制件,数字41和42分别表示(圆形对称的)芯和覆层。
在完成整形之后将整形的预制件安装在一个拉丝塔内拉制光纤。加热区的温度通常选择在比较高(例如在2100-2400℃的范围),以让光纤的外侧(由于表面张力)大体上形成圆形,而芯则变成非圆形。如图4B所示,数字411和422分别表示非圆形的芯和大体呈圆形的覆层。不仅是用较高的温度拉制光纤,而且在光纤拉丝期间还要在光纤上形成手性结构。为此需要相对于预制件扭转光纤,或者是相对于光纤扭转预制件。使所得的光纤通常具有沿着光纤纵坐标的方位和径向扰动。
在光纤上施加手性可以通过任何适当的方式实现。例如可以让拉丝炉中的预制件绕着其轴线旋转。例如可参见美国专利US4,504,300。在本实施例中是交替地顺时针和逆时针扭转光纤。参见美国专利US5,298,047,其中揭示了一种拉丝塔,可以利用一个振荡导向轮交替地顺时针和逆时针扭转光纤。交替扭转调整重复长度往往能够促进模式混合。
在一高速光纤通信系统例如LAN中使用按照本发明的MM光纤是有益的。图5示意性地表示了一例光纤通信系统50,系统中包括一个发射机51、一个接收机52和连接着发射机和接收机用于信号传输的MM光纤53。
实例
制成一个常规的管状单模预制件并且在压扁之前分割成两件。按照常规方式将两件中的一件压扁,另一件在真空中压扁。用两件压扁的预制件各自拉出一定长度的没有扭转的光纤和同样长度的被扭转的光纤。然后对各长300m的两种光纤执行差动模式延迟测量。真空压扁并接着拉丝的光纤的芯椭圆度是13.9%,而没有真空压扁的芯椭圆度是4.6%。拉丝速度和扭转被选择在30转/m。
图6-9分别表示没有真空压扁并且没有扭转的光纤,没有真空压扁但是有扭转的光纤,有真空压扁但是没有扭转的光纤,以及有真空压扁并且有扭转的光纤。
图中表示了在发射脉冲的各种偏移状态下的脉冲幅值作为时间的函数。每个图中表示了9种偏移(从下到上是0,±5μm,±10μm,±15μm,±20μm)下的脉冲幅值。为了便于定量的说明而不需要考虑脉冲所对应的正、负偏移。检查图6-9表明图9的脉冲(真空压扁,在拉丝期间扭转)与其他图中的脉冲相比之下的脉冲宽度明显地小,说明真空压扁和扭转的MM光纤具有较大的带宽。并且图9的脉冲明显地比图6-8的脉冲结构要小,表明带宽比较高。另外,图9的相对结构自由的零偏移脉冲表明常见的中心折射率下陷被减少了。
图10-13表示脉冲中心差模扩散(分别用数字101,111,121,131表示)和脉冲宽度(分别用102,112,122和132表示)的对应数据作为横向偏移的函数。右侧的坐标(用ps)表示脉冲宽度数据,而左侧的坐标(用ps/m)表示脉冲中心相对延迟。
检查图10-13表明真空压扁的扭转光纤(图13)的脉冲宽度比其他光纤要小,并且差模扩散也小,表明真空压扁和扭转的光纤带宽比较大。
在本发明的另一个实施例中是这样制作预制件的,让芯具有圆形的外围,但是从圆周到芯的中心从零开始成椭圆形逐渐增大折射率分布。如图14所示,数字140和141分别代表覆层和芯的圆周,而数字142-144代表折射率等值线。按照图14的预制件是这样制作的,让至少一部分预制件具有非圆形形态。图14还可以说明从预制件拉出的光纤的芯具有非圆形的截面。
规定的品质因数(FOM)如下:考虑在300m长的MM光纤上测得的所有脉冲。统计最高功率点一半的脉冲前沿和后沿的到达时间。计算前沿的最早到达时间和后沿的最迟到达时间之间的最大时间差。用Tmax代表这一参数。然后将FOM限定为FOM=Tmax/P,其中的P=2/3倍比特周期。在本例中,P=67ps。
FOM=1表明脉冲的总跨度处在2/3比特周期内,而FOM=10表明脉冲的总跨度是比特周期宽度的10倍。小的FOM通常配合着大的带宽。
确定上述四种MM光纤的FOM,从中可以发现,从没有真空压扁/没有扭转(FOM=7.0)到没有真空压扁/有扭转(FOM=5.4)到真空压扁/没有扭转(FOM=4.8)到真空压扁/扭转(FOM=2.7)是递减的。
需要指出的是,上述的过程和结果都只是一些例子,本发明的实现并不需要用同样的管状预制件制成各种类型的光纤。
Claims (8)
1. 制造多模硅基光纤的方法,这种光纤具有一芯和一接触式环绕该芯的覆层,这种芯具有沿径向变化的折射率;该方法包括
a)提供一硅基光纤预制件;并且
b)从该预制件拉制出光纤;
其特征是
c)步骤a)包括将预制件的至少一部分整形成非圆形;以及
d)步骤b)包括从至少一部分预制件拉制出光纤,以让光纤的芯具有非圆形截面,并且在该光纤上旋加以手性结构,从而使此多模光纤具有高的带宽。
2. 按照权利要求1的方法,其特征是对预制件整形包括在预制件压扁的至少一部分时间内在预制件内部施加降低的压力,以使压扁的预制件中的至少一部分芯变成非圆形。
3. 按照权利要求1的方法,其特征是对预制件整形包括从压扁的预制件的外侧去掉材料,以让压扁的预制件具有圆形的芯和非圆形的覆层。
4. 按照权利要求2的方法,其特征是对预制件整形包括从压扁的预制件的外侧去掉材料,以让压扁的预制件具有圆形的芯和非圆形的覆层。
5. 按照权利要求1的方法,其特征是在光纤上施加手性结构的步骤包括在从预制件拉制光纤的同时交替地顺时针和逆时针扭转光纤。
6. 按照权利要求1的方法,其特征在于一与手性结构有关的重复长度,上述重复长度为10cm或者更小。
7. 包括一定长度的硅基多模光纤的一种产品,该光纤包括一芯和一接触式环绕该芯的覆层;
其特征在于
至少一部分上述的芯具有非圆形截面,并且上述光纤具有一种重复长度为10cm或更小的手性结构。
8. 按照权利要求7的产品,其特征在于该产品是一光纤通信系统,该系统包括一发射机、一接收机和连接上述发射机和接收机的用于信号传输的硅基多模光纤。
