本发明涉及一种家庭娱乐系统及其操作方法，更具体地涉及家庭娱乐系统中为促进未来电视节目的收视而使用的电子节目导视(EPG)功能。
于1990年12月11日授权的美国专利号4，977，455公开了一种用于在用户响应于提示之后提供补充信息的系统和过程。该提示在广播期间被提供以便标示与广播相关的补充信息的可用性。最好稍后再发送补充信息，而该补充信息的安排信息则与广播一起发送。在用户响应于提示之后，首先存储安排信息，然后使用它记录补充信息。在一个实施例中，在视频信号的VBI中发送补充数据。

在本发明的具体实施例中，在电视广播一个关于稍后电视节目的预告或宣传画面或电视广播某些其他类型的可视或音频信号期间，在电视屏幕上显示的一个图标提醒观众可以完成一个电子节目导视(EPG)功能而不必实际上进入EPG或至少在开始时不进入EPG。
例如，如果观众希望在VCR上记录现正作宣传的节目，则该观众从一个远程控制器发出一个合适的命令，例如使用远程控制器上的选择或输入键在图标上单击，而作宣传的节目的时间和频道号存储于VCR的记录栈存储区内。优选地在屏幕上的一个方框内暂时显示一条消息，用于证实将要完成该功能。如果需要，也可显示一条询问，询问观众希望显示一次还是多次，例如每日或每周。

观众通过例如将光标移动至菜单项目而选择一个功能，然后发出另一条命令以调用所选功能。例如，观众能够增亮“3”并单击以显示关于作宣传的节目的细节。
如果观众希望取消方框50，则观众可以选择返回功能“8”。
也能提供其他未在图3中列出的功能。例如，可在屏幕上显示作宣传节目的全部电视广播时间或者在屏幕上显示与作宣传节目相关的新闻故事，特别是在运动事件的情况下。

当选择记录功能时，如图4中所述，在宣传画面50上覆盖一个方框56以便提示观众选择一个记录功能。在方框56内显示一个记录选项菜单。(作为此处所用名词，这些记录选项也考虑为EPG功能，因为它们是正常时可由EPG完成的功能。)观众能够如下地记录作宣传节目：
1．一次；
2．每日；
3．每周；或
4．每当系列中的节目作电视广播时(例如NBA冠军赛)。
观众通过例如将光标移至一个菜单项目例如“3”并且单击而选择一个记录选项，以便每周记录作宣传的节目。
作为附加特征，如果选择图4中的系列功能，可以显示系列中每一集的列表；当选择某一具体集时，即显示该集的简介。观众可根据该简介选择系列中个别集以便安排观看或记录。
图3和4中所示菜单可以与EPG数据库一起存于存储器22中，并且可以利用图1中未示出的视频开关或其他装置覆盖于宣传图象之上。
如果选择细节功能，则细节(节目描述)信息可从被宣传的未来节目的SIP中检索出来并且显示于TV 20的屏幕上。
如果选择时间、频道或主题功能，则可从调谐器11中读取频道及从微处理器24中的实时时钟内读取时间。根据这些信息，从预先建立的时间表中检索所需SIP或多个SIP的一个或多个指针。检索的一个或多个指针允许微处理器24寻找所需SIP或多个SIP，根据以上信息可以提取与作宣传节目相同的时间、频道或主题的节目表，并将它们传送至视频处理器30以便使用与参考的PCT应用中所描述的普通导视的显示数据相同的方式在监视器屏幕上显示它们。
选代地，如果选择时间或频道功能，则可以显示格网导视(参考美国申请号09／120，488)中的时间和频道，以使观众能够用格网导视格式观看相同频道上或相同时间内可用的其他节目。在此情况下，通过使用导视本身的安排能力，可以直接安排作宣传节目或在大约相同时间内或在相同频道上进行电视广播的节目以供记录或观看。(见美国专利号5，353，121，其公开内容包括于此处以供参考。)
如果选择因特网功能，则系统设置连至一个网站的连接，在该网站上可以使用更多的关于预告的或作宣传的其他电视节目的信息。网站地址(URL)可以埋嵌于携带该预告的电视信号的VBI内，它存于电视接收机中的作为当今电视节目的SIP的一部分的EPG数据库中，也可通过电话线从中央数据库中检索到。在建立因特网连接之后，如图5中所示，在PIP视窗58中显示电视节目，其背景60中显示网站信息，或者反之亦然。选代地，网站信息可以替代屏幕上的电视节目。在这两者中的任何一个情况下，观众能够以正常方式在网站中漫游以便寻找所需信息。
图标52可以不在预告或宣传期间出现而在电视节目本身期间出现。当观众响应于图标52而发出命令时，在屏幕上显示一个方框62。在方框62内出现稍后电视广播的节目的预告或宣传画面。如果观众对稍后电视节目感兴趣，则观众从输入设备28发出另一条命令，方框54(图3)即如上所述地显示。
可以不用稍后电视节目的预告或宣传画面，而将预告与另一个频道上的当今节目相关联起来。这特别应用于在不同频道上同时电视广播多个节目的网络，例如HDTV环境的情况。因此网络能够促进相同时间内正在电视广播的其他节目的收视。观众能够记录其他节目并继续观看他或她正在观看的节目。因此，在本说明中“未来”一词是为了便于理解本发明的原理，而此词也指另一个频道上电视广播的当今节目。
另一个选代方案是当关闭电视机时将一个或多个稍后电视节目的预告存储起来。在打开电视机之后，在屏幕上显示图标52以提醒观众有存储的预告。当观众从输入设备28发出一条命令时，如图6中所示，在屏幕上连续地出现预告。如果观众对预告的节目感兴趣，则观众从输入设备28发出另一条命令，因而如上所述地显示一个方框54(图3)。
可以不使用调用EPG功能选择菜单(图3)的单个图标52(图1)，而如图7所示地显示多个图标52a、52b和52c以便绕过图3的菜单。每个图标用一个记忆符标记以使观众能够将它与其他图标区别开，例如“R”代表“记录”，“W”代表“观看”，及“D”代表“细节”。当观众选择图标中之一时，例如单击所选图标时，即可直接地调用相应的EPG功能。
所描述的本发明实施例只是考虑为优选的，即只用于阐述本发明原理；本发明范围不限于这个实施例。熟悉技术的人可以在不背离本发明的实质和范围的情况下实现许多其他不同安排。例如，虽然优选可视图标，但也可使用可听图标以提醒观众存在预告或宣传画面。此外，如果只有记录功能可用，则可以绕过图3的菜单而直接显示图4的菜单；选代地，如果只有一个其他EPG功能可用，则可以绕过图3的菜单以利于提示以确认EPG功能或显示某些其他合适的提示功能。

Claims (11)

1．一种用于操作包括显示屏的家庭娱乐系统的方法，该方法包括以下步骤：
在屏幕上显示一个包括未来电视节目的预告或宣传画面的当今电视节目；
在预告期间、之前或之后标示一个关于未来电视节目的电子节目导视(EPG)功能的可用性；
在存储器内存储一个EPG数据库，该数据库包括的文件中包含关于可按照时间和按照频道检索的电视节目的信息，这些文件彼此链接以便能够通过访问关于当今电视节目的文件而获取关于未来电视节目的信息；
从数据库中关于当今电视节目的文件中按照时间和按照频道检索关于未来电视节目的信息；及
使用所检索的信息来执行EPG功能。
2．权利要求1的方法，其中EPG功能是“记录”，关于未来电视节目的信息是时间、日期、频道和长度，检索步骤检索未来电视节目的时间、日期、频道和长度，及执行步骤安排未来电视节目以供无人照顾的记录之用。

4．权利要求1的方法，其中EPG功能是“细节”，关于未来电视节目的信息是关于未来电视节目的细节，检索步骤检索这些细节，及执行步骤在屏幕上显示这些细节。
5．权利要求1的方法，附加地包括发出一条观众命令以便调用检索步骤和执行步骤的步骤。
6．一种家庭娱乐系统包括：
一个具有显示屏的监视器；
一个适合于在屏幕上显示一个当今电视节目的电视接收机，该当今电视节目包括未来电视节目的一个预告或宣传画面；
一个用于存储EPG数据库的存储器，该EPG数据库包括的文件中包含关于可按照时间和按照频道检索的电视节目的信息，这些文件彼此链接以便通过访问关于当今电视节目的文件而获取关于未来电视节目的信息；及
