Abstract

一种应用于具有移动功能终端机的液晶显示装置,该装置用于防止移动时机器落下而损坏,应用塑料作为基板材质。该装置中至少一个以上用塑料材质制作的并具有液晶驱动电极的下部基板和上部基板借助于液晶层连着,在各基板的背面附着偏光片,为了维持板间隙,在上述这些基板间介入衬垫,上述衬垫是和基板整体制作的支柱衬垫。在此,上述支柱衬垫与在塑料材质的下部基板或塑料材质的上部基板中仅任选的一个整体制作,或与塑料材质的下部基板及塑料材质的上部基板的全部整体制作。上述支柱衬垫具有板间隙±α的高度,上述板间隙设定在0.2~10μm,α在1μm以下。

Description

具有支柱衬垫整体型的塑料基板的液晶显示装置
技术领域
本发明涉及液晶显示装置,更详细地说,涉及能防止在应用了塑料基板的液晶显示装置中由衬垫分布不均而引起画面质量降低的液晶显示装置。
背景技术
随着无线移动通信的发展,作为通信终端机的信息显示装置,液晶显示装置被普遍利用。与此同时,由于具有移动功能的终端机的高画面质量、信息处理多量化、轻量化、及防止因移动时机器落下而损坏玻璃基板等消费者的要求条件多种多样,因此,研究开发出了与之相应的技术,例如,为了解决移动时机器落下而损坏玻璃基板的问题,作为具有移动功能的终端机的基板材质就由玻璃变为塑料。
在此,由于为轻量化且一次处理多量信息必须向塑料基板装配薄膜晶体管(thin film transistor)。因此,作为塑料基板物质,聚碳酸酯(polycarbonate)、聚酰亚胺(polyimide)、PES(聚脂)、PAR(4-(2-吡啶基偶氮)间苯二酚)、PEN(聚-2,6-萘二甲酸乙二酯)、及PET(聚对苯二甲酸乙二酯)等高分子物质得到利用,这时,上述高分子物质的热容许温度大约在150~200℃的程度。
另一方面,在应用玻璃基板的典型的液晶显示装置中,响应速度、对比度、视野角及亮度均匀性等特性与液晶层的厚度,即与板间隙有密切关联。因而,典型的液晶显示装置为了维持均匀的板间隙,在基板间的空间分布着球形的衬垫。
作为进行分布上述衬垫的方式,可以举出干式(dry)方式和湿式(wet)方式。干式方式是使衬垫带电,利用已带电的极性彼此相同的衬垫间的排斥力进行均匀分布;湿式方式是将衬垫均匀地掺合到IPA等溶剂中之后进行分布,一般地,在薄膜晶体管液晶显示装置的制造工序中,主要采用分布均匀度特性相对良好的干式方式。
因而,在应用塑料基板的具有移动功能的终端机的情况中,制造时为了维持基板间的均匀的板间隙,也必须使用干式方式或湿式方式来完成衬垫的分布。
但是,在应用塑料基板并且分布了球形衬垫的液晶显示装置的情况,因上述塑料基板具有易弯曲(flexible)特性,因而有时塑料基板弯曲,或象纸一样卷起,这时,球形衬垫当然就移动到任意位置上,从而产生活性区域内的衬垫结块,因此,在灰色标度(greyscale)驱动时,就存在特定色调上产生亮度不均的问题。
发明内容
因而,本发明的目的是提供一种应用塑料基板的能防止因球形衬垫移动和结块而发生亮度不均的液晶显示装置。
为了达到上述目的,本发明提供一种液晶显示装置,该装置中,具有液晶驱动电极,至少任选的一个用塑料材质制作的下部基板和上部基板借助于液晶层连着,在各基板的背面附着偏光片,为了维持板间隙(ce ll gap),在上述这些基板间介入衬垫,上述衬垫是和基板整体制作的支柱衬垫。
在此,上述支柱衬垫与在塑料材质的下部基板或塑料材质的上部基板中仅任选的一个整体制作,或与塑料材质的下部基板及塑料材质的上部基板的全部整体制作。
此外,上述支柱衬垫具有板间隙±α的高度,这时,上述板间隙最好设定在0.2~10μm,α在1μm以下。
并且,通过滚压方式或者模压方式,用任选一个以上的塑料材质基板和整体模具的支柱衬垫形成上述衬垫,其中滚压出方式利用了具有阴刻的支柱衬垫形状的图形的滚筒,模压方式利用了具有阴刻的支柱衬垫形状的图形的模。
参照本发明的最佳实施例的以下说明,能明确如上所述的本发明的目的和其它的特征及优点等。

具体实施方式
图1是示出本发明的实施例的液晶显示装置中的塑料基板的平面图。如图所示,塑料基板1具有特别是用于维持基板间的间隔的,即板间隙的衬垫用整体一体型构成的支柱衬垫2,用从具有移动式天线功能的终端机的用于信息显示装置的液晶显示装置的下部基板或上部基板中任选其一,或者,下部基板和上部基板全部的材料作成。
在如上所述的支柱衬垫整体型的塑料基板1中,最好按梯形形状形成上述支柱衬垫2,此外,也可以从方形、圆筒形及半球型中任选一种形状。
此外,上述支柱衬垫2最好形成为光不能漏泄的区域,例如,下部基板用支柱衬垫整体型塑料基板制作时,在开关总线或数据总线的下面形成上述支柱衬垫2,上部基板用支柱衬垫整体型塑料基板制作时,在黑底的下面形成上述支柱衬垫2。
并且,上述支柱衬垫2的大小,即,宽度(W)和邻接的支柱衬垫2间的间隔(L)是考虑下部基板上的电器开关和数据总线的宽度和上部基板上的黑底的宽度和密度等而设定的。此外,上述支柱衬垫2的高度(h)参考了考虑板间隙和支柱衬垫位置的部位差别和开口部差别的值(α),按板间隙±α的值决定。在此,上述板间隙在0.2~10μm,且α值在1μm以下。
另一方面,为了制造如上所述的支柱衬垫整体型的塑料基板,本发明或如图3所示,用滚压方式,或如图4所示,用模压方式形成,其中滚压方式利用了具有阴刻的支柱衬垫形状的图形11的滚筒10b,而模压方式利用了具有阴刻的支柱衬垫形状的图形21的模20b。
详细地说,在利用上述滚压方式时,如图3所示,在一对滚筒10a和10b之间经过能形状化的塑料物质,利用在某一个滚筒,例如上部滚筒10b上具有阴刻的支柱衬垫形状的图形11,以整体方式在经过上述滚筒10a和10b压出的塑料基板1上形成支柱衬垫2。
在利用上述模压方式时,如图4所示,准备好容器形状的下模20a和具有阴刻的支柱衬垫形状的图形21的上模20b之后,在上述下模20a内已装入了塑料溶液22的状态下,用具有上述阴刻支柱衬垫形状的图形21的上模20b压挤塑料溶液22,之后,除去上述模20a和20b,就制作成支柱衬垫整体型的塑料基板1。
图5A至图5C是示出应用本发明的实施例的支柱衬垫整体型的塑料基板的液晶显示装置的设计图,其说明如下。
图5A是用支柱衬垫整体型塑料基板制造的下部基板的液晶显示装置的剖面图。如图所示,用塑料材质做的下部基板30和上部基板32中间经过液晶34由O型密封圈36连着,在各基板30和32的外侧面附着偏光片38。特别是用于维持基板30和32间的间隔,即板间隙的衬垫与下部基板30的塑料基板成一体。
图5b是用支柱衬垫整体型塑料基板制造的下部基板的液晶显示装置的剖面图。如图所示,本实施例涉及的液晶显示装置具有与上述实施例类似的构造,只是上部基板32用具有整体型支柱衬垫的塑料基板制造。
图5c是下部基板和上部基板都是用支柱衬垫整体型塑料基板制造的液晶显示装置的剖面图。如图所示,本实施例涉及的液晶显示装置中,用具有整体型的支柱衬垫的塑料基板制造下部基板30和上部基板32,但必须恰当地调节上述支柱衬垫的形成位置。
如前所述的本发明的液晶显示装置应用支柱衬垫整体型塑料基板而构成,但在因塑料基板的易弯曲特性而弯曲或卷起时也不产生衬垫移动的情况。因而,不能导致因衬垫不均而液晶显示装置的画面质量降低,此外,不需要用于形成上述支柱衬垫的另外的工序,具有节省成本的优点。
如上所述,本发明用塑料材质的基板和整体模具制作衬垫,能防止衬垫移动和结块,因而,能维持板间隙的均匀,提高亮度和对比度,因此能实现高质量的液晶显示装置。此外,本发明为了维持均匀的板间隙而制作支柱衬垫,但不需要为了用塑料基板和整体模具形成支柱衬垫而进行用于形成上述支柱衬垫的另外的工序,因此,能起到节省成本的效果。
此外,本发明可以在不脱离其主旨的范围内做各种各样的变形实施。

Claims (5)

1.一种液晶显示装置,其特征在于,该装置中,具有液晶驱动电极,至少任选的一个用塑料材质制作的下部基板和上部基板借助于液晶层连着,在各基板的背面附着偏光片,为了维持板间隙,在上述这些基板间介入衬垫,上述衬垫是和基板整体制作的支柱衬垫。
2.如权利要求1所述的液晶显示装置,其特征在于,上述衬垫与塑料材质的下部基板和上部基板的至少一个整体进行制作。
3.如权利要求1所述的液晶显示装置,其特征在于,上述支柱衬垫具有板间隙是等于或小于±1μm的高度。
4.如权利要求3所述的液晶显示装置,其特征在于,上述板间隙设定在0.2~10μm。
5.如权利要求1所述的液晶显示装置,其特征在于,上述衬垫经过利用了具有阴刻的支柱衬垫形状的图形的滚筒的滚压出方式,或者,利用了具有阴刻的支柱衬垫形状的图形的模架的模制方式,用至少一个塑料材质的基板和整体模具的支柱衬垫形成。
