Abstract

A sugar cane harvester having an improved shoot cutter assembly. The present invention relates to a sugar cane harvester and more particularly to an improved detabber assembly (100) of a sugar cane harvester capable of severing an upper leaf portion of a sugar cane stalk and discharging the severed upper leaf portion on either side of a harvesting zone. The stripper assembly (100) comprises parallel double arms (16, 17) for supporting the stripper assembly (100) by hanging a stripper cylinder 10 support (14) following an arcuate path accommodating a counter-rotating twin accumulating cylinder (1, 2) in operation, the twin accumulating cylinder comprising a plurality of V-shaped accumulating fins (3, 15). The parallel arms (16, 17) are vertically adjustable by retracting or extending the hydraulic cylinder (20), which provides an extension rod that allows cutting of the upper 15 lobate portion of the highest sugarcane variety.

Technical Field
The present invention relates to a sugar cane harvester, and more particularly to an improved detabber assembly of a sugar cane harvester capable of severing an upper leaf portion of a sugar cane stalk and discharging the severed upper leaf portion on either side of a harvesting zone.
Background
There are many types of sugar cane harvesters in the public domain. The main function of a sugar cane harvester is to harvest growing sugar cane stalks by cutting the cane at the root of the cane and then transfer the cut cane to a collection vehicle such as a cane wagon or cane trolley. The sugar cane harvester may include different types of harvesting devices. Harvesting apparatus for a sugar cane harvester may include components for cutting, chopping, sorting, transporting, and collecting and processing sugar cane plants. Typically, harvesting devices include a shoot breaker assembly, a crop separator assembly, a knock down roller assembly, a base cutter assembly, a feed roller, a cutting drum, a trash fan assembly, and the like.
The detabber assembly provides the function of severing the upper leafy portion of the sugarcane stalk because it does not contain significant amounts of sugar. Conventional de-shoot devices work such that the upper leafy portion of the sugarcane stalks is cut and thrown into furrows adjacent the row being harvested. The transport vehicle travels over the discarded upper lobe on the next pass through the field.
Ideally, the detabber assembly should be able to eject the severed upper leaf portion to one side or the other so that the upper leaf portion is thrown onto the area that has already been harvested, rather than onto standing cane, regardless of the manner in which the harvester is traveling.
Conventionally, various pin remover assemblies have been developed. One such stripper assembly is disclosed in US3398515 which describes a tip stripping mechanism for a sugar cane harvester comprising: rotating the cutter; a pair of gathering devices projecting forwardly from the cutter, each gathering device having a plurality of fingers constrained to move along respective predetermined paths to guide the sugarcane top tips inwardly and rearwardly between the gathering devices to the cutter; a reversible motor drive coupled with the cutter such that rotation of the cutter is reversed with the motor reversed; two driving shafts coupled to each other to rotate in opposite directions and driving the accumulating means; an endless drive member coupling each shaft to the motor through a respective one-way clutch mechanism arranged to drive one or the other shaft in mutually opposite directions in response to reversal of the direction of movement of the endless drive member when the motor is reversed.
However, in practice a reasonable proportion of the severed upper leaf portion remains within the influence of the gathering means away from the selected discharge side of the harvester and is thus discharged from the other side into the standing crop, thus interfering with its subsequent harvesting. Furthermore, the drive transmission which allows the direction of rotation of the cutter to be reversed is expensive to manufacture.
Accordingly, there is a need for a stripper assembly that addresses the above-mentioned problems, and for a cane harvester stripper mechanism that is capable of severing the upper leaf portion and discharging the severed top tip on either side of the harvesting area.
Object of the Invention
It is a primary object of the present invention to overcome the problems associated with the shoot cutter assemblies of conventional sugar cane harvesters by providing an improved shoot cutter assembly for the proper harvesting of sugar cane fields.
It is another object of the present invention to provide an improved detailer assembly for avoiding accumulation of severed upper leaf portions on standing cane.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide an improved stripper assembly such that it can be raised or lowered to accommodate the height of the sugar cane being harvested.
Disclosure of Invention
The present invention relates to a sugar cane harvester, and more particularly, it relates to an improved detabber assembly of a sugar cane harvester capable of severing an upper leaf portion of a sugar cane stalk and discharging the severed upper leaf portion on either side of a harvesting zone. The pin remover assembly comprises parallel arms for supporting the pin remover assembly by hanging a pin remover roller support which follows an arcuate path accommodating a double accumulating roller rotating in opposite directions in operation, the double accumulating roller comprising a plurality of V-shaped collecting fins. The parallel arms can be adjusted vertically by retracting or extending the hydraulic cylinders, which provide an extension rod that allows the upper leaf portion of the tallest sugarcane variety to be cut.

Detailed Description
Before the present invention is explained in detail, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and the arrangement of components set forth in the following drawings. The invention is capable of other embodiments than those described and of being practiced or of being carried out in various ways. It is to be understood that the phraseology or terminology employed herein is for the purpose of description and not of limitation.
It is also to be understood that the term "comprising" and its grammatical equivalents are used herein to indicate the optional presence of other elements, components, steps, etc. For example, an article that "includes" components A, B and C may consist of (i.e., contain only) components A, B and C, or may contain not only components A, B and C but one or more other components.
In fig. 1, there is shown a sugar cane harvester comprising: a detabber assembly (100) for cutting an upper lobed portion of a sugarcane stalk; an accumulation zone (101); a crop separator assembly (102) for lifting and spanning a row of sugarcane stalks; modular knock down rollers (not shown) and fin rollers (not shown) to help align the plants to feed into the harvester throat; a pair of base cutters (103) for cutting sugarcane stalks from a field; a frame portion (14a, 14 b); a feed zone (105) comprising a feed roller system for further moving the cut sugarcane stalks in a back-up direction without damaging or crushing the sugarcane; a cutting system or cutter drum (106) for cutting the sugarcane stalks into bits in the form of short segments; an improved clean room (107) having a purge fan assembly (not shown) (i.e., a primary purge fan) for separating dirt and foreign material from the short section by blowing air onto the short section; a lifting system (108) comprising a secondary de-aeration fan for removing remaining loose material as the sugar cane falls from the transport end; an operating room (109) for operating and controlling the harvesting machine; a pair of hydraulic cylinders (110); and a discharge zone (111) for discharging the harvested short sugarcane stalk segments.
The present invention discloses in particular an improved detabber assembly for a sugar cane harvester as shown in the accompanying drawings which is capable of discharging the severed upper lobed portions of sugar cane stalks on either side of the harvesting zone.
Referring to fig. 2-4, the improved pin remover assembly (100) according to the present invention is hydraulically connected by parallel double arms (16, 17) for supporting said pin remover assembly (100). The parallel double arms (16, 17) are telescopically mounted on the front bottom side of the operating chamber (109) by means of a single acting hydraulic cylinder (20). The double arms (16, 17) which pivot at the mounting joint (19) to provide an elongate bar which allows the upper leaf portion of the tallest cane variety to be cut off, can be adjusted vertically by retracting or extending the hydraulic cylinder (20) connected between the frame and lower lever arm (17) of the harvester (not shown).
The improved stripper assembly shown in fig. 4 comprises a stripper drum holder (14) connected to the parallel double arms (16, 17) at the pivoting mounting joints (16A ', 17A') and (16A, 17A) by using a bolt connection (18), receiving arms (6, 13) extending from the stripper drum holder (14) in a bent configuration of "U", counter-rotating double converging drums (1, 2) mounted on the receiving arms (6, 13), respectively, hydraulic motors (5, 7) being provided, one hydraulic motor for each of the converging drums powering it, and a central cutter disc (10) connected to the cutter drum (11), the cutter drum (11) facilitating engagement of a splined flange (8) with splines of the hydraulic motor (12) inside, the central cutter disc (10) being rotatable in a plane above the base plate, wherein a plurality of removable serrated knives (9) are mounted intermittently around the circumference of the central cutter disc (10). The hydraulic motor (12) is reversible so that the central cutter disc (10) can be rotated in either a clockwise or counterclockwise direction as required for harvesting operations.
The stripper roller support (14) follows an arcuate path accommodating axially extending, in-service counter-rotating twin accumulating rollers (1, 2) and comprises weldments with stiffening members (4, 4'), as shown in figure 2. The double accumulation drum comprises a plurality of V-shaped accumulation fins (3, 15) connected to the bottom of the double accumulation drum (1, 2) suitable for directing the upper lobed portion inwards and backwards between the double accumulation drum (1, 2) towards the central cutter disc (10).
As the double drum (1, 2) and the central cutter disc (10) rotate, the severed upper leaf portions of the cane are ejected to either side of the harvester so that the upper leaf portions are thrown onto the area that has been harvested rather than onto standing cane.

The scope of the invention should, therefore, be determined not with reference to the above description, but instead should be determined with reference to the appended claims, along with the full scope of equivalents to which such claims are entitled.

The claims (modification according to treaty clause 19)
1. A sugar cane harvester having an improved shoot cutter assembly (100), the sugar cane harvester comprising:
a detabber assembly (100) for cutting an upper lobed portion of a sugarcane stalk;
a crop separator assembly (102) for lifting and spanning a row of sugarcane stalks;
a modular knock down roller and fin roller for helping to align the plant for feeding into the harvester throat;
a pair of base cutters (103) for cutting the sugarcane stalks from a field;
a feed zone (105) comprising a feed roller system for moving the cut sugarcane stalks further in a back-up direction without damaging or crushing the sugarcane;
a cutting system or chopper drum (106) for cutting the sugarcane stalks into bits in the form of short segments;
a cleaning chamber (107) for separating foreign matter, leaves and dirt from the cut pieces of sugar cane by blowing air onto the short pieces;
a lifting system (108) comprising a secondary de-aeration fan for removing remaining loose material as the sugar cane falls from the transport end;
an operating room (109) for operating and controlling the harvesting machine; and
a discharge zone (111) for discharging harvested short sugarcane stalks,
the improved tip remover assembly comprises: a pin remover roller bracket (14); receiving arms (6, 13) extending from the stripper roller bracket (14) in a bent configuration of a "U"; counter-rotating double accumulation drums (1, 2) mounted respectively on the receiving arms (6, 13); a hydraulic motor (5, 7) for each accumulation drum (1, 2); and a central cutter disc (10) connected to a cutter drum (11), the cutter drum (11) assisting in the engagement of an internally splined adapter flange (8) with a splined shaft of a hydraulic motor (12), the central cutter disc (10) being rotatable in a plane above the floor,
characterized in that the stripper cylinder bracket (14) is connected to the parallel arms (16, 17) at pivotal mounting joints (16A ', 17A') and (16A, 17A) by using bolt connections (18).
2. The sugar cane harvester with an improved pin cutter assembly (100) according to claim 1, characterized in that the improved pin cutter assembly (100) is hydraulically connected by parallel double arms (16, 17).
3. The sugar cane harvester with improved detailer assembly (100) of claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the parallel double arms (16, 17) are telescopically mounted on the front bottom side of the cab (109) by a single acting hydraulic cylinder (20).
4. The sugar cane harvester with improved detailer assembly (100) of claim 1, wherein said double gathering drum (1, 2) includes a plurality of V-shaped gathering fins (3, 15) connected to the bottom of said double gathering drum (1, 2), said plurality of V-shaped gathering fins (3, 15) adapted to direct upper leaf portions inwardly and rearwardly between said double gathering drum (1, 2) toward said central cutter disc (10).
5. The sugar cane harvester with improved detabber assembly (100) according to claim 1, characterized in that a plurality of removable serrated knives (9) are mounted intermittently on the central cutter disc (10) around its circumference.
6. The sugar cane harvester with the improved shoot cutter assembly (100) of claim 1 wherein said hydraulic motor (12) is reversible.

Claims (7)

1. A sugar cane harvester having an improved shoot cutter assembly (100), the sugar cane harvester comprising:
a detabber assembly (100) for cutting an upper lobed portion of a sugarcane stalk;
a crop separator assembly (102) for lifting and spanning a row of sugarcane stalks;
a modular knock down roller and fin roller for helping to align the plant for feeding into the harvester throat;
a pair of base cutters (103) for cutting the sugarcane stalks from a field;
a feed zone (105) comprising a feed roller system for moving the cut sugarcane stalks further in a back-up direction without damaging or crushing the sugarcane;
a cutting system or chopper drum (106) for cutting the sugarcane stalks into bits in the form of short segments;
a cleaning chamber (107) for separating foreign matter, leaves and dirt from the cut pieces of sugar cane by blowing air onto the short pieces;
a lifting system (108) comprising a secondary de-aeration fan for removing remaining loose material as the sugar cane falls from the transport end;
an operating room (109) for operating and controlling the harvesting machine; and
a discharge zone (111) for discharging harvested short sugarcane stalks,
wherein the improved tip remover assembly comprises: a pin remover roller bracket (14); receiving arms (6, 13) extending from the stripper roller bracket (14) in a bent configuration of a "U"; counter-rotating double accumulation drums (1, 2) mounted respectively on the receiving arms (6, 13); a hydraulic motor (5, 7) for each accumulation drum (1, 2); and a central cutter disc (10) connected to a cutter drum (11), the cutter drum (11) assisting in the engagement of an internally splined adapter flange (8) with a splined shaft of a hydraulic motor (12), the central cutter disc (10) being rotatable in a plane above the floor.
2. The sugar cane harvester with an improved pin cutter assembly (100) according to claim 1, characterized in that the improved pin cutter assembly (100) is hydraulically connected by parallel double arms (16, 17).
3. The sugar cane harvester with improved detailer assembly (100) of claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the parallel double arms (16, 17) are telescopically mounted on the front bottom side of the cab (109) by a single acting hydraulic cylinder (20).
4. The sugar cane harvester with improved detabber assembly (100) according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the detabber drum cradle (14) is connected to the parallel arms (16, 17) at the pivotal mounting joints (16A ', 17A') and (16A, 17A) by using bolted connections (18).
5. The sugar cane harvester with improved detailer assembly (100) of claim 1, wherein said double gathering drum (1, 2) includes a plurality of V-shaped gathering fins (3, 15) connected to the bottom of said double gathering drum (1, 2), said plurality of V-shaped gathering fins (3, 15) adapted to direct upper leaf portions inwardly and rearwardly between said double gathering drum (1, 2) toward said central cutter disc (10).
6. The sugar cane harvester with improved detabber assembly (100) according to claim 1, characterized in that a plurality of removable serrated knives (9) are mounted intermittently on the central cutter disc (10) around its circumference.
7. The sugar cane harvester with the improved shoot cutter assembly (100) of claim 1 wherein said hydraulic motor (12) is reversible.
