Heading A1F. [Also in Division A4] A forage harvester comprises a pick-up 2 and a chopper 1 forming a line cutting mechanism arranged as a narrow unit which is mounted on a support 3 to extend alongside a tractor. The support 3 is constructed for attachment to the tractor three-point linkage. The pick-up 2 has gathering chains 20, 21 to feed crop through pressure rollers 27, 30 to a cutter drum 31 from which the crop is discharged up a shoot into a trailed cart 6. The support 3 can be supported by a ground wheel and is adjustably attached to the upper link bearing of the tractor threeport linkage by a U-frame whereby the support 3 can be rotated to adjust the height of operation of the harvester. Drive for the chopper is taken from the tractor power take-off through gearing and cardan shafts which can be arranged in association with spur or chain gearing to allow the harvester to be carried in a forward position. In an embodiment, the support 3 is telescopically adjustable. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 29 a ground wheel 150 supporting the harvester is adjustable by operation of a ram 151 which is connected into the tractor hydraulic circuit. Using appropriate valves 154, 157 the ram 151 can be operated either by the pressure in the tractor ram 143 or directly. The harvester can be supported at its front on the tractor in an adjustable manner. In further embodiments a plurality of pick-up and chopper units are arranged side by side adapted to feed a common discharge spout, the connecting parts to which may be flexible. In this case the support 3 has a pivot to allow the units to be swung behind the tractor. With two units, the outer unit can be arranged to be swung behind or on top of the other unit. In the embodiment of Fig. 41 a tworow harvester can be pivoted at 235 on support 3 to reduce the width of the device for transport.
