本公开涉及用于光学滞后控制的液晶装置。通常,液晶(LC)材料是具有一些结晶性质(例如,内部结构的定向,诸如指示LC分子的局部平均排列的LC指向矢)的液体,该结晶性质可以通过施加外部刺激(诸如电场或磁场)而被选择性地改变。LC指向矢的定向的变化改变了LC材料的光学性质,例如改变LC双折射的光轴。虽然液晶的可选定向具有广泛的应用(例如,电子显示器),但是本公开涉及称为可变光学滞后器或LC可变滞后器(LCVR)的一类装置。

为了精确地计算高光谱数据立方体,用于应用上述变换的处理设备应当精确地了解LCVR在其光圈上对于每个单独干涉图样本的光学路径延迟。这可以,例如,通过单色参考光源、校准光源或通过LCVR指向并且相对于LCVR的慢轴以45度线性偏振的激光器来完成。记录已通过LCVR并平行于源偏振而偏振的光的强度,并且经由本领域已知的方法(诸如Takeda傅立叶变换方法)计算相位(并因此计算光学路径延迟)。然而,出于实际原因,该测量通常仅在LCVR的一个位置处使用以下假设来进行:LCVR的滞后没有空间相关性。然而,LCVR可能具有显著的空间相关滞后变化,因此该假设可能导致从通过LCVR的位置成像的空间相关干涉图的区域计算高光谱数据立方体的部分有潜在误差,这些位置在滞后方面与在实际测量滞后的位置大幅不同。
通常用于高光谱成像器的LCVR一般包括厚LC层,以便获得高水平的光学滞后。这种所需的LC层厚度导致LCVR缓慢切换,可能比高光谱成像布置中所需的慢得多。通过以适当的电压波形动态地驱动LCVR,可以比其自然弛豫时间更快地切换LCVR。然而,LCVR被驱动得越快,空间相关性被引入瞬时延迟的可能性就越大。这是因为LCVR中的LC单元通常不是完全平坦或均匀的,并且每个位置根据其厚度或其它位置相关参数而不同地响应。为了解决这个问题,可以在LCVR两端的许多点处测量空间相关滞后,因为标称滞后被改变以便提高用于计算高光谱数据立方体的变换操作的准确性。高光谱成像过程的更多细节可以在2016年5月5日的美国公开2016/0123811,以及A.Hegyi和J.Martini,《光学快讯(Opt.Express)》23,28742-28754(2015)中找到。
用于以紧凑形状因子组合两个图像的一种技术被称为“波导”。通常,来自显示器的光耦合到玻璃“波导”中,该玻璃“波导”使用某种形式的耦合元件(例如,衍射光学元件)形成显示窗口。然后使用第二耦合元件将其耦合出显示窗口。耦合元件可以是,例如,衍射元件、部分反射元件、波导耦合器等。该布置用作潜望镜,并且它扩大显示器的出瞳。它在本领域中被称为“出瞳扩大器”。本公开涉及一种用于将出瞳扩大器与液晶可变滞后器相结合的装置和方法。
在图1中,框图示出了根据实施例的使用具有出瞳扩大器102的LVCR 100的光学装置。LCVR 100包括与基板103相邻的液晶层101。LCVR 100与参考光源104相邻,该参考光源诸如提供具有预定偏振状态的准直单色光的激光器。可以使用其它光源,例如发光二极管,并且其它光源与和光源104或基板集成的其它光学器件结合,这些光学器件诸如准直器、偏振器、滤光器、模式转换器等。来自光源104的光耦合到出瞳扩大器102中,该出瞳扩大器包括玻璃基板108,如该示例中所示,该玻璃基板可以与LCVR 100一体形成。来自光源104的光105(图中用虚线指示)经由光学输入特征106(诸如输入波导、输入小平面或衍射光学元件(诸如刻划或全息光栅))耦合到玻璃基板108中。玻璃基板用作波导,其将光引导到多个第二耦合元件110,该第二耦合元件将光109耦合出基板108并通过LCVR 100。与近眼显示器相比,扩大的出射光瞳的角视场应当非常小。这是因为通过LCVR 100的光学路径延迟的角度相关性不是问题。优选实施例将确保耦合光109具有标称线性偏振状态,在LCVR 100的偏振轴与慢轴之间具有标称45度角。
多个耦合元件110在空间上分散在玻璃基板108的主表面上。在所示的示例中,主表面对应于xy平面。例如当用于高光谱成像时,可以存在检测器114,诸如LCVR 100后面的焦平面阵列(FPA)。将光105耦合到LC层101的不同区域,允许通过LCVR 100测量在不同xy坐标处的瞬时光学路径延迟。检测器114在这些位置具有对应的传感器(例如,像素),并且在优选实施例中,通过分析与耦合光109的偏振平行偏振的光的强度,可以在每个xy坐标处进行光学路径延迟的单独测量。
耦合元件110使从出瞳扩大器102发射的光通过LCVR 100的一个或多个空间上唯一的区域分散。一个或多个耦合元件110可以被布置为使得出瞳扩大器102在z向上并且从一维图案(例如,与y方向平行的线)发射光109。在其它实施例中,出瞳扩大器102可以发射二维图案。图2和3的示意图示出了出瞳扩大器的示例,该出瞳扩大器发射二维图案并且可以用在图1的设备中。
在图2中,出瞳扩大器包括透明基板200,其在基板200的表面200b上具有光学输入特征202(例如,衍射光栅、输入波导等)。光学输入202可以在基板200的任何表面(包括边缘)上。光学输入202被配置为从光源204接收光并且沿着第一路径206(例如,形成在基板200中的第一水平波导)引导光。多个第一耦合元件208被配置为将光的一部分反射到第二路径210,例如形成在基板200中的第二垂直波导。应当理解,术语“水平”和“垂直”是为了方便参考附图而使用的,而并不认为是限制性的;出瞳扩大器通常在任何定向上以相同方式起作用。
多个第二耦合元件212沿着第二光学路径210布置,并且被配置为将入射到元件212上的光的一部分朝向基板200的输出表面200a反射。第二耦合元件212被示为布置成矩形网格,尽管其它图案也是可能的。例如,耦合元件212可以基于LCVR的先验知识(例如,增加要经历更大的滞后空间梯度的区域中的元件212的密度)在空间上非均匀地分布。注意,耦合元件208、212中的每一个将被配置为反射光的第一部分并且沿着光路进一步透射光的第二部分。例如,假设期望在网格上均匀照明并且假设没有光学损耗,则最左边的光学元件208将被配置为在负y向上反射入射光的1/6并且在x向上透射入射光的5/6。下一个光学元件将反射1/5并传递4/5,每个元件反射相对较大的部分,直到最右边的元件208反射所有的光。这些值可以针对光学损耗、制造公差、期望的非均匀强度分布等进行调整。
在图3中,出瞳扩大器包括透明基板300,其在一个或多个表面上具有两个或更多个光学输入302(例如,衍射光栅、输入波导等)。光学输入302被配置为从两个或更多个光源304接收光并且沿着两个或更多个路径306(例如,形成在基板300中的水平波导)引导光。多个耦合元件308被配置为将光的一部分从基板300的出射表面300a中反射出去。耦合元件308可以与关于图2描述的相同名称的元件类似地配置。
如图1中所示的光学装置可以使用出瞳扩大器,其使用图2和3中所示的特征的任何组合。注意,图2和3中的光学耦合器可以使用不同类型的光学元件,使得在出射光瞳处形成不同的图案。例如,耦合元件可以形成线、曲线和其它形状,而不是图2和3中所示的点。应当提到的是,可以使用其它出瞳扩大方法。例如,可以使用微透镜阵列或微光电机械装置形成出瞳扩大器,并且可以使用全息光学器件作为上文所示的部分反射和/或折射元件的替代或补充。
在图4中,示意图示出了根据示例性实施例的包括光学装置401的偏振干涉仪400。光学装置401包括类似于关于图1所描述的LCVR 402和出瞳扩大器404。出瞳扩大器404可以与LCVR 402成一体或分开。参考光源406(例如,激光器)将光耦合到出瞳扩大器404中,该出瞳扩大器将光朝向检测器408引出LCVR 402。偏振干涉仪400还包括在偏振干涉仪的相应第一和第二侧上的偏振器410、412。偏振器412放置在LCVR 402与检测器408之间,使得耦合出该出瞳扩大器404的光也通过偏振器412。来自光源406的光在耦合到出瞳扩大器404中之前可以或可以不通过偏振器412,如交替路径407a至b所指示。
在图5中,示意图示出了根据另一个示例性实施例的与出瞳扩大器502一起使用的LCVR 500。LCVR 500和出瞳扩大器502经由间隙504(例如,气隙)分离。间隙504增加了出瞳扩大器502中的波导与周围介质之间的折射对比度。LCVR 500内的液晶材料具有类似于在LCVR中使用的许多透明基板(例如,玻璃)的折射率,从而降低它的基板内的导向光学模式的数量。因此,在许多实施例中,可能优选的是包括间隙504,以便在出瞳扩大器502的波导内充分地保持期望的导向光学模式。与先前的图一样,参考光源506和检测器508可以与LCVR 500和出瞳扩大器502一起使用。
应当考虑,从而使出瞳扩大器不会不利地遮挡将要通过LCVR(例如,从待成像物体通过)的外部光,如图5中的箭头510所表示)。这可以,例如通过使用“低效率”出瞳扩大器(例如,使用以低效率将光耦合出该出瞳扩大器的导向模式的耦合元件)来进行。通过光可逆性,此类低效率耦合器将图像光510最低程度地耦合到出瞳扩大器502的导向模式中,因此允许图像光510由检测器508成像。可以一直增加光源506的强度以补偿耦合器的低效率。
在图6中,框图示出了根据另一个示例性实施例的出瞳扩大器600。扩大器600为参考光源602提供出射视瞳以扩大成跨LCVR 604的图案,诸如点或线的图案,其以足够的点(但不是多到不利地遮挡LCVR的光圈的点)对LCVR 604进行空间采样以估计滞后的空间分布。因此,出瞳扩大器600可以包括比上面示出的实施例更少和/或更小的光学耦合元件和波导。例如,光学耦合元件和波导可以将出射光瞳的面积扩大到不超过LCVR 604的光圈的1%。通常,光圈是LCVR 604中光可以通过的未遮挡部分,并且出于本公开的目的,意图覆盖LCVR 604中图像光通过的未遮挡部分。
注意,即使覆盖范围小到LCVR的光圈的1%,出瞳扩大器600也可以在足够的空间分布区域上分布参考光以高精度地估计空间相关滞后。例如,考虑将LCVR的30mm×20mm(600mm2)光圈分成其中要单独测量延迟的600个正方形(30×20个网格)。对于该示例进一步假设,出瞳扩大器将参考光分布到30×20个网格的正方形输出耦合器,每个耦合器的面积为大约(0.1mm)2=0.01mm2。在这种情况下,输出耦合器的总面积为600×0.01mm2,其为光圈的总面积的(6mm2)/(600mm2)=1%。注意,为了简单起见,我们在上述计算中不包括波导和除输出耦合器之外的耦合元件对光圈的遮挡,尽管它们对光圈的影响也可以包括在内。
与上述组合或分开,将激光分成两个预定义偏振状态(例如,线性和圆形偏振状态)使得可以测量用于对每个滞后位置进行采样的干涉图的同相和正交分量可能是有用的。可以使用时分复用或空间复用来完成这两次测量。例如,如图6中所示,出瞳扩大器600内的可选特征606可以使传播通过出瞳扩大器600的光的一部分608从线性偏振光旋转到圆偏振光,而其余的光610保持线性偏振。通过比较线性和圆偏振参考光的干涉图的瞬时强度或同相和正交强度,可以2π为模计算通过LCVR的参考光的瞬时相位延迟。
特征606可以是基于波导的偏振分束器,接着是一个偏振的90°移相器和两个偏振的重组装置。分离的光束608、610将耦合到通过出瞳扩大器600的相邻波导中,并且对于每个偏振使用共同或单独的耦合元件605耦合出该出瞳扩大器600。每组相邻波导产生两个单独的点或线阵列或图案,来自一个阵列或图案的光相对于另一个偏振旋转。如图所示,单独的阵列或图案(或其元素)可以位于非常接近的位置,使得同相和正交干涉图分量可以经由检测器615尽可能彼此接近地测量。注意,分束和偏振分量的布置应当使得分离的光束608、610的偏振状态应当如所描述的那样,例如在离开出瞳扩大器时的线性和圆形偏振。
特征606可以用在本文描述的任何实施例中。在其它实施例中,可以配置两个光源(例如,如图3中所示的两个不同的光源304),使得来自光源的光以不同的偏振耦合到出瞳扩大器中并通过出射光瞳经由单独的波导分布。同样,这可以通过在出瞳扩大器内引入一个或多个附加光源和输入耦合元件以及不同波导而与本文所述的任何实施例一起使用。
注意,因为上述滞后的测量依赖于检测从出瞳扩大器通过LCVR的两个光偏振的相对相位,并且因为相位只能以2π为模直接测量,所以滞后测量中存在固有的模糊性。在一些实施例中,使用出瞳扩大器进行的测量与给出绝对(尽管可能不那么准确)滞后测量的备用模态之一相结合。图6中示出了这种备选测量的一个示例,其中板612、614和处理电路616用作电容传感器。该传感器可以检测板612、614之间和LCVR 604内的液晶层604两端的电容,该电容如1993年9月21日的美国专利5,247,378所教导的那样单调地随延迟变化。电容可以反映平均延迟,并且经由出瞳扩大器发现的空间相关滞后可以与平均滞后相结合以找到LCVR 604的绝对的、空间相关的精确滞后测量。
在图7中,框图示出了根据示例性实施例的产生干涉图案的出瞳扩大器700。单独的光学耦合元件702、704,例如相对于在该示例中的z轴,以不同的输出角701、703将光耦合出扩大器700。通过选择这些角度701、703,结合它们在xy平面中的元件702、704之间的相对间隔706以及元件702、704与检测器710之间的距离708,可以在检测器710的选定区域上形成干涉图案。在其它实施例中,可以选择距离706、708和角度701、703,使得离开LCVR 711的光线被引导到检测器710的邻近但非重叠的区域,使得不形成干涉图案。
在图8中,框图示出了根据示例性实施例的设备800。设备800包括装置控制器802,其可包括一个或多个处理器,诸如中央处理单元、子处理器、数字信号处理器等。控制器802耦合到存储器804,其包括将在下文更详细描述的功能模块。存储器804可以包括易失性和非易失性存储器的组合,并且可以存储本领域已知的指令和数据。
该设备包括光学部分806,其包括从设备800外部接收光的外部光学接口808。外部光学接口808可以包括适合于将光从设备800外部传递到内部光学部件的窗口、透镜、滤光器、光圈等。在该示例中,外部光学接口808被示为耦合到外部透镜810。
偏振干涉仪812位于设备800的光学部分806中。偏振干涉仪812,例如经由电信号线,耦合到控制器802。该控制器802将信号加到偏振干涉仪812以在作为干涉仪812的部分的LCVR 812a中引起时变光学路径延迟或滞后。该时变光学路径延迟形成干涉图,该干涉图根据光学路径延迟而变化。该干涉图是由也耦合到控制器802的图像传感器814(例如,传感器像素阵列、焦平面阵列)检测到的。
偏振干涉仪812包括LCVR 812a,其可以与先前描述的实施例类似地配置。出瞳扩大器812b在外部光学接口808与LCVR 812a之间。出瞳扩大器812b从光源816接收参考光817a(例如,偏振和/或准直的单色光),并且使光在LCVR812a的主表面上扩大。干涉仪812的另一侧上的光电检测器(例如,传感器814或可选的单独检测器815)检测该扩大光817b,并且产生空间相关光电检测器信号,例如,表示各自在检测器814、815上的多个位置获得的单独光强测量值的信号。控制器802从光电检测器信号中提取空间相关滞后测量值。
注意,扩大的参考光817b可以与通过LCVR 812a的其它光809(例如,从透镜810接收的图像)一起检测或分开检测。例如,光学接口808可以包括快门,该快门阻挡入射光足够的时间以测量扩大的光。在其它实施例中,扩大的参考光817b可以与图像光809进行时分复用。在这种情况下,以高强度对光源816进行脉冲调制,同时在检测器814、815处进行非常短的曝光。扩大的参考光817b的高强度将使图像光809的影响最小化。例如,如果扩大的参考光817b的强度是图像光809的强度的100倍或10,000%,则上述用于测量扩大的参考光817b的非常短的曝光可以具有用于测量图像光809的曝光时间的0.01倍或1%的曝光时间以便产生相同的时间积分强度。因此,图像光809将在扩大的参考光817b的测量中引起至多1%的误差。
在其它实施例中,可以将扩大的参考光817b的强度调整为类似于图像光809,使得这两者可以在相同曝光中被同时捕获。如果扩大的参考光817b具有足够的强度,则它应当在经由检测器710恢复的光谱数据中产生可测量的光谱峰值,该峰值对应于单色光源816的已知波长。测量的峰值波长与光源816的已知波长之间的差异可以用于,例如,校准作为图像位置的函数的高光谱成像器的波长误差。
作为时间函数的空间相关滞后测量值可以由图像处理器820用于根据记录的干涉图计算高光谱数据立方体。通常,滞后控制器818指示装置控制器802将控制信号施加到LCVR 812a以实现时变滞后轨迹,在图像传感器814处产生也作为时间函数的空间相关干涉图。图像处理器820可以组合空间和时间相关滞后测量值和干涉图,以首先计算每个位置处作为滞后函数的干涉图,然后通过对所有干涉图关于滞后进行傅立叶变换来计算高光谱数据立方体。该图像处理中的一些或全部可以由外部装置(诸如计算机824,其经由数据传输接口822耦合到设备800)执行。在这种情况下,计算机824还可以接收经由出瞳扩大器812b获得的空间相依滞后测量值。
如果LCVR 812a的预期与实际滞后存在误差,则当使用预期而非实际滞后来计算所得光谱数据或高光谱数据立方体时,这些数据中将存在误差。该滞后控制器818可以使用经由出瞳扩大器812和光检测器814、815测量的空间相关滞后作为反馈或前馈控制模式的输入,以便使实际滞后更严格地遵循作为时间函数的预期的或期望的滞后。可以组合空间相关滞后测量值(例如,在空间上求均值),使得与期望的目标滞后轨迹的偏差可以被检测到,并且,例如,通过调整施加到LCVR 812a的电信号来提供补偿。这些控制模型还可以利用LCVR 812a内的一个或多个LC单元的电容测量值,例如,如图6中所示。替代地,LCVR 812a可以在每个基板上包括多于一个的电极(例如,电极对812aa至812ac),使得通过独立控制每个电极对两端的电压信号,可以对滞后进行空间相关控制。在这种情况下,对LCVR 812a的单个控制区附近的空间相关滞后测量值将仅在该区域上求均值,并且仅用于补偿该区域的LCVR 812a控制信号。
使用多个电极对812aa至812ac可以实现LCVR 812a的不同区域的更精确的滞后控制,这可以减少光谱数据中由LCVR 812a的空间相关滞后变化导致的误差。如果通过LCVR812a的图像光809被透镜810聚焦到图像传感器814上并且透镜810具有大的孔径光阑,则与一个图像传感器位置对应的图像光线将通过LCVR 812a的不同部分,因此可能会经历不同的滞后。这将减少干涉图对比度并且使光谱数据的测量值降级,使得对LCVR 812a的空间相关滞后的了解对于补偿所述降级是无用的。在这种情况下,由多个电极对812aa至812ac实现的空间相关滞后控制可以用于增加LCVR 812a的瞬时滞后的空间均匀性,以便保持高干涉图对比度并且防止这种测量降级。
在图9中,流程图示出了根据示例性实施例的方法。该方法涉及将参考光耦合900到出瞳扩大器的光学输入中。将参考光扩大901到出瞳扩大器的一个或多个空间分离区域。使扩大的参考光通过902LCVR。基于对通过LCVR的扩大的参考光进行检测903,确定904LCVR的空间相关滞后。

Claims (9)
1.一种光学装置,其包括:
液晶可变滞后器LCVR;
出瞳扩大器,其光学耦合到所述LCVR,所述出瞳扩大器包括:
至少一个光输入特征,其从参考光源接收参考光;以及
一个或多个光学耦合元件,其被耦合以从所述参考光源接收所述参考光并且将所述参考光扩大到所述LCVR的一个或多个空间分离区域,
其中所述LCVR和所述出瞳扩大器在偏振干涉仪内,所述光学装置配置用于:
基于检测通过所述LCVR的所述扩大的参考光来确定所述LCVR的空间相关滞后;
使图像通过所述偏振干涉仪以形成干涉图;以及
使用所述LCVR的所述空间相关滞后来减少所述干涉图中的误差。
2.根据权利要求1所述的光学装置,其包括在所述LCVR与所述出瞳扩大器之间的间隙。
3.根据权利要求1所述的光学装置,其中所述出瞳扩大器与所述LCVR一体形成。
4.根据权利要求1所述的装置,其中所述输入特征和所述光学耦合元件中的至少一个包括衍射光学元件。
5.一种设备,其包括:
光源,其提供参考光;
光学装置,其包括:
液晶可变滞后器LCVR;
出瞳扩大器,其光学耦合到所述LCVR,所述出瞳扩大器包括:
至少一个光输入特征,其从所述光源接收所述参考光;以及
一个或多个光学耦合元件,其被耦合以从所述光源接收所述参考光并且将所述参考光扩大到所述LCVR的一个或多个空间分离区域;
焦平面阵列,其被布置为检测通过所述LCVR的所述扩大的参考光并且响应于此而产生电信号;以及
耦合到所述焦平面阵列的控制器,所述控制器被配置为基于所述电信号来确定所述LCVR的空间相关滞后,
其中所述LCVR和所述出瞳扩大器在偏振干涉仪内,所述控制器进一步配置用于:
使图像通过所述偏振干涉仪以形成干涉图;以及
使用所述LCVR的所述空间相关滞后来减少所述干涉图中的误差。
6.根据权利要求5所述的设备,其进一步包括在所述光学装置的相应第一和第二侧上的第一和第二偏振器,所述控制器被配置为在所述LCVR两端施加可变电压以形成影响通过所述LCVR的图像的时变延迟,所述图像通过所述偏振器和所述LCVR,从而形成经由所述焦平面阵列检测到的干涉图。
7.根据权利要求5所述的设备,其中所述参考光包括单色的、基本上准直的光。
8.一种方法,其包括:
将参考光耦合到出瞳扩大器的光学输入中;

基于对通过所述LCVR的所述扩大的参考光进行检测,确定所述LCVR的空间相关滞后,
其中所述LCVR和所述出瞳扩大器在偏振干涉仪内,所述方法进一步包括:
使图像通过所述偏振干涉仪以形成干涉图;以及
使用所述LCVR的所述空间相关滞后来减少所述干涉图中的误差。
9.根据权利要求8所述的方法,进一步包括:
经由电容传感器确定所述LCVR的平均滞后;以及
将所述空间相关滞后与所述平均滞后相结合以获得所述LCVR的绝对的空间相关滞后。
