Description

向3G无线手机提供基于覆盖的增强电视服务的方法和设备
技术领域
本发明一般涉及无线电信领域,具体地说,涉及提供到无线装置的电视服务。
背景技术
宽带服务提供商在竞争提供话音、数据和视频的“三重播放”服务时,无线服务提供商也在竞争向移动电话提供电视节目以便完成电话、因特网和电视服务的“移动三重播放”。今天的移动电话集成了大量的其它特性,如web浏览器、PDA、MP3播放器、AM/FM收音机、GPS、相机、游戏控制台等。然而,向移动电话提供电视服务只是在开始阶段。
多个无线服务提供商目前在使用现有3G单播信道提供移动电视服务。弗莱森公司(Verizon)提供VCAST服务。在CDMA2000分组数据或EvDO网络中,对于使用3G单播信道提供的短剪辑,它是下载后播放服务。Sprint在CDMA2000分组数据网络中使用3G单播信道提供13信道MobiTV服务。诸如辛格勒公司(Cingular)、KDDI公司、SK电信和T-Mobile等其它公司也在现有3G分组数据或电路数据网络中使用3G单播信道提供移动电视服务。
单播最适用于向不同接收器提供各个剪辑。然而,它不可扩展。广播/多播是在使网络资源使用降到最低的同时向多个接收器传送相同内容的有效途径。使用广播多播服务,直播电视节目可有效地输送到移动用户。
两种类别的网络和标准正在开发之中以便提供广播多播服务,即,3G网络和基于OFDM的网络。
对于3G网络,广播多播架构在用于CDMA网络的3GPP2和用于UTMS网络的3GPP两者中正进行标准化过程。在3GPP2中,它称为使用EvDO-Rev0的广播多播服务(BCMCS)、使用EvDO-RevA的增强BCMCS(eBCMCS),并且在3GPP中,它称为多媒体广播多播服务(MBMS)。两种架构均从网络向移动手机提供单向广播多播服务。
要提供3G广播多播服务,3G网络和移动手机两者均需要升级。由于3G空中接口吞吐量受到限制,因此,可使用3G广播多播信道提供的电视信道数量受到限制。例如,使用EvDO-Rev0的BCMCS可提供每扇区每载波300-400Kbps广播多播吞吐量。每个电视信道需要最低60Kbps带宽。这意味着通过3G广播多播只可提供5-6个电视信道。
有多个用于移动电视服务的基于OFDM的数字广播标准正在开发之中。
·手持数字视频广播(DVB-H)在欧洲正在开发。它是用于手持装置的地面数字视频广播(DVB-T)的修改。
·地面综合业务数字广播(ISDB-T)是在日本正开发的数字广播标准,它适用于移动接收。
·数字多媒体广播(DMB)是欧洲电信标准委员会(ETSI)最近(2005年7月)批准的标准。试验正在欧洲和韩国进行。
·仅前向链路(FLO)是高通建立的专有广播网络。
与3G广播多播相比,数字广播网络提供了更高的容量。例如,每个DVB-H网络可支持13.3Mbps吞吐量,这可转换成每个有300Kbps带宽的40个电视信道。然而,要使用上述数字广播标准提供移动电视服务,需要建立新广播网络,并且也需要移动手机支持。这要求相当大的资本投资。
3G广播多播服务提供可扩展的单向传输,表现在不存在可由接收器向发送器提供任何种类反馈的适当机制。类似地,模拟和数字广播网络也只提供单向传输。除切换信道外,用户对他们观看的内容没有任何其它控制。相应地,需要从移动装置提供交互更强的电视观看体验,同时将网络内的资本投资降到最低。
发明内容
根据涉及增强移动电话上现有电视服务的新方案的本发明原理,在现有技术之上做出了改进。除用于通过多播或广播信道承载的电视节目的视频流外,为每个用户建立单播信道以提供交互式且比用于电视节目的视频流带宽密集度更低的内容。此类交互式内容可包括电视指南、用于演员表成员的传记和诸如“美国偶像”等受欢迎电视节目的投票。

3G广播多播服务提供可扩展的单向传输,表现在不存在可由接收器向发送器提供任何种类反馈的适当机制。类似地,模拟和数字广播网络也只提供单向传输。除切换信道外,用户对他们观看的内容没有任何其它控制。
要提供增强的移动电视观看体验,我们根据本发明公开了使用3G单播信道发送与用户当前观看的电视节目有关的交互式内容。参照图1,它示出了在具有高通的Media FLO和CDMA EvDO网络的组合架构上下文中,用于通过EvDO单播信道110提供增强电视服务的本发明示范实现100。正如将理解的一样,包括直播流140或来自服务器S1的存储剪辑150的电视节目提供到媒体服务器160,并随后使用FLO广播信道120或EvDO广播多播信道130提供到移动用户170。交互式和增强内容可存储在存储了电视节目的服务器S1或在单独的服务器S2上。图1也示出提供交互式和增强内容的EvDO单播信道110是在媒体服务器160与移动手机用户170之间提供的双向信道。

图3示出示例GUI 300,其中,菜单310占据了移动装置330屏幕320的小部分。根据本发明,菜单项可在例如需要增强内容获取的情况下,通过使用键盘输入或触摸屏功能,根据需要显示。观看者不需要菜单项信息时,可通过例如超时特性或者按压某个按键或几个按键或者激活屏幕上的某个区域,从屏幕隐藏菜单。
根据本发明,与可显示的电视节目有关的增强内容的一个示范类型可包括具有诸如以下信息的交互式电视指南350:
(1)其它电视信道上在播放什么内容?
(2)此特定节目在将来何时重放?
(3)以前什么时候播放了此节目?
(4)是否有内容与此节目有关的其它节目?它们将在将来的什么时候播放?
(5)观看者喜欢当前节目时有哪些其它推荐节目?
与电视节目有关的另一类型增强内容可包括诸如以下的背景信息360:
(1)演员表成员是谁?
(2)哪个演员在节目中扮演哪个角色?
(3)有关演员表成员、运动员、新闻广播员或名人的传记信息是什么?
(4)电视节目或电影的制作时间?
仍有的另一类型的增强内容可能是GUI 370,发送诸如“美国偶像”等其中观看者的投票确定比赛获胜者的受欢迎电视节目的观看者投票。
增强内容的目标是让观看者方便地访问可从显示电视节目的移动电话访问的电视节目有关的信息。由于当前可用广播多播网络中的单向传输限制,此特性使用这些网络是不可行的。然而,它可使用3G单播信道(或GPRS/UMTS单播信道)提供。由于多个原因,单播对于输送增强内容是理想的解决方案。增强内容由观看者按个体访问,这意味着内容通常在不同时间由不同观看者访问。因此,多播或广播机制无法使用。增强内容也比用于电视节目的视频内容带宽密集度更低。因此,无线网络系统容量将不会受到用于增强内容分发的单播业务的严重影响。

移动手机上的视频播放器程序需要包括GUI和协议以请求和接收来自网络的增强内容。对于覆盖GUI在移动装置的实现,用于此类实现的节目计划技术将为本领域技术人员所理解,并且无需在此申请中进一步论述。

Claims (10)
