Description

电泳显示面板
本发明涉及一种用于显示图像的电泳显示面板。
在开始段中提及的该类电泳显示面板的一个实施例在非正式出版前的欧洲专利申请02078456.7(PHNL020754)中描述。
在被描述的电泳显示面板中,图像显示过程中,众多像素中的每个像素的表现被电极间的带电粒子的位置决定。粒子的位置依赖于当粒子穿过液体移动时形成的电势差。粒子穿过液体的移动也依赖于液体速度。由于液体速度由介质温度决定,因此粒子的位置不仅依赖于电势差,而且依赖于介质温度。该显示面板包含加热装置,由此具有预定的高于外界温度的基本恒定的介质温度。结果,在预定介质温度该显示面板具有基本可重复表现的像素。加热装置把介质加热到预定介质温度,这比较高地消耗功率,例如,如果预定介质温度基本高于外界温度时。被选择的预定介质温度比较高,这样能在比较短的时间内改变像素的表现。
被描述的显示面板的一个缺点是它要求比较高的能量以使得与此相关的像素具有独立于外界温度的基本可重复的表现。
本发明的一个目的是提供一种在开始段中提及的显示面板,该显示面板具有基本可重复表现的像素,它要求比较少的能量且独立于外界温度。
本发明基于下列观点,如果像素的表现对介质温度的依赖被电势差补偿的话,则像素的表现可基本重复。此依赖被电势差补偿而不需要加热装置调节介质温度。由于能用比较低的功率消耗电路完成补偿,因此像素的表现基本可重复只要求比较少的能量且独立于外界温度。由于驱动装置能接收来自温度探针的表示介质温度的测量温度并控制依赖测量温度的电势差,因此该显示面板具有基本可重复表现的像素,其只要求比较少的能量且独立于外界温度。这与非正式出版前的欧洲专利申请02078456.7(PHNL020754)中描述的显示面板相反,它由于具有比较高的功率消耗的加热装置,因此要求比较高的能量以使像素具有基本可重复表现,如果预定介质温度被维持在基本高于外界温度的程度时。此外,现有技术的显示面板在外界温度高于预定介质温度时不具有基本可重复表现的像素,因为加热装置不能将介质冷却到预定介质温度。
在一个实施例中驱动装置能依靠测量温度控制持续时间。如果介质能在两种表现间比较快地切换则该持续时间比较短,如果介质只能在两种表现间比较慢地切换则该持续时间比较长。例如,由于与20℃相比,介质在60℃能更快地在两种表现间切换,因此在较高温度的持续时间要短于在较低温度的持续时间。
在最近修改的实施例中驱动装置能控制每个持续时间,该持续时间包括多个相等时间周期的时间间隔,该数目由要显示的图像、测量温度和恒定的时间周期决定。那么如果测量温度改变了,就只有时间间隔数具有不同的值。
在另一个最近修改的实施例中驱动装置能控制每个持续时间,该持续时间包括多个相等时间周期的时间间隔的持续时间,该数目由要显示的图像决定,时间周期由测量温度决定。那么如果测量温度改变了,就只有时间周期具有不同的值。
在另一个实施例中驱动装置能控制依赖测量温度的程度。如果介质能比较快地在两种表现间切换则该依赖程度比较低,如果介质只能比较慢地在两种表现间切换则该依赖程度比较高。例如,由于与具有20℃的介质相比,具有60℃的介质能在两种表现间较快地切换,因此较高温度对测量温度的依赖程度小于较低温度对测量温度的依赖程度。
与具有一个包含第一和第二电极的基板的显示面板相比,如果第一基板包含第一电极,第二基板包含第二电极,则像素的表现比较容易改变。
本发明的显示面板的这些和其它方面将参照附图进一步说明和描述。

图1和图2示出第一实施例的显示面板1具有第二基板9和多个像素2。像素2在两维结构中沿着基本直线排列。像素2也可能是其它排列,例如,蜂窝式排列。显示面板1具有第一基板8和相对的第二基板9。电泳介质5存在于基板8、9之间。电泳介质5包含例如白色液体中的带负电荷的黑色粒子6。电泳介质本身可从例如US 5,961,804、US 6,120,839和US 6,130,774得知并且能从例如E Ink公司得到。第一和第二电极3,4与每个像素2相连接。电极3,4能接收电势差。第一和第二电极3,4与每一个像素2相关联。电极3,4能够接收电势差。图2中第一基板8具有用于每一像素2的第一电极3,第二基板9具有用于每一像素2的第二电极4。当带电粒子6位于接近第一电极3处,由于15V的电势差,像素2为第一表现,即白色。当带电粒子6位于接近第二电极4处,由于电势差极性相反,为-15V,像素2为第二表现,即黑色。温度探针11,例如位于第一基板8面对介质的表面,能测量表示介质温度的温度。此外,驱动装置100能控制用于显示图像的电势差,接收来自温度探针11的测量温度,并控制依赖于测量温度的电势差。
图3示出第一实施例中的测量温度和电势差的持续时间的关系。电势差的电平是15V。电极3,4之间的距离约80微米。电泳介质5的层厚约50微米。此外,一层厚约30微米的聚合物粘合材料位于电极3,4之间。线“a”是关于像素的表现从黑改变到白,由B-W转换表示,线“b”是关于像素的表现从深灰改变到浅灰,由DG-LG转换表示。随着测量温度的升高,持续时间减少。依据图3在第一个实施例中驱动装置100能依靠测量温度控制电势差的持续时间。因此,像素表现对介质温度的依赖能被电势差补偿,显示面板1具有基本可重复表现的像素2,其要求比较少的能量且独立于外界温度。可利用一个查找表在驱动装置100中引入测量温度和持续时间之间的关系。此外,图3示出转换B-W的持续时间与转换DG-LG的持续时间基本成正比例。因此,在第一实施例的变化中驱动装置100能控制每一持续时间包括一定数目的相等时间周期的时间间隔,该数目由要显示的图像和测量温度决定,并且时间周期是固定不变的。在第一实施例的另一个变化中驱动装置100能控制每一持续时间包括一定数目的相等时间周期的时间间隔,该数目由要显示的图像决定且时间周期由测量温度决定。
图4示出第二实施例的测量温度和电势差的电平之间的关系。电势差的持续时间是200ms。电极3、4的间距约80微米。电泳介质5的层厚约50微米。此外,一层厚约30微米的聚合物粘合材料位于电极3、4之间。测量温度和电势差的电平之间的关系是关于转换B-W。随着测量温度的升高,电势差的电平降低。依据图4在第二实施例中驱动装置100能依靠测量温度控制电势差的电平。可利用一个查找表在驱动装置100中引入测量温度和电势差的电平之间的关系。

Claims (6)

1.一种用于显示图像的电泳显示面板,包括:
第一和第二两个相对的基板;
基板之间的电泳介质,该电泳介质包含液体中的带电粒子;
多个像素;
与每一像素相关联的第一和第二电极,用于接收具有持续时间和电平的电势差;
能控制用于显示图像的电势差的驱动装置;和
能测量表示介质温度的温度的温度探针,其中
驱动装置还能接收来自温度探针的测量温度并依靠测量温度控制电势差。
2.权利要求1要求的显示面板,其特征在于驱动装置能依靠测量温度控制持续时间。
3.权利要求2要求的显示面板,其特征在于驱动装置能控制每一持续时间,使其包括一定数目的相等时间周期的时间间隔,该数目由要显示的图像和测量温度决定,并且该时间周期是固定不变的。
