Two-stroke internal combustion engine. The present invention relates to an internal combustion engine operating according to a two-stroke cycle.
The engine according to the invention comprises at least one piston cylinder, with fuel injection, provided at its end situated on the cylinder head side (outer end) with a mechanically controlled exhaust valve, and at its opposite end. or interior, with a view to an air intake, of two orifices displaced axially with respect to one another, which are in permanent communication with a chamber containing an air intake valve, the dis position of these orifices and the control of the valves being such that the air charge, introduced at the stroke outwardly of the teat by the inlet valve in the inner part of the cylinder located on the side of the motor shaft , either, during the back race,
compressed in this part of the cylinder and passes through said orifices from one side of the piston to the other towards the end of the compression, the exhaust valve having previously been opened, so that the charge of compressed air thus introduced in the outer part of the cylinder serves to sweep the exhaust gases through this exhaust valve, this charge of air being burned by fuel injection at the start of the next stroke of the piston outward.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention in the form of a single-cylinder engine: FIG. 1 is an end elevational view thereof; Fig. 2 is an axial longitudinal section thereof; o Fig. 3 is a front elevational view of a crank plate; Fig. 4 is a detail section, on a larger scale, of one form of fuel injection pump; Fig. fi shows the detail of a gland for the piston rod.
The cylinder a of the engine shown is provided, at its end ai located on the cylinder head side, or outer end, with an exhaust valve b and a spark plug c, while the end a2 of the cylinder , located on the side of the crank shaft, or inner end of the cylinder, is for view of an air intake port a3 and a communication port a4, these ports being axially displaced with respect to each other to the other and in permanent communication with an air chamber a5_ provided with an air intake valve d.
The piston e housed in the cylinder a is of such thickness that it covers the rib separating the orifices a3 <B> ci </B> 4, so that in the position shown in FIG. 2, there is a free passage from below the piston e, through the inlet port a3, into the chamber a 'of the inlet valve, and from the latter through the outlet port. communication a4 in the cylinder chamber above the piston.
The fuel injection port f is provided in the side wall of the cylinder a above the communication port a ', the fuel being introduced through this port by a pump y, from a liquid fuel tank h, after the piston has covered the communication port a4 in its upstroke. This pump g is contained in the liquid fuel tank h, mounted in the immediate vicinity of the side wall of the cylinder. Its details will be described later.
The piston e is provided with sealing rings el and is formed in one piece with a rod e2, connected at its lower end to a counter-piston i, driven by a reciprocating movement in a guide cylinder j arranged along the same axis as the cylinder-engine <I> a. </I> A cover <I> j '</I> is assembled between the cylinders <I> a </I> and <I> j , </I> and carries a central gland j 2 to prevent leakage around the piston rod.
This cable gland is shown in fig. 5 and comprises two halves held pressed against each other by springs j3 and comprising j4 ribs fitting together on their abutment faces. The counter-piston -i is provided with a journal i 'on which the connecting rod 7c is articulated, the head Ic' of which is connected to the crank button L.
In the construction shown, the crankshaft, formed of several parts, consists of discs or plates fixed on axes or journals ml, rotating in appropriate bearings 1a in the sides of the crank case o, the crank knob 1 connecting the two discs or crank plates to each other <I> m. </I>
These nz crank plates are seen, on their outer face (fig. 3), of M2 guide rails, which receive the ends <I> p ', </I> provided with rollers, pushers <I > p </I> moving in guides p = and serving to actuate the valves <I> b d. </I> These tappets are preferably of adjustable length and are connected to the valve stems b1 <I> dl , </I> by means of elastic couplings p3, so as to close the mechanical valves rnent.
In addition, coil springs d = b2 of the usual type contribute to closing these valves. The guide grooves 1112 therefore actuate the pushers p by constraint in both directions.
The tappet of the intake valve d comprises an extension p4, actuating a push rod y ', the upper end of which engages with an oscillating arm g' = (fig. 4) intended to lower the piston y3 of the fuel injection pump g in a cylindrical chamber of tank h .. These members could also be connected po sitively to each other, for example by ball joints or by articulation joints, so that the pump piston could be lifted by the return of the inlet valve lifter, or a spring could be used to lift this piston.
The m2 guide groove, provided on the crank plate in on the side of the inlet valve d; is determined so as to open this valve as soon as the piston e, going up, covers the communication orifice a4; since the fuel pump is operated by this same guide groove, fuel injection will occur at approximately the same time. The inlet valve d closes when the piston reaches the upper end of its stroke, thereby allowing the fuel pump piston to rise and draw in a new charge for the next injection.
The amount of this charge can be regulated by a needle valve g4 controlling the orifice gl through which the liquid enters the pump from the reservoir h, in which it is hand held at a constant level by a float hl, bearing a valve h2, used to regulate the supply from a pipe h.3. The liquid delivered by the pump passes through a check valve f 1 in a chamber leading to the injection port f,
which is preferably established as a nozzle forming a spray nozzle for dividing the injected fuel.
The guide groove ni 'on the opposite crank plate is determined so as to open the exhaust valve b before the piston e discovers the injection port f, so that the exhaust has already started when communication port a4 is uncovered. The compressed air below the piston e then passes through the communication port a4 and completes the scavenging of the exhaust gases by replacing them with an air charge.
The exhaust valve b closes when the piston e arrives just at the upper edge of the communication port a4, approximately at the same time as the intake valve d opens, and the switching phase pressure begins in the upper part of the cylinder located on the cylinder head side. Fuel injection through the port f takes place at the start of the upstroke and the fully compressed load is ignited by means of the spark plug c.
Any other means of ignition can be used, and it is possible, if desired, to operate the engine according to the Diesel or semi-Diesel cycle, the fuel injection being, in this case, delayed until the end of the compression stroke.
The crank housing o is shown provided with a cup r, containing a lubricating oil pump r ', which is actuated by an eccentric r mounted on one of the journals of the crank shaft, and which is provided with valves suction and discharge. A pipe brings the oil to the bearing n, of said journal mi of the crankshaft, where it enters a radial oil pipe s1 communicating with a longitudinal channel s2, connected to a pipe s3 going to the crank button 1.
A similar channel s3 hollowed out on the opposite side of the crank knob 1 brings the oil to the other bearing ii, and beyond to a duct 84 going to an inlet regulator device 1 mounted on the wall of the guide cylinder < I> j. </I> This regulating device t has an adjustable screw or needle valve P, which determines the flow of oil through the port t2 in the guide cylinder.
The head ai of the counter-piston i moving in the guide cylinder, is provided with a central recess aë in which the oil brought into this small cylinder accumulates, the excess oil escaping through through the holes u on the connecting rod journal il k and returning through the crank case into the oil pan <I> r. </I> The boss <I> j 3 </I> below the stuffing box j2 is arranged so as to engage in the recess or cavity u1 at the end of the upward stroke of piston e, thus pushing back the oil,
through the duct es formed in the piston rod, in e ° radial channels, formed in the piston head e and which distribute the oil to the outer periphery thereof, between the sealing rings el.
A hole o 'is made in the side of the crankcase for the introduction of lubricating oil, and an oil indicator can be mounted at any suitable location on the crankcase.
The crankshaft journals ni, 'are provided with ana oil projectors to remove excess lubricant, which returns to the bowl r through suitable conduits.
An ignition magneto v (fig. 1) is shown mounted on a console v1 on the crank case, this magneto being actuated by a chain or other transmission enclosed in box 0; a screw t "; keeps the magneto in position.
It is understood that the invention is not limited to the embodiment 'described and shown. Thus the engine pcui-r-has to include two or more engine cylinders.
